@shanaber I don't have any real personal experience with a bunion (I maybe have a very mild one) but my sister had bunion surgery on both feet. It was a tough one to recover from but she is glad she did it because the pain was bad. Her bunions were pretty severe. I'm sometimes tempted to try those alignment socks that separate out your toes because I think it would feel good. I don't think they correct alignment really but they may help relieve some pain like stretches do.

Treadmill run before strength training today. Didn't quite leave myself enough time to get 3 miles in but got close. I practiced rope climbing a little after strength class because I have a spartan race this weekend. The last one I did was in September and I haven't really done any specific training since then. Hopefully I'll survive This one's a 5k and pretty flat. Probably going to be extremely muddy, which I do not love.6 -
Like you I don't use a lot of detergent on my clothes, running or otherwise and I definitely don't use fabric softener of any kind on my running clothes. Fabric softener ruins the sweat wicking capability that we all enjoy. I also usually wash mine in hot water - haven't ever used the sanitize cycle on them though.
@eleanorhawkins that trail sounds awesome. I did the same when we were in Zion. I couldn't pass up on the trail runs up the hills even though I definitely didn't have the right shoes for them. I had to laugh about the ranger... didn't you have another encounter that was similar with a ranger at a different location a while back?
@shanaber I am forever coming across/having encounters with strange men... there's something about the women in my family that attracts them. My mother and I have been randomly serenaded on buses and in the street, delirious homeless men always seem to have something very important they need to tell me, and if there's a flasher or weirdo in the area I'm running in I am bound to come across him. That is why I prefer to run in the mountains... the weirdos usually don't venture that far off the beaten track. It was also the reason I signed up for those personal defence classes. There have only been a handful of occasions that I've felt threatened rather than amused, but I feel a little more confident now I have some basic notions of what to do if someone grabs me.
Re: laundry... I always rinse my tops and hang them to dry as soon as I take them off, and I never use fabric conditioner, I have psoriasis and that is one of the things that upsets it the most. I bought some special base wash stuff specifically for technical clothes to see if I could get the stink out of my favourite race shirts, but even that hasn't gotten rid of it completely. Trying to come to terms with the fact that they're going to have to be binned. The sports detergent I've been using comes in capsules, maybe I'll try and find a liquid one and try reducing the amount I put in. Otherwise, I'm going to try soaking them in pure white vinegar... figure if it ruins them I was going to have to throw them out anyway.
@7lenny7 it was funny, I was thinking earlier about your comment about the 50k and how I'm in awe of you just being able to decide to run a 50k and go do it. That is so impressive!
But that got me to thinking that a couple of years ago I was in awe of everyone here who could do that with a HM and how that inspired me to get myself to a level of fitness where I could do the same, which I now have.
That, in turn, made me think of how much we take our abilities and achievements for granted. Nowadays I get frustrated if a 10 mile run feels like hard work, but not all that long ago a 10-mile run was HUGE.
I'm rambling, but what I'm getting at is those of us who have been doing this crazy running thing for some time should remember to be proud of what we can do, and those who are new to it should realise that although it may all sound gigantic and unattainable, before they know it they'll be doing so much more than they thought they could and getting complacent about it.7 -
@katharmonic Good luck with your Spartan Run this weekend. I hope it isn't as muddy as you expect. If it is, channel your inner child and enjoy the mess.
@eleanorhawkins Have you tried to add baking soda to your wash. That seemed to help when I was trying to get the stink out of some of my running gear. Glad you took the self defense class and feel more confident. I'd like to do that at some point. You make a good point about running abilities. I haven't gotten to the point that 10 miles is "easy" or "mundane," but do often feel 2 or 3 miles isn't a biggie anymore when it wasn't too long ago that I was having a hard time with those.

