And finally, a very warm UAC WELCOME to all of our new members! We're excited to have you join us in November. Please be sure to ask if you have questions or need support. We are a wonderfully diverse group which just means that invariably someone will have some ideas and be able to help you and give advice.
I hope that you'll give this group at least a few weeks to work on cementing (your) good habits. Remember that it takes a little while to build a good habit, so if you find yourself struggling, or are ready to quit, please hang in there!! Perseverance is a foundational trait that will ultimately help you towards your goals.
I know our Canadian friends celebrated Thanksgiving a couple of weeks ago, and for those of us in the USA, Thanksgiving is coming up fast.... and then Christmas too! 🎄🎅🏾 Yikies!!

Awesome accomplishment everyone!10 -
I’ve been almost non existent here for the past week or so. Fell into a terrible slump/depression. I’ve been eating everything in sight. I’d planned a 68 mile bike ride for Sunday on a trail that right now is probably aglow with fall color, but decided not to go partly because the weather was iffy, partly because I just couldn’t muster the energy. As I was eating Halloween candy last night, I actually thought to myself, “I wonder how fast I can gain that 30 pounds back,” and I didn’t even care. I’ve been using an excel spreadsheet to record daily weight because it includes a logarithm that removes the crazy daily swings and I’ve really appreciated that. However, this morning I opened up the Happy Scale app which I haven’t used in several months and was jolted by how far I’ve come since February. Then I entered my historical weights from the first day of each month. The app breaks down my beginning weight to goal weight into 10 segments and I’ve accomplished 5 of them - I’m half the way there! It’s taking me forever, but I realized I do not want to throw that progress away. So I’ll keep slogging my way along, I should probably change my username to “aslothcouldbeatme” but whatever. The issues that threw me into this slump are still there, some I can’t do anything about, one I’m going to address today. The sun is shining, the colors are reaching their peak, my backyard is practically glowing. Life really is good and I need to stop feeling sorry for myself. Sorry for the long post.17

@biketheworld
I don’t know about everyone else but this Halloween candy gets me every year especially the good stuff the mini snicker bars milky ways etc I did better when I kept the candy that required dental wok lol thank god it’s over!! I think it cost me 3.5 lbs over the month so now to remove it it shouldn’t take long. I will remember my words of advice stay focused don’t eat back the exercise calories and no snacking after dinner unless it’s healthy12 -
@biketheworld - girl, I am right there with you. But today starts a new month, and we got this10

Congrats to all the winners! 🎉8

@biketheworld Way to snap back!!!! You are very inspiring!
I am looking forward to reading everyone's plan.
Someone posted an interesting idea in another group. He suggested making yourself maybe three fancy holiday "passes". Then every time he is tempted at a holiday party, event, meal, etc. he will ask himself, "Is this worth one of my passes?" When a pass is used it is 100% guilt free. When they are gone, they are gone.
Anyway, I do like the idea of consciously planning, and then allowing myself to enjoy the experience rather than feeling guilty and remorseful.
As I mentioned yesterday, I am pretty sure Thanksgiving is going to be a pass day for me, but I am still formulating what that looks like. Alcohol or no? White meat, or the dark meat I really want? Small portions, or heap the plate?7 -
1 Nov
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? yes
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? yes
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? yes
As far as holiday or eating out with a group I have the following strategies firmly in place for years.
#1 I remember that eating with family or a group is mainly about being together and socializing and not the food
#2 The worst calories are done while WAITING for the meal. So, I typically will have a salad at my house before I leave so that I am not starving waiting or grazing on appetizers ad nauseum.
#3 Take home. Pre guesstimate what you want to have within your day or week allocation and either get a to go box or have your family who hosts let you do the tupperware thing.
So for instance I might have white turkey at the meal with my family but I might bring home the dark turkey to add to meals for the rest of the week. I love leftovers so not a problem for me. Also, the holiday dinner is normally at my brother's house. If I was cooking and hosting it would be even easier to pre track what I wanted.
#4 You are NOT going to feel better if you just PIG OUT and HEAP everything on your plate. You will probably feel sick. So why not just choose what you want to eat for that meal and take home other things you want later on?
#5 drinks - for me not an issue because I just don't care for alcohol but you should fit it in if it's important to you.
#6 desserts - for me just not really worth it. I can pass and have coffee or tea while around the table. Sometimes there is a fruit salad available also. The sugar rush from a lot of pie or other baked goods usually ends up giving me a migraine the next day.
#7 You are in it for the long term and tomorrow no one but YOU will care about how much you ate or did not eat at the meal. Put yourself first.
Just some quick notes.11 -
@biketheworld I was in a similar place back in February of this year. After 3 months of bitter cold and a knee injury (and not being able to walk outside much - which is my exercise of choice!). I was getting pretty depressed, and I didn't know how to snap myself out of it. I was so afraid to lose all my hard work up to that point. So I put my daily calorie goal up to a maintenance level, and basically "made" myself do the bare minimum (20 mins) of something most days, just to report in to the UAC. My plan was to finish out Feb that way and perhaps even into March if I needed to. My thoughts were that whenever I did finally get to my goal weight, I would have to "work" on staying at maintenance.... so I needed to "practice" that effort NOW!!!!
I made myself continue to check into the UAC every single day, and knew that I was just going through the motions and not really contributing much. It did eventually work out for me - within 4-5 weeks I found that I was feeling much better (mentally) and was able to pull myself out of it. (A few days of warmer weather in the early spring helped a lot too!!) When it was all said and done, I found that I had basically maintained my weight through that difficult time.
I know everyone's "hard times" are different, but I want to encourage you to stick with it, and do what you need to do to MAINTAIN where you are and not lose any more ground. Please let us know how we can help.11 -
NOV 1 - Pass day

