Not Scared Anymore. In A Bad Way. Help

Started keto last August and had huge success. Went from almost 260 down to 213. Last two months or so have not been good. At first on keto I was scared to death of carbs, rice, pasta, chips, pizza crust and other crap. Over the last two months I have not been scared. Sushi, pizza here or there. Bread from outback. Back up to 220. What is the key to getting back on track? Fast or just be super strict again. Thanks:

I would suggest you start with cutting out the starch carbs, give your body some time to go into ketosis, then start IFs, after a week or so do a long fast, 24 or 48, whatever works for you.
Good luck on your Journey.1 -

Well, on the basis of what you just wrote, I'll bet the Compliant You already knows exactly how to advise the Backsliding You.

Eat too much of anything and you'll gain. Reel it in. Cut the carbs and cut the calories or you'll be back to to 245-250 by Christmas. You can fast 20 hours a day 7 days a week and do all your eating in 4 hour window but if you eat over calories in that 4 hour window...you'll still be back to 245-250 buy Christmas. Not a pleasant thought is it? That guy you work with will be saying, "I told you so".
Remember why you started.6 -
^^ I agree ^^
*Stern post coming up*..
And what's all this 'scared' business?
I haven't added one - single - starchy floury carb to my WoE since March - but I ain't scared of those boys.
I just know they're not good for me, and if I eat them, they're going to... well, they'll do to me what they've done to you. Adversely affect my progress.
Your problem is not that you're not scared any more.
You're problem is that it's an addiction.
In much the same way that it's an addiction for many other people.
The key to getting back on track?
Stop eating the carbs! It really IS that simple.
I wouldn't be scared of carbs, in your shoes.
I'd be scared of how weak your willpower is.
*Stern post ends*.
Good luck.
C'mon... you KNOW you can do it.
You've done it already, right...?11 -
I am not scared of carbs. I just realize they are not healthy for me, and so I am keeping keep my carb intake below 20 net a day. It is just a choice I made, and I see the results on the glucometer, the scales and the results from the blood draw at the doctor's office.
You also have a choice to make.2 -
Were you letting small bits of sugar or carbs back in, prior to eating pizza, sushi and bread? Because even the smallest amounts seem to trigger cravings in me as well so I need to always keep a close eye on what I'm eating. You are worth the effort, time and trouble to keep at this, don't let a set back derail all you've accomplished.1

Not really. Not sugar. My willpower was fine 100%. Just walking into the room where to pizzas were at school for teacher appreciation week. One slice turned to two. A sushi craving here or there. And the crazy thing is the weight didn't come back. And a little more and it didn't come back. Then it finally started to come back. More like a knock in the head. I know what to do. I am not getting back to to 260 or even 221.
Thanks.5 -

So... If it wasn't about willpower, it was that you thought you could cheat, on yourself, and not get caught?
Busted!5 -
In the beginning maybe. It is like the weight just wouldn't come back. I had pho like 3 or 4 times in march. The hot soup steam helped. Then the occasional bread and sushi. Then the weight still wouldn't come. The last couple weeks though... BAM2

I had lost 145 pounds..then maintenance. This is where I've faced my biggest challenges, regained 35 pounds and am struggling to relose 20 pounds of the regain. (35 more is too low for my body to sustain)
So getting back to weight loss keto has been so difficult, and I still stop and start. I do believe there is a addiction element, and an emotional element as well. After 6 months of trying on a daily basis to get back to losing again, I finally feel like I'm getting my keto legs back. Fully embracing the original, no mistakes tolerated, full on Draconian, no holds barred keto.
Waffling in the middle ground doesnt work for me. Once i get back to my new, more realistic goal weight...I'll start the maintenance plan again....eyes wide open.
The moral of this story is..just keep at it til it works..never give up. After a fall, get back on the horse ASAP. There haven't been any easy solutions for me. Just keep at it, as relentlessly as your cravings keep after you.
Call it a craving for the good life.2 -
You have carb creep...and calorie creep. Which is basically a sugar creep too. Carbs are glucose. There is some other stuff in there too (fibre and nutrition) but it comes down to glucose. Especially for foods like sushi and bread. For me.
I need to go strict to get back on track when I let it go too long. My carbs crept up over the winter and with it, calories went up. I reagained like you did. That is a large part of why I am doing meativore May. I won't have carb creep if I am eating nohing from plants.
Others find hey can keep in those problem foods and stull eat appropriate calories. You could work towards that but at the moment you seem to have a harder time with that. Like I do. Sometimes abstinence is easier.2 -
I'm sorry your struggling I think most of us know exactly what your going through.
One thing I would do is take the emotion out of food, there is nothing to fear don't give it that power. It's just food it fuels your body, that's all. You know what will fuel you properly and make you feel your best, just keep doing that. But if you choose to indulge in something less valuable nutritionally, no big deal, just start back with your next meal.
You will need to adjust your mindset on food, it's not feasible to think you are never going to eat anything off plan ever again for the rest of your life. Say you eat a biscuit, it's just a biscuit no biggie, your body will use it and be done with it. Having one or two slip ups didn't mean all is lost.5 -
Well I weighed 217 this morning. Water fluctuations and all that. I do pretty good for the most part. I also count my achievements. I have not had a soft drink since August. Other things to a minimum. Like French fries maybe once, not a single baked potato, etc. I have slipped up some also. But compared to what I used to do... never going back like that again.3

