Stiffness

So what’s going on with me & my body?
I’m getting pain constantly & to make matters worse I’m aware of how stiff my overall body feels.
Getting down on the floor & up again is very painful.
I know I still have at least 2/3 stone to lose & im committed to losing that.
Any suggestions on how else to deal with this would be greatly appreciated

2/3 stone shouldn't cause body stiffness.
For stiffness, I'm a huge fan of yoga which offers a variety of benefits from lower blood pressure to reduced stress to improved flexility and improvements in balance. That being said, yoga in and of itself isn't enough activity. That's why I hit the gym and since I have a history of injuring myself, I hired a personal trainer.
That being said, constant pain sounds like something you might want to take to your personal physician.3 -
Is this new? For me, stiffness was one of the most noticeable symptoms of what was eventually diagnosed as hypothyroidism, and it can have other medical causes.
Beyond any medical or nutritional issues, better diagnosed by your doc or dietician rather than some random idiot like me on the internet ( ), I'd second UncleMac's suggestion of yoga, which helped me, even before my thyroid condition got sorted.
Massage, sauna/steam room, that sort of thing, might alleviate discomfort temporarily.1 -
Thanks for your advise
My gp says diet & exercise
So I’m going to start Pilates & do a detox
I let u know how I get on
Have a super day4 -
I also think a mix of yoga and pilates is the way to go. As Joseph Pilates states: “If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. IF it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.”4

So 2/3 stone is about 91 pounds? I know that I only lost about 33 pounds, and before I did my knees and everything was just starting to ache all the time. Steps were miserable. Age is not kind to those of us carrying extra baggage unfortunately. Good luck and I think pilates and detox sounds like a good plan!3

One stone is 14lbs so 2/3 of a stone is just less than 10lbs.0

I’m a 61 year old Canadian, and still work in imperial measurements (Canada went metric without my participation) I still lift pounds, run miles, think in degrees farenheit, and have my vehicles and electronics programmed that way. It drives the wife crazy. Bonus!9

Me too Farback

I'm having some back trouble. The intense cold doesn't help. My dr says to keep moving. Don't sit for too long.0

I suffer from back, knee and some hip pain. I am pretty sure I need at least one knee replaced. Have doctor appointment next month. We shall see.0

Pain and stiffness are two different things. For pain, I'd discuss with your doctor. For stiffness, move as much as you can, and as often as you can. The amount of time spent in motion matters more than what you are doing, so do what you like. As a bit of unsolicited advice, I take fish oil to keep my cholesterol in check, and my doc also says it keeps your eyes healthy, which I don't notice, and it lubricates your joints--and I notice a huge difference in joint stiffness when I miss a few days' doses.3

Thank you for the great advice1 -
Also make sure you are getting enough Vitamin D - it really helps me with arthritic symptoms of stiffness. I take 6000-7000 per day.1

I was at a family gathering last summer. Sat down to share a drink with one of my cousins. I'm 63 - he's 88.
I asked him, "What advice do you have for a kid like me?". He said, "If you wanna' keep moving, you gotta' keep moving".
Words I remember when I'm rolling my carcass out of bed to go to the gym. Good advice.

Thought I had posted here, but I guess I didn't...
Remember to get enough protein in your diet. RDA only provides MINIMUMS for young adults (20s-30s). There are a number of studies now coming out (mostly out of Australia) that the older you are the more protein you need...up to double what the RDA is. It's not just about building or maintaining muscle either. Protein is needed for a lot of bodily functions to include the fluid in your joints, and if you don't get enough in your diet, your body may be leaching it from other places such as your joints...causing aches and stiffness. Doctors are quick to label people with Fibromyalgia and prescribe pain killers, but in some cases it could just be a protein deficiency. Try bumping up your protein, and see if you feel better in a few days...if you do, you might need a bit more protein than you have been getting.
Also, I'm using a lot of turmeric after my workouts now. It really helps with the aches and pains. I forgot to take it yesterday after my paddle, and could barely move today. I popped some this morning and it has already helped. It really helps with recovery. I just heard about it from some of our pro racers, and it makes a difference in recovery after a strenuous workout for me.
Also if it is joints, Glucosamine may also help with the joint aches and pains, though I've found the protein bump up made such a difference that it has had me just about stop using glucosamine any more.2 -

I have been considering trying some turmeric. You've pushed me over the edge. Stopping at the grocery tonight.
Do you take it by itself? Or do you add it to food or drink?

Tumeric can come in capsules. It was suggested to me for something else. I have not been consistent with it to know if it helps.
My hubby likes to cook with it: fried eggs; Would be good in rice too.2 -
Falling on the ice in the driveway doesn't help with stiffness. Just had that experience. It was easier to recover when I was younger...2

Turmeric / Curcumin does help - The absorption is poor , you need the take it with black pepper and fat. I eat my morning eggs then the curcumin. - Eastcoast Jim1
