    COMPLETELY OFF-TOPIC HERE, BUT...

    Holidays are a LOT. And they cause a lot of stress - money, family, etc. And they can be pretty dark for people, too. Some people's mental health takes a big hit. So if ANY of you need to vent, reach out! If you have a friend who you suspect is struggling a bit, reach out!

    @JBanx256 - Great, great advice, and I don't think your post is off-topic at all!
    Mental health is always a part of our overall health and, yes, the holidays can cause a lot of stress. They also often cause overindulging, and interruptions to our daily routines. Thanks for the reminder to vent and reach out :)

    @JBanx256 I'm glad you posted that. I'm certainly in that category!

    @SparkSpringtime69 terrific idea to start the couch to 5K on the treadmill. Good luck with that. I tried brushing my teeth while standing on one leg, but I think I will just do my other little routine. I have trouble concentrating!!!

    @Happyness4me2 I think somebody mentioned that the ankle flexions were recommended for strengthening ankles. Chime in!

    This is what I'm doing, along with the calf raises and balance poses. I have been able to get the habit going by enlisting family members to watch me. I also have foot cramps and I think it helps prevent that.

    Ankle flexion (dorsiflexion)
    Sit on the floor with your legs stretched out in front of you.
    Secure the band around a chair leg or a table leg, and then wrap it around one foot.
    Slowly point your toes up toward you and then return to the starting position.
    Do 3 sets of 10 flexes on each foot, three days a week.

    On Saturday's run I did much better than Thursday's. Probably because it was the only exercise of the day.

    Week 1 best average pace: 13:47 1.83 miles

    I mapped out a big circle near my house, and it will be kind of fun to see how much farther I can get as the weeks go by. But I must remember, as they say, you will have some disappointing runs.

    Last night I walked the dogs for two and a half miles for the first time in days. Poor dogs. They have had some stimulation with grandchildren around the house.

    Today I went to circuit training. I was very pleased to feel that I had a spring in my step! I could do the jumping exercises well.
    Not so great on the platform, since I had trouble balancing while holding the stretch band up.

    I am not sure if the progress is from the C25K run or from the daily calf raises. I will take it.

    I can also stand on one leg and extend the other leg at an angle in front of me, holding onto the toe. I don't think I've been able to do that all year until now.

    Food choices weren't terrific yesterday but at least I did not snack, except for one candy cane!

    Non-scale victory is that I'm ending the year with a lot more exercise routine in place. With encouragement from you guys I have been able to do much more than I thought I would be able to do. Thanks!!!

    Sorry this is so long. It helps me to think about appreciating what I have and documenting the progress.

    @Happyness4me2 I agree, the additional food (primarily from carbs) is why my muscle mass appears to be less.

    @SparkSpringtime69 - thanks. If you search PIYO on youtube their are quite a few. Its a real dynamic, moving yoga-ish workout. I enjoy it because you get to hold poses but also work up a sweat. I really would love to get back into doing this 2x a week. ( after work double)

    Everyone - feel free to vent here !!! that is what we are here for. Getting it off of your thoughts and on virtual paper is SUCH a helper!

    Just chatting with a friend who hired a trainer for macro coaching for the year. He has been at 1.2g protein /# body weight for the past year. no cardio (maybe 30mins 1/wk) ... but gets his cardio in through lifting more weights. He has put on significant muscle and can lift SO much heavier than the year prior. Yet he weighs about the same.

    I'm getting VERY close to daily hitting 1g/#body weight. Its down to me choosing a PROTEIN for a snack, and ditching the carb snacks .... I know that just making that change could propel me to my weight goal and physique goal. Just would take 7-14 days of concentration on food.

    Daughter and I did our annual make gingerbread houses last night- I was doing SOOO good until this point. Then - got into that damn candy! Gesh.... UHHHHH.... I have to remember - Even though I like sweets, my body doesn't respond very well to them.

    I think my body is at least starting to adjust to the diet again - although there is some carb craving if I'm thinking about it, I'm not missing it when I'm eating or not hungry lol.

    Lots of life stuff + work related stuff (good, but extra stressors) + holidays + still feeling down about losing "my" place sometimes = sometimes feeling like I'm almost at the brink of a mini-meltdown. Haven't gotten to that point (yet lol), and my task list is at least keeping me focused each day so I'm not a complete scatter brain.

    Thankfully both pets seem to have settled in reasonably well. Dog still adjusting a bit, but she's been fine home alone a couple times now, so we're past the worst of it with her (rescue with semi mild separation anxiety that I've worked through with her, but there's always a tough call on when you can trust them - or not).