I’m finally joining the running party and have gotten caught up on reading, liking and hugging. I got home from Ireland about 10 pm last night. I think I had been up and traveling for 24 hours when I finally got to bed. Still woke and was up at 5:00 this morning though. It was raining and has been off and on all day so I chose to do a strength session inside instead of running. I finished the month of May with 71.51 miles falling a little short of my 75 mile goal. I was able to get in only four runs while on vacation. Some days we were catching buses or trains or planes early, sightseeing all day, and just no time for anything extra. I did get a lot of walking in, the weather was perfect most days and I had a great time. I ran one time in Killarney for 7.1 miles. This was just out of the downtown area, through a residential area and along the road. I ran twice in Galway along the lake and then along the waterfront on a beautiful paved trail for 5.4 miles and 7.01 miles. I ran once in Dublin in Phoenix Park which is a beautiful green space in the city with paved and grassy trails for 8.58 miles. My goal for June will be 75 miles again.7
-
8 trail miles today.
49/160 miles for June
Just running. No photographing, no birding, no foraging, no rock hounding, no geocaching. Just running. Tough start but I'm happy with the overall effort. In the 7th mile a stick jumped up and tried to impale my foot by jabbing my shoe between the tongue and the upper. Damn that hurt! It was about as thick as my thumb and I hit it with enough force to break it off, leaving 10 inches stuck in my shoe. I had to pull up and walk it off for about 5 minutes before running again. I don't think it's will amount to much but it sure hurt in the moment.
@martaindale looks like a really nice place to run
@shanaber glad the shoes are working out so far. Hopefully they're a suitable replacement for other model. Can't help you with bunions...I don't even know what they are, though I've heard of them.
Thanks, @quilteryoyo ! That 50k will definitely require a lot of power hiking. Nice job on your Speed Play!
Good luck on the Spartan race, @katharmonic !
@eleanorhawkins I understand your larger point, and you're absolutely right, but I do have to say that this 50K race I'm hoping to register for isn't just spontaneous idea for me. I'm in training for a really tough 52 mile race in September (with 12,500 ft of elevation gain, and loss) and need a 50K race as part of the training. Ideally it would be in early to mid August, but I'll take what I can fit into my schedule. It just might happen that I'll be able to run a 50K in August as well and I'd love that to work out. I also should be averaging about 48 miles/week for the 4 weeks leading up to the July 50K, so it's not a stretch that I'm doing it.
@Teresa502 welcome back from your trip! That sounds like you got some great running in.
6 -
@Teresa502 I'm glad you are home and enjoyed your trip. I had totally forgotten you were going and wondered why I was seeing so much walking and not a lot of running. Any pictures of your running in Ireland?
Wow @7lenny7 . I'm glad that stick didn't hurt you any worse and hope it's okay tomorrow. Thanks for the kudos. I'm trying. Sounds like you have a lot of miles to cover this summer!
1 Jun - Walk - 1.00 mile - driveway laps and trimmed trees for 1.75 hours
2 Jun - Walk - 1.00 mile - treadmill
3 Jun - Walk - 0.70 mile - Ran 2.50 miles - driveway laps
4 Jun - Walk - 0.70 mile - Ran 3.00 miles - driveway laps
5 Jun - Walk - 1.00 Mile - driveway laps
6 Jun - Walk - 0.70 mile - Ran 2.60 miles - driveway laps
7 Jun - Walk - 0.70 mile - Ran 2.30 miles - driveway laps
16.2/80 miles for the month
After work today I went out for a 30 minute (actual time was 31:17 minutes) Foundation Run on the driveway. It was shady, but had been raining today, so was pretty humid and still 80°F. So, it was a sweat fest, even though I was going slow. I managed to keep my HR under 143 for the first 16 minutes of the run and then under 148 until the last three minutes, with a max of 151 bpm, so I'll call it a successful run.6 -
@katharmonic Good luck on the Spartan race!
@Teresa502 glad you had a great time in Ireland! Sounds amazing.
@7lenny7 glad you weren't seriously hurt by that stick 😳 Good running though!
6 easy treadmill miles this evening. Just felt like I needed that.

Thank you @quilteryoyo and @7l3nny7. I am setting my goals for the Spartan at "have fun" and try not to lose a shoe in the mud
Ouch @7lenny7 that freak stick attack sounds painful. Good luck with all your miles this summer.
@teresa502 welcome back! Sounds like you must have had a fabulous trip. Good job getting in quite a bit of running! Can't wait to see some pics.
@quilteryoyo nice run today despite the heat and humidity.

I ran outside from the gym before my yoga class today. I was going to do treadmill but I couldn't justify being inside when the weather was decent. I did a little loop somewhat different than my usual route and that kept me a little more motivated.5 -
June Goal: 100 Miles
6/1: 5.51 miles
6/2: 5.04 miles
6/5: 7.10 miles
6/7: 5.51 miles
23.16/100 miles completed for June
I ran 5.5 miles today. It wasn't a bad run, but it was too warm to be a great run. You know when you get up at 4:30 in the morning and it is 80°F it is going to be a hot run. But there was some breeze and that helped.
@7lenny7 Sunny lives in a run down house next door to her owners. She lives by herself but there are some ducks and chickens that sometimes come inside her house. I just realized I said Sunny, not Lilly. 😊
@katharmonic Good luck on the Spartan!
@Teresa502 Glad you are back and that you were able to get some running done on your trip.
@7lenny7 Glad you weren't seriously injured.

