I love to exercise. My favorite kinds are “natural” like biking, running, hiking, gardening. For me, those are all fun, they get me outside, and I need little to no incentive to get me going. However, I thoroughly understand and appreciate the need for some kind of exercise program or class, whether that be at a gym, the YMCA, online, etc. My two online favorites are (1) Fitness Blender, and (2) Essentrics (also called Classical Stretch). What are your favorites? I’m always looking for something new to try. I hear some of you doing an “Epic” workout, whatever that is. Tell me more!9 -
To be honest I don't love to exercise. I do it because it's good for me. I do like to walk outdoors weather permitting. While I enjoy lifting weights my motivation is not always there so I have never been consistent with how hard I push myself. I procrastinate, am easily distracted and get bored with workout routines pretty quickly. Which is why I'm a fan of EPIC. Every day is different. It's easy to do at home. All you need is a mat, selection of dumbbells, sturdy chair and wall for support. The latter two items aren't used a lot (so far).
There are now four programs: EPIC I, II, Heat and III (which just started up). Caroline Girvan the creator of EPIC is a personal trainer in Northern Ireland and started putting the videos on YouTube for her clients during their first lock down. It took off. Her workouts are not for beginners so she created a one week beginner workout for those just starting out. She is buff. Many video workout people aren't so I have more trust in her programs and more hope for better results for myself.
Each program is 10 weeks of working out five days a week with two rest days (one active and one not). In EPIC I, one day a week is devoted to HIIT, one to full body workout and the other three target specific areas of the body. It could be all upper, all lower or specific muscles: abs/core, arms/abs, shoulders, glutes/hamstrings, etc. The full body workout is an hour, HIIT is only 30 mins and the rest are about 40 in the early weeks but increase to about 50 mins in later weeks.
What I like about them is everything is structured in one minute intervals with 30-50 secs of work (depending on exercise) and 10-30 secs of rest. In some cases ab/core work gets no rest. For the most part the longer the rest is the harder the specific exercise is. You earn your rest! Some workouts have no repeat exercises while others do more standard 3-4 sets of the same thing.
She has the 10 week schedule of all the programs on her site. The videos are on YouTube.

I am looking forward to reading everyone's posts! Programs like EPIC seem amazing and I would love to do them, but I'm also very happy with my own routines, and feel I am getting everything I need. My routines are a lot more boring than something as cool as a YouTube series set to music with inspiring bodies showing you how to do them, like EPIC. It's a great formula, and I think people would be wise to start with a proven series like that!
I developed what still serves as the the foundations of my strength exercise routines a little over 4 years ago. I was looking to do full body development with a goal of both strength and hypertrophy muscle training. I wanted it based on all 7 primal movement patterns of the human body (squat, lunge, push, pull, twist, bend and gait), and I wanted to use a variety of compound movements to get that full body workout without having to do dozens of different exercises each day. In the end it mostly resembled your old school type lifter routines, I suppose they have had all this figured out forever!
While I'm avoiding a lot of moves I used to do regularly due to my current battle with plantar fasciitis (lunges, sprints and any weighted carries for example), I still evaluate my weekly routines against those movement patterns and even plug the workouts into Garmin Connect to get an idea of any muscles that are being left out and fill in as needed.
I doubt most want to do such efforts, but at this point for me it's not that much extra effort as I have done this for a while. It's a habit, really. Except actually DOING the exercise 100% of the time! I missed my strength session just this last Friday!7 -

Stretching done
Hour walk and lots of cleaning done

I promised myself yest that the moment i get to or under my goal weight I wldnt be greedy and just start eating at maintaince calories so I jumped on the scale this morning and I'm back under (after the damage from the w/e lol) so I am officially at maintaince from here on out. Bit scared and nervous but also more relived and excited!
@biiketheworld @whatmerunning and @LazyBlondeChef awesome workout ideas thanks for sharing. I do weights 3x a week and walking everyday it's not raining. I also began stretching almost everyday this month. Working out puts me in such a good mood so I make my self do it. I also clean up all day after my very messy but adorable toddler. He he! I find working out to be much easier than the food side. Xo5 -