    @SherryRueter interesting about the macro coaching. I have the same impulse for carbs.

    @HoneyBadger302 I hear you. I wonder if the stress is causing me to make minor stupid mistakes.

    Walked the dogs for over an hour yesterday to relieve stress. Tried to practice my balance poses, but I just was not with it. Just have to keep plugging away

    Off to yoga, and breakfast with an old friend.

    Hi ladies. Yes, I went awol for some time again. I have no excuses, just life that got in the way.
    I'm still going to list some of the excuses though ... Work hit hard as my colleague of 13 years got sacked just like that. We started together and even if I didn't like her that much, it still hurts. Also because I need to cover her work now, "temporarily" they said. Second thing is that my usual physical therapist was in sick leave herself as she needed hip replacement. The new therapist and I didn't click terribly, I always got the impression that he wasn't inclined to go to the limit and I didn't progress as much as I should have. That kept me away from the gym also. The good news is that my usual PT is back since yesterday. Yes, I'm sore today from the hard work, it really is a big difference. So I renewed my fitness subscription again.
    And then the weather ! Boy, it is freezing here, as in biting arctic cold! As a result the diving went a bit on the backburner as well, but I'm going again on Thursday. My hands are already freezing from the thought alone.
    So yes, I have a plan: activity every day (walking, diving or PT/fitness combo and update my food log daily.
    And check in here of course !

    Welcome back Antiopelle. We all “disappear” every once in a while. I haven’t checked in in a while as I’m trying to hurry up unpacking while I’m back at my home. Heading back to parents at the end of the week and who knows when I’m back after that.

    Good news is that during my deload week I lost 4.2 pounds?! I don’t get it. Cortisol? Does that mean my ST program was stressing me? I’m being a dummy - today I was to start back lifting but afraid I’ll see the scale go up tomorrow. I’m using my unpacking as an excuse.

    Hope you’re all doing well. @JBanx256 - thanks for sharing that. Been such a rough year for so many folks. The good thing about unpacking now is it’s around the holidays so it’s making it (kinda) easier to give stuff away.

    How many tea sets does one need?! Make me feel better - anyone have any collection “vices”? Marie Kondo I’m not. More like Marie Can’t Do! 🤣🤣 (Lame joke as I sit hear staring at my weights….)😕

    I have a large Breyer model horse collection that started before I can remember (preschool) and still gets added to every now and then (rarely, but it happens). I refuse to get rid of them, a few were even my mother's growing up, so there's a lot of keepsake value too.

    Took le floof dog for a walk yesterday with my weighted vest, and we did a lot of obedience work - she did really well (for her) so that was fun! My knee, however, got MAD about that and completely blew up - sleep and a few drugs and supplement and it was down this morning, but this is getting annoying (I think its a prepateler bursitis (sp?) from the hours of crawling around on hard floors cleaning the old house.....doesn't hurt, but isn't giving up the ghost yet, either.

    @SherryRueter - my gym has Yogalates classes, I may try one out in January. I love gingerbread houses - how big do you make them?
    @HoneyBadger302 - I think it takes a while to adjust to living with someone. You can feel like you never have any private space though you had plenty when living on your own. I hope you're able to find ways to de-stress, especially now around the holidays. Glad to hear the pets are adjusting to the change.
    @zenobia9777 - hope you had a fun breakfast with your friend.
    @Antiopelle - Sorry to hear about the shake-up at your job! But happy for you that you have your usual PT therapist back, and that you've renewed your fitness commitment.
    @CeeBeeSlim - Congrats on the 4.2 pound loss, I hope it stays off for you even with today's lifting.
    I have a problem with books, both read and unread, school books and just general reading. I used to donate some to our library back in Jersey, but I don't know if our local library has book sales like that, I didn't see any "friends of the library" type thing on their website. I try to sell some when I can, but people don't seem to be as into buying books as they used to be.
    We have our final weigh-in/measurements tomorrow at the gym! I have an idea of what the weight loss might be, but I'm anxious to see the final measurements.
    In other news, I went to the doctor yesterday (general checkup) and got the blood work results back today - all numbers look good!! Potassium was just slightly over the high end of the range, not sure why, but if it's a problem the doctor will let me know. And I'm loving my new doctor, this was my first appt. with her.

    @Antiopelle good to hear from you. I think the hardest thing is having a plan in place.
    Sounds really upsetting about your colleague. Work environments are so dysfunctional.

