The effects of a bad food choice take so long to unravel with exercise that the food discipline is what it all comes down to for me. I do exercise to feel good and I love what my body can do now (and all the other benefits) but I also exercise to have more food. I don't NEED to and I eat to what I do (so I can do less on a certain day and feel fine to scale back accordingly) but I am definitely motivated by the fact that extra exercise means extra calories to fuel me.4 -

Right joining in a bit late - although before the cut off.
My older boy is turning 5 in a week and a half so we had a birthday party for him on Saturday. It's been a bit bonkers planning for that and getting everything sorted and then tidied up.
So far I've been mostly 3x yes with one pass day.
On the 4th I didn't track. I suspect I went over aswell. I did do 18000 steps though so very active and busy. Lots of party food and Costco sheet cake.
I suspect December is going to be a hard month but I just hope I'll stay here and make it to the end. If I could lose a couple of pounds that would be a great extra.7 -

I’d like to add to the article that summerskier shared I to have been active and went up and down with weight more up and then stayed steady, the past 5 years I have exercised and watched calorie intake with the re learning process of incorporating healthy foods in my diet. All is true one will work but not efficiently without the others. I do find myself trying not to eat back my exercise calories but I am not always successful.
My December goals are to stay focused and keep up with exercise but still enjoy the holiday season.5 -

Absolutely true that exercise alone has never been enough for me. Actually, if I am not careful, exercise makes me more hungry and I eat more. What's worst is exercise in the cold - just realizing that my accidental pass day on Saturday was probably due to that - a morning in the cold at the Christmas Tree Farm (doing very little exercise) making me extra hungry and harder to resist the takeout.
I do eat back my exercise calories - but they are pretty minimal, usually about 150 per day. Also, I try to exercise the same amount every day, so there is no need to do averaging. I find that eating my exercise calories motivates me to fit my minimal exercise into my day, knowing that if I don't then I'll have to take the cheese off my salad or something sad like that.
But I have often wondered when I see exercise totaling 1000 calories or so, how people do that, especially if you only exercise like that a few times a week. Averaging that kind of thing would definitely make more sense to me. Maybe one day I'll have time for that kind of exercise! And if I do I will keep that tip in mind.
This week I am back to my "usual" calorie plan. We have eaten all the leftovers from Thanksgiving and from our takeout Hanukkah feast. So I think I'm ready to get back on track. I hope so! For a few weeks until Christmas at least.5 -

Coming back here to thank @SummerSkier for this daily post. It really hit home for me. I've been kind of feeling in a rut and getting annoyed with how hungry and prone to binging I am on non-run days. I played with the TDEE calculator and I am much under what it says I should be netting daily, and I've decided that instead of shooting for a net of 1500 a day and eating back my exercise calories I'm raising my daily goal to 1975 (what the TDEE calculator says I should eat a day to lose 1lb a week) and not eating back my exercise calories. My exercise average per day since July 6, 2021 is 575 calories so that evens out. I'm excited about this plan, and I'm hoping it keeps me from running into as many PB standoffs I can't get out of on non-run days when I'd only burn like 200 calories instead of 700.
Also, what's the worst than can happen? I plateau for 6 months? LOL. Oh wait, I already did that. LOL.
Excited about continuing this venture for the first time in a while...9 -
OK ... I am SURE (cause I scrolled right from the top of pg 1!) that I haven't reported yet ...

Exercise (finished up my exergame "tour" *aka opened up / developed everything there was to do* so starting a brand new "Right from the beginning with new character & name" tour.

In goal left all the minimal-earned exercise calories from a less active-than-lately day uneaten, but was right up near the brim of where I SHOULD be for calorie intake.2 -
@Caroline_slowandsteady I don't know how people can burn 1000 calories of exercise either unless they're serious runners.
I also wonder about the burning of calories as reported by various fitness devices. I believe most people already realize that MFP has excessively high calorie burn rates. I find it odd that Apple shows way more burned calories on 20-30 min treadmill walk than an hour EPIC workout especially when my heart rate is sometimes higher with EPIC than the treadmill. It could be the program I'm using which is Functional Strength Training and how they calculate the active calories. I assume the non-active are just based on current weight listed in the Health app. Maybe I need to choose a different workout program to see how it compares. I'll experiment over the next couple of weeks.
Regardless, I'd much rather underreport than overreport.2 -

As for accuracy of calorie burns, I can say that my weight loss was roughly as expected for my caloric deficits over that time. But I also only trust calorie burn estimates from cardio, and not so much from strength routines. I see some wild differences reported sometimes between one session and the next even if they were all the same weights/movements. For cardio I can expect a certain burn per mile.1 -

Just realized now that this post is sitting in my “drafts”…. Oops — but thank goodness for the drafts function!
🌟 Tracking
🌟 Calories
🌟 Exercise - so much shoveling snow ❄️❄️❄️❄️ 45 minutes total over two sessions plus two shorter dog walk (total time 25 minutes).
Husband’s back is a disaster after the last blizzard (the issues didn’t show up until a week later) and is on day four of daily chiropractor appointments. He playing the first of three performances of The Messiah tonight, so we are trying to preserve his ability to work. He plays trumpet and the big showstopper (for us, anyway) is The Trumpet Shall Sound. The holiday season really starts for us when we hear it live. Thank goodness we can return to “safe” concert experiences this year. Tonight is the youth choir’s performance; tomorrow night is mine (the symphony’s Philharmonic Chorus).

Thank you for the really thought provoking opening post @SummerSkier and for all the insights shared by the group. Still thinking all this through.
@Caroline_slowandsteady I have exactly the same experience with exercise in the really cold weather (-34 C with the windchill right now; -29 F)… I honesty don’t think it is just cravings or boredom — It takes so much energy just to keep warm. The effect is felt that day and if I deny feeding that hunger (filling instead herbal tea, warm water, etc.) I am in a days long feeling really chilled and cold (am experimenting with increasing healthy fats during these experiences) and very hungry.
Happy birthday to you @Slimpossible007 🥳
Hope you feel better soon @mrs_hoffer. Bronchitis is exhausting and it is really taking it out of you. 💛2 -
