Id like to hear what everyone thinks about it , how you do it and what you think breaks your fast.

The last couple of weeks I've started to do IF. Before keto I couldn't even go an hour after waking up in the morning before getting the shakes and that hangry feeling that goes up in your throat. Being almost 7 weeks into keto I can go from 4:30 pm to 11:00 am and once I did 1:30 pm and then I wasn't even hungry but felt like my blood sugar was dropping and got that foggy feeling - but no hunger.
I have loved it and I do it everyday.0 -
I do daily-shortened-feeding-window style of IF, 16:8 ... 1p-9p is my window, and usually it starts later than that, sometimes it goes later too. I'll throw in a 24h fast now and then.
My version of fast is 'fasted state = no calories', so I'm okay with black coffee, diet sodas, etc.1 -
Im surprised by the difference of opinions on what breaks a fast. Some say anything with calories, others say anything sweet tasting, some say depends on macros involved.1
-
Im just starting, 16:8.0
-
I have coffee with a little half and half and coconut oil in the morning (~100 calories total) but don't eat food until 1:30-2:00. I'm done eating by 8 usually. I'm not strict about my eating window, but having 2 meals works best for me with keeping calories down.
I work out in the morning and while I'm fine to do it fasted, I have to do it caffeinated (45 minute drive to gym + 5 am gym start time), so I count my coffee as my preworkout. As the weather warms up I'd like to switch to iced coffee or tea which I'm fine to do without cream, so I may start a more authentic IF. It will be interesting to see the effect.1 -
I was "taught" that anything that causes an insulin response breaks a fast.
I do 18:6 (feed period, 10am - 4pm) and break my fast with beef bone broth and MCT oil, and sometimes bulletproof coffee, however, these items do not cause insulin spikes, so most folks consume them during their fast. I agree that it's based on personal goals. My goal is T2 diabetes "reversal," eliminating my insulin resistance without meds.3 -
I've been fasting for a long time now....can't really remember when I started. I usually follow at 16:8 IF schedule. Breaking my fast around noonish and wrapping up eating around 7pmish. I consume no calories (black coffee is ok) during my fasting windows.
I throw in a 24 hour fast about once a week. I travel a lot for work and that fast usually happens after I've had a day with higher calories or carbs than usual.
Exercise while fasting hasn't been an issue as long as I'm well salted. Lol. Im partial to trail running and some of my best runs have been while fasting honestly.

I'm aiming for 16 hours no food including at least 13 hours strictly water fasting (per Dr. Satchin Panda Circadian studies). I use Zero app for tracking and flexible schedule as to when I take lunch, so lunch is 16+ hours after end of dinner. My eating window is from about 1 pm to 9pm.
I'm still getting used to this, and often not sleeping very well. I need coffee, but I've been trying to push the "strictly water fasting" time until about 10:30am. I usually have bulletproof coffee with no sweeteners. This easily gets me through until 1pm lunch time without feeling hungry.0 -
I go from around 6pm until around 11am. I find it easy and natural. I always drink my coffee black no sugar so I don't have a problem. Jason Fung, of IF fame, says you can have a teaspoon or two of milk or coconut oil in your coffee if you must. He also allows bone broth because it doesn't spike insulin.1

Want to have your noodle really baked? There's one school of thought that even a "stomach stretch" signal = breaking a fast, i.e. drinking water!!!0 -
Wow!! I definately couldnt do that.0

What do you feel is the most beneficial result from IF?0
-
Hi,
I do 18/6. ( I usually eat my first meal at noon.. second by 6) ... my body seems to love it... sometimes I have a morning treat of coffee with stevia and a splash of unsweetened almond milk and of course water
Good luck!1 -
I rotate with 6:18 with a couple 24 hour fasts a week. I drink coffee and water. On 6:18 days I eat from 2-8. For the 24 hour fasts I cut from 6pm the night before and got to 6pm the next night0
-
I've been doing 18:6 with my eating window at noon to 6pm. When fasting I have nothing but flavored water (like La Croix) and unsweet green tea. No artificial sweeteners of any kind, as Dr. Fung says they can cause an insulin response. I break my fast with a LCHF lunch.0

I'd like to try IF but still don't know how to define when I'm breaking my fast. Is drinking water flavored with Mio considered breaking my fast if they have 0 calories and don't spike my sugars? I usually add lite salt too, to keep up my electrolytes, but that also has 0 calories. I could probably go all day just drinking Mio in my water and never get hungry But I just don't know enough about IF to try it. It kind of scares me, tbh.0
-
The salt is definitely ok, but the sweetness in the mio may spike your blood sugar. Anything sweet can do it in some people. The only way to know for sure is to test your blood glucose. IF is sooo easy. Like Dr. Fung says you just don't eat. Watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIhhrYjVhOk3
-
@xDaniDragonflyx Mio should be fine especially if your main purpose of IF is to maintain a caloric deficit. Keep in mind Dr. Fung's main patient base is diabetics and people with kidney disease, and so they are going to be more sensitive to blood sugar issues.2