    Congrats @CeeBeeSlim . That's a big weight loss. I'm also a Marie can't do!

    @HoneyBadger302 it hurts to even hear you describe the bursitis!!! Good luck with that.
    My dogs have some really bad habits and I wish I could get some tips. Sounds like you know all about it.


    @SparkSpringtime69 I share your book habit. I've passed a lot on over the years, but I still have many, many books that I need to deal with. I hope your weigh in goes well.

    I had a bad night last night, ate chocolate and drank too much wine. Upset.

    Yesterday's yoga was pretty good except the alternate instructor did a balance yoga flow that I was not really prepared for. Even though I've been practicing that. It just takes time.

    Today is another day for my balance, calf raises and ankle exercises.

    I made myself do the couch to 5K this morning. The Interval timer volume got knocked off, so I ran longer than I meant to. I really don't want to make it about rushing myself because I'm trying to improve my breathing, but I keep pushing myself to run.

    I'll be forced to be better about this next week when I go to a longer interval.

    I think I'm too focused on worrying about not making progress. I become too easily discouraged. Huge discipline exercise for me.

    Attitude issues! I was so sure I was going to start hurting because I had some sciatica at first, but I did not hurt at all once I got into it, after about 5 minutes.

    I have found that if I have a little sciatica, I can work it off as long as it has not gotten very inflamed. For example, if I've been on my feet for a long time and it's hurting, I would never try to do something like that. But starting off in the morning is not risking a problem.

    I can avoid the bad food today!

    @CeeBeeSlim congrats on the loss. I don't get how the scale works either, I lost 4lbs this past week also. Its definitely does defy my logical thinking. I chalk it up to muscle inflammation, as well as the food inflammation. It does make one smile and feel less bogged down by body size for a day or 2 though.

    @sparkspringtime69 Nice on the doctors report. I'm not sure if high potassium is any issue or not. but YAY!!! Gingerbread houses. We bought a kit from the discount store. We should have paid more for a better kit because we ended up going back to the dollar store to score candy to put on top of it.... (and half of the candy was eaten while decorating...whooops).

    @HoneyBadger302 I think I missed a post from you.... who are you living with? I know when our kids moved back in our house 18months ago, it was an adjustment for us all. Even the TV shows we chose to watch are impacted. While we have all adjusted and I adore having the kids back in the house, my hubby and I do miss it just being us 2. Thoughts and prayers as you continue to adjust.

    I tend to collect workout videos. I use to collect shot glasses as a pre-teen (never used them, I never got into drinking ever. Always thought it was a waste of money. I do love necklaces or bracelets but I don't have very many. Currently into Lipgloss & reading glasses (I keep losing track of things, so I just buy another one).

    @zenobia9777 : have you have your ear issue checked out? I have inner ear issues and no amount of exercise will increase my balance, so you might be doing something that will not pay off. Just be careful with that.

    @k8richly : I'm with you on the no cheese month. We had a ton of cheese in the house as we had a whole family coming over last weekend, but they had to skip last minute because the baby got sick. Guess who ate all the cheese? :cry:

    @SherryRueter: girlllll ... you are mighty strong! That video is showing some skill!

    @honeybadger302: you've been through a lot of changes lately, just give yourself some credit every now and then. Hopefully that knee will mend soon.

    @ceebeeslim: sometimes I miss the lockdowns, apart from the insecurities on so many levels, daily life was much simpler. AND I did declutter a lot during that time. Although hubbie stopped me every now and then, he is simply a hoarder. He has a shed full of tools that are never being used. But I'm sure if I was to give away one of them, of course he would need it the week after. That's how the universe works, right? :smiley:

    @JBanx256: that is so true, so much stress in December... I've cut down all parties except one - Christmas eve with my family at our place. All the rest: nothing. Some people - like my sisters - are a bit angry with me as we won't attend Christmas day or New Year, but so be it. I think one holiday in a week is more than enough. Just my way to stay sane at the year end.

    Started weighing and tracking my foods again this week to avoid some of the "creep" that I know has started to happen (extra splash of wine, generous portion of butter...). With the lower carb meals it's not hard to trim down for me, but those are still a few places that tend to creep if I'm not paying attention.