Pass day8

It’s 8pm here in cold and dark Wales! I weighed this morning - 74.5kg. That’s 5kg down since I started my current efforts to improve my diet and health.
Exercise: 30 min brisk dog walk up the hill this morning. ✅
Tracked all my food. ✅
Calorirs within my target for the day. ✅
My plan for November is to weigh myself daily and stick to my breakfast of home made porridge and fruit. This sets me up well for the day. Without the morning reminder I think I’d find this far harder.
Good luck everyone,
Catherine11 -
Date: November 1st
Exercised?: Yes. I took an hour long walk and did a single push-up haha. I’m planning on doing a push-up for the date, e.g today is 1 and so on the 14th, I’ll do fourteen push-ups!
Calories?: Yes.
Tracked?: Yes.
This is my first time participating in a challenge, by the way.10 -
@biketheworld, hugs to you honey! I am soooo with you, a couple months ago I was in the same spot! It was because of “this group” I was able to get out of “ a terrible slump/depression.” I don’t reply much BUT I do read every day.
What really has helped me is “The Miracle Morning” book, if I remember right somebody from this group suggested it.
Like @Mrs_Hoffer said, “I made myself continue to check into the UAC every single day,”
You BOTH are such an inspiration
You have this, WE HAVE this, take one day at a time……10 -
Yes x 3
@SummerSkier : thanks for the tip about pre-gaming on a salad!
Goals for month: continue to weight lift 3x a week, increase sleep, say no to wknd work obligations more than yeses, try OMAD the week prior to or of Thanksgiving, and enjoy Nov!
Congrats to the Winner's circle!!11 -
I had to post and run earlier. Wasn’t sure if I’d be able to log back in as toddler was going a bit mental this evening.
I tracked and ate at maintenance, which is on plan while I’m under the weather. I hope tomorrow to do a light workout… anything, since I haven’t workout at all in several days.
I’m so sick of getting sick every other week and having to stop working out. It makes progress painfully slow and I feel like I’m constantly starting over. I am doing everything I can think of to strengthen my immune system but if anyone has any suggestions I’m all ears!
All this sitting around whilst sick inspired me to sign up for a 10K in April. I can’t wait to start training. I love running and miss it so really want to get back into it.10 -
November 1
3 x Yes
Today's exercise was an upper body strength routine (3 sets dumbbell bench press, banded lat pull-down, banded tricep extension, dumbbell wrist curl)
Having planned for a potential week of pass days starting next Monday, my goals for November are to make the Champions list, and make myself proud of whatever I manage to achieve this next month. I have no plans to give up on anything at all, and will keep doing all that I can, as soon as I can do it, and do it all wisely. To avoid using unnecessary excuses, while also not being foolish to enable proper healing. I have set myself up to be successful by bringing myself very near maintenance calories over the last couple weeks, and plan to have a small caloric overage (high in protein) while healing from the upcoming surgery. I will also miss some exercise in that first week, but how much is yet to be determined. Then to begin bringing it all back on track for the last couple weeks of November...11 -
Congratulations winners circle excellent achievement.
Well I'm back. I went on holiday two weeks ago and didn't have reliable internet access so I took a week off of logging... Which turned into two weeks. I really need to get back to it though.