Thanks so much @biketheworld for introducing this topic with us.
I can’t wait until my passion for fitness returns. I do really enjoy walking outdoors, especially with our puppy as he is a hoot a minute and we can focus together on training behaviours as we do our 45 minute to 90 minute walks each day. I am sweaty with the exertion when I get home and my FitBit reads that I was in the cardio zone for more or all of the walk over tthe past weeks (up from fat burn zone walking).
But soon the heinous white fluff, icy steps and sidewalks will be here again, and will stay for 8 months. It is still like waterskiing right now with the puppy at times — how hard he can pull and how off balance I can be made when he sees a rabbit or squirrel that he needs to chase (we have MANY of each here). So we are really working on that in training and the new harness is helping quite a bit. I have a really good indoor treadmill with up to 15% incline, but it is SO boring.
As I have shared, I love to swim, and it just isn't safe here right now. At some point the double vaccination requirement will be imposed for use of City indoor recreation facilities, but that has been delayed until the QR code system is set up and working.
I have a routine for exercise bands, hand weights, stretching, etc. modified for me by my exercise physiologist, but it is lonely doing it by myself and I find it tedious. I feel like I need to force myself, so I am actively seeking recommendations for something effective and enjoyable.
Looking forward to reading everyone’s insights.

I dropped out of UAC last week, but I'm looking forward to restarting October. I fell and fractured my foot, and with work stress, family stress and all, just don't have it in me to track, exercise and log.
But UAC has helped me so much. I'm going to take a break, and get right back in. I wish everyone the best!11 -

I am so sorry to hear of your fracture. You are in my prayers for quick recovery. Stress is one of those things that come with this type of situation. I pray that God will see you through and give you wisdom to go through it. I also pray that God will grant you favor/favour and compassion in the sight of the people around you.
Please do not drop out. Just come around every other day and read some of the posts. I am sure you will benefit from them.

Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? Yes
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? Yes
Kitchen Closed? Yes
Did you go "nuts" with nuts today? No (21 days-free )
(I go "nuts" with nuts most times, trying to continue a good habit this month. Counting the number of "nuts" free days.) I am still learning a lot about myself in this area!
Pass day 0/3 (this is for accountability to myself and my records).
Thanks so much @biketheworld for today's topic.
One of the things I quickly found out during this weight/healthy journey is the need for exercises. I also learned that I need exercises not just for weight control but to be fit at an older age. I always admire older people who are active, quick on their feet and smart. I have a couple of relatives. I interviewed them and learn from them the secret to their health and wisdom. Read wide, learn new things, and exercise. I want to be like them when I get to their age. I desire younger generation to be around me and learn also from me.
I used to be a gym member until the COVID when all gyms were closed. Did a bunch of YouTube videos during the COVID until I found Caroline Girvan on YouTube. I have thoroughly enjoy her programs. I like the structure. She has write-ups to help you along the way. I am currently on week 10 of EPIC Heat. Once I finished I will begin the EPIC III that she is currently doing.

Epic Day 22 Shoulders and core + 2.5 km walk 😊
Strength training is now a priority 💪 And thanks to Epic I enjoy this. And I LOVE running, unfortunately at the moment I don't have time for both. Our move is only 2 weeks away and it's still a lot to do 🥺5 -

2️⃣ Pass Days Remaining
I love exercising. I use fitnessblender, Darebee, walk for life with Leslie Sansone and a host of other resources. I exercise at home as it means I can use any odd 10 minutes to workout throughout the day, without wasting time travelling to/from a gym. I have dumbbells and resistance bands and improvise whatever else I need. I like doing HIIT walking videos where I can walk and do strength exercises in tandem.
My favourite exercise is dancing.10 -