    @SherryRueter I moved in with my bf at his house. He was staying most of the time at my house since it was closer to his work, but I simply couldn't afford the place on my own after I lost my part time gig, and relying on p/t work to pay bills is not a place I like to be in - as it was it left me with NO spending money. He's been renovating his house slowly, and has a roommate who's been here, so now it's three of us plus the pets in a relatively small house. It's okay, but bf has a bunch of stuff, I have a fair bit of stuff, so it's a bit tight right now, plus we're basically moving bf into his own house as he had stuff piled all over and he was staying in a basement room, but got the main floors done just before move in...blah blah lol

    @zenobia9777 I grew up competing with my dogs mostly in 4H but dabbled in AKC a couple times with my sled team male husky. Competed through pretty high levels of obedience, then taught it for several years, and since then have dabbled in a few other dog-sports as well (agility, Schutzhund, K9 training as an assistant, etc). Add in some rescues (one in particular) who really expanded my experience, and I've done a fair bit - not all of it by any stretch though!

    I'm actually on a waiting list for my life-long dream puppy - a (mostly) Euro lines Doberman that I plan to compete with at some level (leaning towards Schutzhund/IPO), so he'll definitely keep me on my toes, but hoping to get him when my dog (fixed female, I think was a mom in a past life) can still help teach him doggie manners without it wearing her out too much and when she's young enough to still be okay with the rough-n-tumble play sometimes.

    @Antiopelle you mentioned that you've had many inner ear issues. I started to have some sinus pressure and then my left ear plugged. Its been that way for about 8 days. Any great tips for me? I've been taking sinus meds as well as doing some Neti-pot flushing. Nothing appears to make a difference.

    @honeybadger302 Okay, thank you for re-sharing. It does sound like tight quarters for the time being. Nice job on tracking your food. I've been doing that more consistently and I'm starting to feel better about it.


    I listened to a podcast about resisting urges yesterday.
    We are surrounded by urges all the time.
    * Run the yellow traffic light or to stop
    * Buy the "new sweater" or leave it in the store
    * Sit in the chair and watch more TV or tidy the kitchen
    * Yell "hello" to the friend across the street or stay quiet.

    While they don't' have anything to do with food, they do teach us that we resist urges all of the time.
    for example, you see a cute guy in the store. You don't just go up and pinch his rear end. You resist the urge to do anything more than look.

    The same should be done with Urges.
    Shut the urge down immediately and don't negotiate with it.
    Don't make deals with the inner voice.
    Just simply look at the food and say "NOPE". and go away.

    We will always have food temptations, urges if you will.
    Stopping the urge immediately will not only be gratifying but, it will keep you more on track with your goals.

    @SherryRueter Thanks for posting. Sooo true. When I bang my head against the wall trying to figure out how I lost the last 10 pounds so easily last year - the ones that are to be so hard to lose - esp at my age - the answer is right there. It coincided with Lent and I gave up sweets and processed food and stayed within my calorie limit. The weight melted off.

    Then I got cocky and lazy and that’s all she wrote.

    Glad to be reminded that it’s all in my own control
    .
    So far Damage Control December is on track! I’m determined not to enter the new year with the usual regret that I waaaaaay overdid it!

    Congrats @SherryRueter and @HoneyBadger302. I hope to report a loss sometime in the next few weeks!

    @SherryRueter those are good thoughts about urges. I have a real problem with impulse control.

    @Antiopelle I do have a history of inner ear issues. If I don't take Claritin regularly, I will get severe vertigo in the spring. I can remember a lot of earaches as a child and I wonder if my ears became damaged.

    But I still hold out hope because sometimes I have been able to improve my balance. it's just that I am so out of practice from so many years of other issues.

    Today in yoga I was able to do tree pose on one side. Warrior 3 is the pose that has improved the most. I am able to do that for 30 seconds or longer. Keeping up my evening exercises.

    C25K report. I did my run this morning and was better about controlling my breathing.
    I decided to save the urge for running fast until toward the end. I had a friend tell me you're supposed to do that on runs anyway.

    Food report... Yesterday was okay but maybe not a weight loss day.

    @HoneyBadger302 very exciting to think about getting a puppy! I would personally love to see pictures and or video. I don't know much about dog competitions, but I think it would be really fun to do agility with one of my dogs. She is very athletic. It is really interesting that you have all that experience.

    Today's workout was Back and Triceps. I've been working on increasing my 1 arm row weights feel sso empowering to pull a heavy weight and go DANG, I lifted XX. Leg day was Tuesday, and my legs are sore. Hamstrings are on the calendar for tomorrow.... or they are supposed to be. I may push that out a day and do something that's more total body tomorrow. I probably should do a yoga workout but, I probably won't.