Where are you drawing the line?0 -
Everybody has to find the program that works for them or you wont stick with it. It'll just be a means to an end. I know that from experience.
Am i strictly keto or even Low Carb all day every day? Nope. Doesn't work for me. I make food choices daily even moment to moment sometiems and I have chosen to eat pizza, a slice of cake, tortillas....but it was a conscious choice. It wasn't mindless eating. For me, thats the key. Im in charge of the choices i make and i make them mindefully.
So i cant tell you what the key is. You have to figure that out. Its different for everyone. Some have to be super strict all the time, some dont. But I will tell you once I quit looking at this as a means to an end (a specific weight) I've been much more successful and have lost weight consistently (sometimes fast sometimes slow) and have improved on all my other health goals. It might be worth reframing the question to : what is the track i want to be on and why do i want to be on it?6 -
If I'm really craving something I try and find low carb alternatives. If I want pizza I'll buy a low carb Atkins frozen one. If I want chips I'll munch on some pork rinds. You can do this just remember why you started and all the progress you've made already! Take some pictures of your body to see what you have accomplished already and don't beat yourself up! No one perfect0

Thanks for the replies. I have made better choices already. Our end of year luncheon was yesterday. Bbq, baked beans. cole slaw, potato salad, kings Hawaiian rolls, and cupcakes. I ate bbq and a spoonful of baked beans and that was it. Father in law made crab legs last night and ate that, no corn on cob. Going to ride my bike this summer and work in the yard a lot. Winter has made me somewhat lazy except for my 12,000 steps a day I get at work. Thanks again.6

Take some time to think about what will be sustainable for you life-long. Assuming you want to keep the weight off life-long. Plan for reality, where we all have times of eating off-plan. Teacher appreciation week is going to happen-- as are holidays and celebrations. You have to figure out how you're going to navigate those things-- abstain? For the weight-loss period or forever? Indulge for that day? Insist on a healthy-for-you option? Everyone goes about it from a different perspective.
You could manage some carb meals, but not too many. Do you know how many? Once a month? Once a week? Be curious and figure it out, then use that knowledge to keep this WOE sustainable for you life-long.1 -
Eat the toppings off your Teacher Appreciation pizza, chuck the crust... little children in Somalia will not be saved by you eating all the carb crap offered (in my day it was starving children in Ethiopia .) You can do this! You can make those occasions fit your plan just like you did with the BBQ and the crab feast! Hang in there. Maintenance is waaaay harder than losing the weight, we tend to think that we are invincible now and can add random carbs anytime we feel like it without consequence (I speak from experience, lol.)3

Anyone under the age of 125 is 'of tender years'.
It's true, I made it up myself.2 -

Hrrmm? Maybe you need to be marinated in vino for a couple days!0 -
@RalfLott... both @AlexandraCarlyle and I have been marinated in vino rosso for many years, lol. Every once in a while I add 'pickling' in Single Malt Scotch, Tequila Reposado, Grey Goose Vodka, and a splash of Ron Centenario Anejo Especial. But not all at the same time.1

ETA: I posted a comment in 'LCD chat' and get the message that my comment was awaiting approval'...?
Sent a message to @baconslave asking whether there was a problem, but I didn't get the 'approval' warning here.... maybe there's a glitch....? *confused*...0 -
