Your Friend,

Will post my 3 before bed, but to @SModa61 ’s great query (I’m sorry this has been a trigger for you - really.)
What I wish I had known:
I wish I’d known to stick with the job that brought me joy & was 40 hrs a week & lower stress. It allowed me time to bike & purchase & cook healthy foods.
But I was bored, so everyone, family & employer, encouraged me to take a high pressured, longer hours, stress-filled more prestigious position. Everyone- but most of all ME forgot I had two serous illnesses- both of which become worse with stress & over time, both of which would have been better with continued exercise & healthy, home cooked meals.
I paid & now with COViD continue to pay the price for my desire for more intellectual stimulation when really I should have gone for a little boredom and a lot more health.
A couple of times I’ve taken on a short term consulting- both times stopped. Now, when people contact me, I say no. I’ve finally learned that I must treat caring for myself as my primary task. My eating habits & getting out for my walks take time (On this app, planning, scheduling, keeping unstressed, keeping inspired) & I have finally accepted that.
Sad as all this might sound, I have adapted & am very happy now with my new, joyful & relaxing, creative Artist Life that I have created these past 3 years or so.

Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? yes- Treadmill: 40 min / 1.99 mi
- Back & Biceps (dumbbells) + crunches
- Pool (jumping, dog paddling, lunges, etc)
- After dinner walk: 27 min / 1.43 mi
Today I did a random program on the treadmill which is 40 minutes including the slow 5 minute warmup and 5 minute cool down. The random program does both speed and hill variations and each change lasts only one minute so even going faster than I typically would doesn't cause any knee pain.
I'm learning right now that by tripling my exercise I can eat a lot more food and so far it must be the right amount as I'm still hovering in the 119-121lb range. This is what maintenance looks like.
I'm also learning something new about lifting weights. In the past I did simple workouts of maybe 8 different exercises targeting the main muscle groups 2-3x per week. I always tried to lift more weight to failure but fewer reps. But now that I'm targeting specific muscle groups five days a week (with 5-6 exercises for each) and doing way more sets/reps even if using lighter weights I'm already seeing results in two weeks. My arms are showing definition and they feel pretty firm. My legs were already firm but they're becoming even harder. But more importantly I'm mostly avoiding the joint pain problems because of lower weights. I still get a twinge now and then but then I drop down to the next lower dumbbell.

Like some others who have posted, I wish I'd taken up running earlier in my life. I was 54 or 55 when I started (except for back in the day when I did my fair share of sprinting after the ice cream man - hahahaha). And sooooo out of shape. I'm still slower than that herd of turtles stampeding through peanut butter and, right now, I'm not even running due to heel pain. It might be plantar fasciitis, it might be heel spurs, I don't know... and I'm pretty sure I need new shoes, but can't afford them at the moment. So I walk... but more often I ride, which brings me to... Another thing I wish I'd done earlier was cycling. I used to ride to school, to friends, to the mall, around the neighborhood, then... I stopped. I just started again this year. And I really enjoy it. So, I guess what I'm saying is that I wish I'd been more active from the time I left high school until now. In high school, I was roller skating a few times per week at one of the local rinks, and doing modern dance at school instead of PE. Once I graduated, that all stopped. I've always been more of the sedentary, rather than a rolling stone, type of boulder. I'm happy just reading a book and listening to music. Still am. But I've also discovered that if I don't get out at least a couple of times in a week to ride, walk, or (when I could) run, I get yancy and miss it.9 -

@mshawski - good for you! “If momma ain’t happy, nobody’s happy” is more than just a funny saying, it’s truth!
@Winner_in_Life - I was 49 so I understand what you’re saying. Thanks for sharing about this “little old lady” I hope to be just like her s9meday. What an inspiration.
@clutterqueen - amen.
@JennyRebecca1978 - thanks for sharing that. You are on the right path.
@MadisonMolly2017 - every time you post something like this i think, “wow, she is so smart, wise, and inspiring!”
@victorious55 - I can appreciate your problem with nuts. This is June 9 and you’re 7 days nut free. I’d definitely call that a win
I wish I’d realized that yes, even though I could maintain a weight by eating a half gall9n of ice cream one day and starve myself the next, I was setting myself up for a long term binging problem that would only get worse and eventually pack on nearly 100 pounds. I also want to go back and slap me every time I sat down with the ice cream, or the pie, or the whatever telling myself, “I’m treating myself now because tomorrow I’m starting a diet.” I made every excuse for every bad habit. Except exercise. That’s the one thing I’ve always enjoyed and done in some form. But, like we all know now, you can’t out exercise what you eat.

Something I’ve learned and still have a hard time with is the importance of adding strength training. Cardio, no problem.6 -
So this is the morning of the 10th and "my wish I knew" came to me. I wish I realized that I can lose weight and be healthy while eating regular food.5

Wow, great question. I always believed taking time for me was taking time away from my family. I have to work so whatever spare time I have, I felt guilty not devoting it to my husband and kids. It wasn’t until my late 49s that I began to understand that self care was a necessity and not a luxury. If I had known it earlier, I would have been healthier and happier and so would have the time I spent with my husband and kids.
I did not balance health/work/life well today, or at all. My calories would have been within range if I had exercised. I started to rationalize that there wasn’t time and started blaming the world and oh poor me. But in reality, I now realize that all I had to do was march in place or do some occasional jumping jacks or walk outside around the house a few times in between putting out fires at my desk. I tied myself to the desk. I made that choice, consciously or not. Don’t get me wrong, there are same days, that start out as ordinary days, and then are filled with horrible, terrible events that turn that ordinary day into one of the most memorable of your life. Thankfully, those days are few and far apart in most people’s lives. This was a most ordinary day and I have got to stop rationalizing.

When it came to weight loss and health I wish I knew what actual healthy eating looked like. This app really opened my eyes within the first 3 days of how much I was overeating. Personally I have a really hard time figuring out if I'm hungry or bored because I just feel insatiable. No matter how healthy the food, it all still adds up when you eat too much of it.
✅ Exercise: walking for about 30 minutes around the store while letting ny kid sleep
✅ Calories: managed to stay within green numbers!
✅ Tracking: every food and exercise 😁 I do think I overestimated the servings on some food, but that's okay

Hi. I know for me, if I don’t get enough protein, I can’t stop eating. Then I need enough carbs. Fat seems to work itself out. I’m at around 1,500 calories a day. Of that 100 grams of protein, 150 grams of carbs and whatever the fat percentage turns out to be in the calculation. It took me some time to figure out what works for me, so play around with your percentages to see what works best for you. You can set your macros where you set your calories. Everyone is different and you will tweak a bit here and there for a bit to dial in what your body needs.2 -