I went out in the rain for a run on back roads today. It was nice, but I definitely picked the wrong day to wear the new road shoes I took out of the box and have only run in once. Oh well.
Shoesthat's dirt and pieces of whatever grain I ran through in the field, all over me
I made a decision about my race signup in August, and wrote to the organizer to ask them to switch me from the marathon to the 25k instead. With the elevation, the 25 feels like a marathon anyway, and I just have enough stress in my life right now, that I don't need the extra stress of marathon training. And if I'm seeing it as a stressful thing looming over me, that's not fun, and fun is my whole point. It's honestly a relief, and I'm looking forward to my summer and the race now.
Also I'm pretty sure if I did the marathon, the training + race would leave my body trashed and unable to sign up for the crazy "hałda extreme" race 2 weeks later. I don't know what to call that in English - "hałda" translates as "heap", but that doesn't seem to adequately explain the huge piles of dirt or whatever that result from coal mining, that we'll be running all over. I think I'll try the 11k option for that.
Highlights of today's run: chased a pheasant down this path: and was serenaded by a cuckoo bird. Kinda makes you start questioning what you're doing, but the bird is probably right, haha.8 -
@7lenny7 ah ok that makes sense, guess I missed or forgot your greater plans. I'm possibly doing something similar with a couple of mountain HMs in September and early October in preparation for my 35k at the end of October. Still damn impressive though, even more so when you talk about more than one 50k race relatively in a row lol.
Sounds like your game of stick or snake would almost have been better off being a snake! Hope there's no long-lasting damage.
@polskagirl01 well done making that decision, I'm sure it was a tough one but it sounds like it was the right one. We do need to remember that we're meant to enjoy these things! I saw something on social media the other day that reminded me of that... a spectator sign towards the end of some marathon that read "remember you PAID to do this!"
As I'm going to the UK on the 18th, my crazy mind decided I need to get this month's HM distance done this weekend just in case I can't do it after I get home again, so I've tweaked this week's runs by shortening today's and tomorrow's to balance out the mileage. It was already around 27C (80F ish) at 8 am, so I was quite glad it was only 2 miles. Such a relief not to have to force myself to run mid-morning anymore. I want to make a solo venture up to the top of the nearest mountain on Saturday morning, really need to make sure I'm up and out there early to avoid the heat.

Thanks @katharmonic . I was thinking last night how I really need to run somewhere besides my driveway. I'm getting tired of doing laps, so I can see how changing up your route a little bit is motivating. Great running.
Nice job on the treadmill run @Scott6255 .
@kgirlhart That is hot for 4:30 am! Great job on getting it done.
@polskagirl01 You just broke your shoes in right! Now you won't worry about getting them dirty. Nice running and love the road and wildlife.
Great running and planning @eleanorhawkins . You are having hot weather too. It does make a difference.3 -
Good morning/afternoon! Last night I went to watch the synchronous fireflies at Rocky Fork State Park in Erwin, TN. It was pretty cool to see them in action and to get to see the Blue Ghost fireflies also. Unfortunately, the peak viewing time was 10:15 pm so I didn’t get home and in bed until almost 1:00 am. Managed to get up at 6:00 this morning and drag my butt out for a 4 mile run. The firefly event is only for three or four evenings and you have to enter a lottery system to get selected to attend the viewing. Tonight is the last night and since rain is in the forecast, they invited the lottery winners for tonight to attend last night also. Even still, there were only about 40 people there.
@shanaber – One of my close friends had bunion surgery in September of last year. It was using a relatively new technique and only one doctor in our area does it. Hers was pretty severe and had given her problems for years. I think he also shortened a toe while he was at it. She was out of commission for a few weeks but was back running by the first of the year and ran a marathon last month. I think the surgery technique and recovery time has really improved in recent years.
Sounds like a wise decision moving to the 25K @polskagirl01. Good reminder that we are doing this for fun and for our health and when it causes stress, it’s time to reevaluate and move on.
A few pics from my runs in Ireland are in the spoiler below.
Overlooking the town of Killarney.
This beautiful building appears to be an old hospital. I had to run closer so I went over to it. It was enclosed by a fence and a few of the windows were broken out making it seem a little spooky.
A walk on the Aran Islands
Found a wonderful running path along the shore in Galway.
Views walking along the Cliffs of Moher.
Some of the deer in Phoenix Park in Dublin. The park had grassy and paved trails.
You simply can't visit Ireland without visiting a pub!7 -

@Teresa502 Glad you had a good time in Ireland. The pictures look beautiful! Definitely going to have to get there. Also the fireflies sound so cool. We don’t have them here but I remember seeing them at my great grandparents house in Missouri growing up. Magical!
@eleanorhawkins I totally get what you are saying about looking back at where you started with running. I was the same way. I set out with the goal of being able to run a 5k a few days a week. A HM seemed like an insurmountable distance. Now I have done several and am building up to marathon training, a sentence I never thought I would utter. I’m not quite to the point where I am in HM distance shape year round, but that is actually a goal I am setting for myself coming out of marathon training. I still look at the super long distances and think it just doesn’t seem possible to run those, but when I look back I can really appreciate that I am doing something now that I didn’t think I was capable of years ago.
@katharmonic Good luck on your spartan race! I have done exactly 1 obstacle race. I hated it with every fiber of my being and will never do it again. Never.