Interesting video clip @flitabout38. Thanks.0

So.... I just watched Dr. Fung's whole series on IF, and he says not to add water enhancers, which Mio is, but I'm such a Mio junkie that I don't think I can stop. >_< But I do have a LOT more info on IF now, so thanks guys for sharing things with me.3

Well, I did a fast of 6 days last month. No food just water. I was already keto adapted so I think for me it was easier because of it. But still, I don't think I will do it again. { I want to add that I am on no medications, and have no major medical issues. My daily work is farming so I exercise a lot. I would NOT recommend this for people who are ill or who are unable to walk a flat mile without losing their breath in 60 degree temperatures.}
But it was an interesting experience. I stopped feeling hungry unless I saw food. I was cold all the time. I was very much into ketosis cause my pee sticks were very dark. Everything seemed to go slower including me. I had to drink broth every day (while on low carb I only drink it every 2 or 3 days) to keep from being dehydrated even though I was drinking gallons of water.
That's one thing I feel Dr. Fung, and most fasting gurus, do NOT emphasize enough about straight water fasting. You have to watch your electrolytes and plain water ain't going to do that. You can see some people who record their fasting on VLOGS as they slowly become more and more dehydrated and suffer all the pain that comes with that. I scream at my screen, drink some broth or bullion or even ..gag..gator aide.
Anyway, I did lose a pound a day but it all came back when I went back on my low carb diet. But I have noticed those six pounds have again slipped away during these last 3 weeks. My hair which was gray has gotten more brown and my pierced ears have been trying to heal up. I also found that I had no arthritis pain after day 3. And if I stay away from artificial sweeteners, I have no arthritis pain now at all. The lose skin on my neck seemed to have tighten up some and though weight loss was nothing to write home about, my belly is now much smaller. But even 3 days after I ended my fast, I felt like I had run a marathon. My body felt exhausted and worn out. Now 3 weeks later I feel fine and energetic.
Anyway, I'm going to try fasting 2 days a week once a week now that all my easter guests have gone. I think intermittent fasting will be easier for me.1 -
I usually do 16:8 daily except Sunday. It suits my lifestyle as I am not usually hungry on mormings till about 11am.
I usually have coffee with splash of milk (40 cals) and water in the morning. Sometimes hot lemon ginger tea if my mood feels like it. I was told not to use any sugars even artificial sugar since it will break your fast due to insulin spike.
On Sundays my family like to have breakfast together so I nibble a little something with them.0 -
I am working up to doing a week. My daughter is sort of going to do it with me. I am going to water fast and she is going vegan. So far I am up to 24 hrs pretty sad right? It's so hard with 5 kids and husband who are hungry all the time!!!1

I've seen Fung mention broth a fair amount, but I also don't think he's having people do 6 days fasts either. I think the Snake Diet guy is kind of annoying, but do appreciate his emphasis on "snake juice" which is a DIY electrolyte beverage.1 -

I have similar IF. No coconut oil just half and half. Really strict on my calorie count, workout routine, Mac portions but need more accountability reducing my 6 window. I break with late lunch ~2pm with protein shake and bar after workout.0 -
I'm really only starting to look at IF, and for me, I'm doing a slow intro by skipping breakfast 2-3 times per week. Like others, I have decided to follow the idea that having some fats in my coffee (and therefore not causing an insulin reaction) will be sufficient for me. I figure there's no rush to take it any further quite yet, slow and steady is my motto at this point.1
-
I started my first 24 hour water fast, and so far just a headache, so I think I need some salt. I'm trying to work my way up to regular ADF, but that's definitely down the road.0

I'm not a faster or even intermittant faster but I certainly don't eat/snack all day long as I often did before. I'm sometimes a breakfast skipper and sometimes eat only once a day based on hunger or schedule but it really isn't intentional for me and I always am drinking decaf with half and half...so not fasting.
I'm also not a "Fung Follower" but have read The Obesity Code and do listen to his videos. This one was recently posted on youtube. I find it very interesting and pertinent to this thread:

I've started a new job and having trouble figuring out my meals, etc., so I'm just trying to wait as long as I can to eat so I don't do a specific time frame and just eating mostly cheese with maybe some crackers (I know) and egg salad. Working close with someone makes me fear the breath and pretty much intense smell the keto foods I like have. Oops, more than you asked.1
