Hello, I have been a low carber - not keto, several times, now I'm trying again so please be patient whilst I waffle. In my twenties I read Prof. John Yudkins, This Slimming Business and Pure White & Deadly. I ate low carb for about two years, then went back to carbs. I then read Dr Atkins book, I think his first, then low carbed again for about two years. Since then I have yo-yo'd between the two.

I'm very old now, with arthritis and high blood pressure and know low carbing will improve both. So I hope you will bear with me.

Welcome! I'm getting up there a bit myself in years! I eat very low carb and what I eat takes me back to when I was a kid in the 50s and 60s. Just real food. We'd walk up the road to the neighbor's farm, go to their spring house, leave a quarter and grab a gallon jug of milk out of the water. It was at least 1/3 cream. To this day, I shake milk containers. We bought their butter too. I don't remember the cost but it wasn't much.

I wish I had my Mom's old copy of the Atkins book circa 1970 something just for old time sake. The diet I really remember her doing though was the Stillman Diet. Not a particularly healthy eating plan. :#

Thank you all for your welcome.

ladipoet, I'm going out to meet two friends for coffee, mine with cream, one friend black coffee, the other, tap water only... :) I will read the article when I get back, thank you.

kpk54, I remember fresh country milk too and farm butter. It was wartime when I was a child, our bacon ration was 2ozs each per week! So I love dry cured (no water added) bacon now. :)

Welcome, Mary! I look forward to hearing about your progress. My mom deals with similar issues to yours, plus T2 diabetes and more. I wish I get her to adopt a LCHF lifestyle.

I have read this article and find it very interesting, my arthritis is of the knees and hips and is the wear and tear type. My late husband suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis and tried many treatments. I wonder if borax could have helped him. Thank you again.

@MissyCHF ...no problem. You are welcome. A good friend of mine (my God-Mother actually who just turned 75 earlier this week) suffers with pain and arthritis. She spend most of Christmas Day with me, my mother and a handful of other close family friends. She and her boyfriend got a copy of the article too. She's a registered nurse mind you and started doing the protocol outlined there. Something I didn't know was that she'd been living on pain pills for many years partly in connection with her arthritis. When we spoke this past Monday, she informed me that she has not taken a single pain pill in 3 days straight since starting the protocol so I guess it's working for her.

@ladipoet - holy mackerel! That is phenomenal!!! I know that taking Boron (I got tired of mixing my Borax myself) was the only thing that finally stopped the radiating bone pain I had in my legs...that was worse when I was excessively tired. I'm still not exactly sure I understand the mechanism fully, but I know with zinc and boron, my cell walls are stronger, etc. It was incredible when it worked!

I know, right @KnitOrMiss???!! I was, of course, tickled to death that my Godmother was open-minded enough to try it and even more delighted to know that it's already having a positive impact on both her and her boyfriend's life. I can't get past the taste myself so I'm going to be ordering some boron for myself the next time I place an order for supplements, but what I find even more amusing is that since hearing my Godmother sing praises of the protocol, my mother is trying it too. LOLZ Who does she think I brought the article home for anyway??!! (Mom has arthritis on 3 vertebrae in her lower back = lots of lower back pain especially when she stands on her feet for long periods of time.) I really have you to thank for all of this too Knit...I'm so glad you shared the link to that article with me my friend!!!! Bless you for that.

Interesting you would post that about Borax. As an organic farmer I add borax to my fields. I started on the advice of a friend who found her vegetables had fewer problems growing with the addition. It certainly makes for healthy plants and has prevented our tomatoes and squash from getting blossom end rot that we use to get every season and most other people experience around here regularly. I never researched borax as an organic fertilizer supplement and the organic farm inspectors never found fault with the additive. So, I continue to add it to my compost before spreading it.

Thanks for the info on it.

Hmmmm, after reading, I'm not sure boron is my problem as I have very healthy strong teeth, and the bones of a robust 20 y.o..... perhaps it's just all the sport and accident injuries I've sustained over the years?

@MissyCHF - Is there a reason you're taking a chewable that's loaded with aspartame?? That has calcium in in with D3 WITHOUT K2 to actually transport it into your bones and muscles properly?

Not to cause panic or anything, and I am not a medical person or professional in any capacity, but everything I've learned in the last 3 years (Focused on this subject, 10 years in general health), says that 90% of the time, we don't actually need more calcium. Most of us eating whole foods/varied diet get enough calcium, but we don't have enough D3 to absorb it, and we don't have enough K2 to get that calcium into the bones and muscles where it needs to go...