My Plan? Well, I’m going away on holiday – flying abroad for the first time in over 2 years, (fingers crossed no last minute Covid restrictions) – for a fortnight over the end of November through to December. So, my plan includes being very careful over the next two/three weeks. Looking forward to some sun, it’s getting cold, wet, and dark here now.
Love that quote @TerriRichardson112!
@biketheworld – good to see you back, you can do this.

Walked 1, ran 3
My November goals, outside of the UAC goals are:
Run a total of 60 miles
Stretch/foam roll for at least 10 minutes a day
When I started my journey, I drank a lot of green juice. (Either straight celery or celery based.) It seemed to really help set the tone for the day, it helped my digestion, and it helped me get more vitamins in. I stopped drinking it because it’s $4 a bottle and increasingly hard to find around here without driving out of the way to get it. I started drinking it again at the beginning of this year, and I again had a lot of success. I again stopped because of the cost. I got two weeks worth of it today, and plan on going out of my way to keep it in my daily plan. Perhaps it does something physically, perhaps it’s a placebo effect - either way it seems to work for me so now I need to budget like $120 worth of juice into the month. Ugh saying the total like that makes me queasy. Lol. Fingers crossed the stores I can still find it at don’t stop carrying it like all the stores I normally shop at.

Congratulations to everyone in the Winners’ Circle and a huge shout out to @SummerSkier @bradkcrew @DebyS137 & @lovingcaring for their extraordinary achievement of no pass days in October. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
@biketheworld Goodness, your post hit home and all the feels. The journey is long, and I am tired already. But that is why, for me, UAC is so important and valuable - we are not alone. I find that when I purposefully force myself to have self-compassion for myself as a human being — rather than as a human doing — I can carve out some space for self care. Lots of material has been written on this; each person is so different. DM me if you want some personal support? 💛 Thanks for your courage to post and share. You have come so far, and no, you are not slower than a sloth. 🦥 Be kind to yourself.
Welcome back @Geneveremfp — missed you and your posts.
@taurie I have no advice, but for my words of encouragement. It is, in my opinion, probably the worst time to be a toddler right now (and the parent of one). The lack of “normal” and predictable patterns for socialization (so much being cancelled), increased anxiety everywhere (which they are so sensitive to), isolation, waves of exposure to everything in between periods of living in a bubble, and it is fall now — the season for the manifestation of the worst outcomes for the very necessary biologic process of building an immune system. My heart goes out to all parents of littles right now. 💛
@bradkcrew I love the idea of fancy event passes for planned events and how it puts the power right into our own hands. I am going to do this, and start my planning further in advance of the “day of” for one of our two wine tastings in November and my book club meeting. Thanks for this April!

Congratulations to all October Winner Circle members & Champions!
Sorry to hear @biketheworld but I am very impressed with how you are dealing with it. One week to dig yourself out is simply amazing. Good luck with it. And great advice @Mrs_Hoffer! One I going to remember the next time I get myself in a funk. Big hug to @mshawski. I really feel for your situation (perhaps because I've gone through infertility and can relate to the anger, frustration, loss & helplessness).
Some good advice was given so far for the upcoming holidays. In recent years I haven't had that much of a problem over the actual Christmas break. But I've learned that this is because I am an emotional eater triggered by stress and we are always given time off at Christmas. There's not a lot of stress for me when I'm not working. And I have a lot of time to cook healthily and exercise. I have struggled with work get-togethers but last year Covid trimmed those down to just a Christmas goodie basket; hopefully it will be the same this year. And not being in the office means I get to miss all the baked goodies people like to bring in (thankfully).
Yes x 3 for me today. Yesterday we closed our pool and yesterday I bought some thermal long underwear LOL. My plan was to be ready to head out on my bike with no excuses for how chilly it would be. I persevered last November wearing just yoga pants but they really aren't great for bike riding when the temps are in the 40's F and windy.