June total: 31.7/117 miles
6/1: 4.1 mile
6/2: 3 miles
6/3: 3.2 miles
6/4: 8.2 miles
6/5: 3.2 miles
6/6: 5 miles
6/8: 5 miles
Rest day yesterday. My husband joined me in the hill country a couple of days ago so we did some much needed yard work in the morning then retreated into the AC and watched movies for the rest of the day.
Today, I ran 5 miles. Not much cloud cover today so my sunblock got a good workout too. The breeze is pretty steady out here so that helps a lot with the feel of the warmer temps. I get out around 7am most days so as I am finishing the sun is getting to a point that I get to experience the full sun. It’s amazing how the same temperature feels so much warmer if the sun is on you.4 -
01.06. 5.52km at 8:09min/km
02.06. 3.00km at 7:46min/km
08.06. 3.02km at 8.08min/km
11.50/60km
Quite far behind, at 4.5km but I was on a super strenuous short trip to Serbia, getting up at 5 to catch my flight, being rather tired all trip long and still walking long distances, at humid 30+ C. So that was totally worth it. Today's run didn't go too well, but that's not surprising. It never does after flights for some reason. So whatever. I started again.
Btw, how come I don't get notifications if someone mentions me within a group?3 -
@polskagirl01 sounds like you've made a good decision and I hope it really helps reduce your stress.
@teresa502 gorgeous pictures. I want to run that path in Galway and see those cliffs!
Thanks @kgirlhart and @martaindale
@martaindale sounds like obstacle races may not be your thing?? Lol. I think I'm winding down on my obstacle racing enthusiasm but I had 4 more races paid for that got deferred so I will see if I can finish that out. I know what you mean about being amazed about where you'd never thought you'd be in running. Good luck with your marathon training - you'll rock it. (And that's where I say never again - to marathon training and running a marathon )
@yirara I don't know why you don't get notifications but I'm mentioning you to test it out.

Decent mid-week run today. I met my most dedicated marathoner friend for her "easy 4" tonight after work. It was only low 70s but I felt very sweaty after when I went into the grocery store right by the trail. But dinner and dog treats had to be obtained.5 -

6/7: 5.51 miles
6/8: 6.01 miles

I thought today's run would be a struggle because it was 80°F when I got up. But it turned out to be a pretty good run. The sprinklers were on at the courthouse, so I ran through them and it really helped. I ended up running 6 miles today.
Beautiful pictures @teresa502

@7lenny7 - Ouch! Hope your foot is ok from the stick incident! Sounds like a great run until that point!
@polskagirl01 - that path could almost qualify for a Spartan race... I am amazed your shoes didn't end up muddier but they are definitely broken in now! Speaking of that, I had a running acquaintance tell me once to kick some dirt on my new shoes because they were just to bright and new 😁
@katharmonic - good luck with your Spartan race! Hope there are no lost shoes!
@eleanorhawkins - I also am amazed sometimes when I look back to not even liking to run, most of my life actually even as a kid, then finding it a challenge that I was determined to overcome, to getting to the point that I loved it and finally, to not being able to even imagine not running. For me now I also have to consider that I am very lucky to still be able to run at my age. I see so many others my age and younger even, who are barely able to walk a mile let alone run many.
@Teresa502 - Love the Ireland pictures! It is definitely on my bucket list places. My family is from the UK in general (England and Scotland on one side and Ireland on the other) so I really need to get there and explore (and run!). Di you plan the locations on your own or through a tour/travel group?
I have never heard of synchronous fireflies. I do remember seeing fireflies as a kid when we visited family in TN.
I am going to ask my PCP for a referral to a podiatrist in Oct when I see her for my physical unless it gets much worse. I am hoping for a nonsurgical correction if one exists but it may be to the point that surgery is my only option.
@AlphaHowls - 1500 days!! Wow over 4 years!! And over 2 of it at HM distance! You are just amazing!
@yirara - We used to get notifications on mentions in the forums but with the changes made recently it seems that went away along with the ability to search within a discussion... When I was flying a lot for work it was tough getting a run in after. I am not sure if it is because the travel is stressful and tiring or if it has to do physiologically with the flying.
No run for me yesterday or today. Yesterday I had PT and then my follow up with the ortho doc. My shoulder is doing well and once I finish my last 2 PT visits I will be considered done. He did say if I have any problems I can just send him a message. He was pleased in general with how I have healed and that no surgery is needed (me too!).
Today was another day to be out of our house for the housekeeper so we took Hobbes for a day at our favorite wineries. It was hot - 90F+ but not too bad relaxing in the shade.Tomorrow and Friday we have excessive heat warnings (over 100F) so no running for Hobbes but I will try to get something in.