Calcium is the celebrity here, I guess. D3 is the assistant (helps absorb it). K2 is the manager...(helps direct it). Magnesium and potassium are the roadies (get it where it needs to go), and Boron and Zinc are the bouncers - they keep the good stuff in and the bad stuff out, and only let out what is necessary! To me, these things all go together, and if you don't get them all, there's no point in any of them.

Dr. Berg says that if you take calcium, you should take it 12 hours away from Vitamin D so as not to over-absorb it, and you must balance that with the K2, so that it can be transported to where it is needed. Otherwise, it just sits around, cluttering up and hardening your veins and arteries... Also, Vitamin A should be offset from D by 12 hours to prevent toxicity...unless you're taking it in a natural combination form like Cod Liver Oil, etc.

Please do some research on this and take it to your appointment to discuss with your doctor... All the K2 information is currently becoming accepted knowledge among the functional medicine groups, so it could take a decade or more before traditional medicine accepts the knowledge as accurate...

Chris Masterjohn, PhD has some great info on K2.

Dr. Eric Berg has some great videos about the combination...

I'm sure others have some good links, too... Feel free to hit any of us up for links or more specifics...

EDITED TO ADD: I was reading through the supplement again, and it says that 880 IU of D3 is "high level." To get my levels up from 38 ng/mL to 100 ng/mL, I had to take 20,000 IU of D3 with 100-200 mcg K2, M7 form for months at at a time, sometimes doubling that on really cloudy/overcast days... It is part of Dr. Berg's protocol... 40,000 IU D3, 400 mcg K2, M7 form...offset by A 12 hours late (I don't remember the amount)...

@canadjineh - I never had problems with my teeth, really, nor with my bones (only one broken, ever), so I don't know if that is a marker to judge by. For me, I started out with the Borax, as a trial, since I had it on hand. Once I wanted to increase my dosage to more therapeutic levels, I switch to capsules, and I've never looked back...

I read somewhere that Boron deficiency is as prevalent, and just becoming accepted as to how critical deficiency is in the nutrient, as MAGNESIUM... I think all of us here understand the true impact of magnesium... This shocked me enough to at least try the Boron...

I ended up getting the leg pains I had a few times before I took the Boron twice a day...and I don't think I've had a single leg pain since. I don't know if I was that deficient, if I absorb it that poorly, or if my need for it (being a thyroid patient, etc.) is just that high, but it has made such a change for me.

My theory is that it can't hurt to try it, and you can always stop. Boron is one of the most inexpensive supplements I take.

KnitOrMiss, the Accrete D3 tablets I'm prescribed isn't a chewable, it is a tablet I swallow whole twice per day. I was prescribed it because I have fallen twice and broken a bone each time. I have blood tests every year near my birthday, several years ago, following a blood test I was told I had CKD stage three but of late my doctor tells me it is much improved. I don't want to experiment with my health at my age so I'll consult my doctor before trying anything new.

@MissyCHF - Good to know! I just googled the words "accrete D3" and it showed chewable first. My apologies for the assumption.

Please do some research on the K2 to discuss with your doctor... I broke a bone that's supposed to be nigh on impossible to break in late 2005, but my most recent bone scan showed me in the healthier ranges for bone density. I'm only 41 years old, but I've suffered SEVERE vitamin D deficiency for over a decade with nary any improvement until I added the K2 (M7 form) with my D3 intake... I'm now finally in the optimal range.

I don't know if you do better with videos or reading information, but Dr. Berg has (to me) better videos and Chris Masterjohn PhD has (to me) better documentation to read...

I'm glad to hear that your CKD is much improved!! That's incredible.

And I agree definitely about not experimenting without discussing it with your doctor... Please remember that our doctor's can't possibly study every single condition, supplement, medication, etc. It is helpful to discuss things with them that they may have to research further before commenting or recommending something, but a good doctor will always listen to questions or concerns a patient has before explaining how it impacts that individual patient!

Best of luck on continuing to improve!

It's a lot more toxic to ants than humans. Though I wouldn't want to be chugging it like mad. For ants though, it slowly disrupts their digestion until it kills them. Which is why we put it in something yummy that they will want to take home and share.