    Sunny here finally. Great after NO sun for 9 days. only in the low 40's but, I will take that!

    @zenobia9777 Great Job on the evening exercises. You mentioned that you struggle(?) with impulse control. So, when you see a cute stranger, you just run up and pinch their rear end! :open_mouth: LO being reminded through the podcast I listened to (Burn fat with your brain, Maggie sterling) - Its HELPED me SOOO much the past 3 days. I just tell myself, Nope. and shut it down. She has a TON of great episodes. highly recommend listening.

    I didn't accomplish much yesterday, didn't even fill out my task list, but weather was YUCK, I was tired, and it was a bad combo. Kept my eating on track at least!

    Today the task list is spelled out, one thing crossed off, other on track, last one has to be after work - working on the house/getting my workout equipment out of my trailer and into the house - which I'm counting as exercise today since it involves heavy-ish lifting and hauling those things all the way down the hill into the back/basement door of the house and back up the hill for the next load!

    Work has been a little crazy with end of year stuff - doesn't help my company has a very limited PTO carry over, and the rest is "use it or lose it" so a lot of my most experienced guys are having to take a bunch of PTO before the end of the month, which is killing my projects (I'm not the only PM with that problem either). My manager/director is going to bring that up to the COO after the holidays to see if they can get that changed before next year.

    We had our final weigh/measure yesterday - over the eight weeks I lost 14.1 pounds and 9.5 inches. I'm the most excited that I lost 3.75 inches off my waist!
    @zenobia9777 - glad to hear your sciatica didn't hinder your run. Sounds like your yoga class is really helping you out with the balance. I've had 3 yoga classes so far and am loving them! I think it's really going to help with both my balance and flexibility (or, more accurately right now, my lack of both :D ).
    @SherryRueter - I'm not too worried about the potassium, everything else was fine and the doctor said she'd call if she had any concerns. Could have just been a bad result-I read that if you flex your muscles during the blood draw the potassium result could be higher.
    Who gets to eat the gingerbread house not that it's done??!
    Thanks for the post on urges, it makes a lot of sense.
    @HoneyBadger302 - I find that I always loose or maintain better when I track my food. I do especially well if I plan it out ahead of time, then just tweak during the day with any last minute changes.
    The puppy sounds like so much fun! How long is the wait?

    @SherryRueter - are your workouts upper body splits?

    @zenobia9777 I had a shudder when I read about the tree pose. I was the only one standing when everyone else in a yoga class started in tree pose and then slowly lowered one leg!😵‍💫. I was the only tree in the room. 😫 Humiliating!!

    @SherryRueter and @zenobia9777: my inner ear issue are not linked with sinuses, but with my vestibular system. It's called Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or BPPV. There are some exercises that I have done in the past, but they didn't seem to help. It just comes up and disappears again, and I cannot find a plausible cause-effect. My symptoms are also not completely within the BPPV realm, to make things easy.

    After having talked extensively with multiple specialists, as I have also an extreme form of motion sickness, the consensus was that not enough studies in that area have been done yet. Now, because of my motion sickness and my frequent diving, I take an antihistamine & scopolamine again seasickness almost two times a week, and this helps. When I'm not diving for some time, I'm more prone to get an episode of BPPV.

    The Maggie Sterling videos sound good. I need to try those.

    @HoneyBadger302 hauling around exercise equipment is definitely on my list for cardio.

    @SparkSpringtime69 that is incredible success in 8 weeks. Amazing weight loss and inches loss. Congratulations.

    @CeeBeeSlim I have been embarrassed many times in yoga classes, but it is silly because the skill levels are so variable. And nobody notices what you're doing because everybody is focused on trying to do the moves.

    @Antiopelle my doctor also tried to treat me for BPPV once using the maneuver that is supposed to reposition the crystals. I don't know if it did anything and he seemed to think it was a questionable cure. So I think I might have had it diagnosis of that also but not anywhere near as significant as yours. Not any fun to get motion sickness. I don't usually get that.

    Even if family members don't always like our visiting and entertaining choices, I hope they can respect our needs for sanity and calm!
    Somebody on this road was mentioning that conflict, and I am totally in sympathy with you

    Off to circuit training, and I'm going to work on my task list. I want to feel focused and calm before the company starts to arrive!

    @SparkSpringtime69 this is a major loss! Was it over a year or what period? Congratulations on the measurements! Amazing!

    @Antiopelle I would've assumed that deepsea diving would cause havoc on your inner ear but that's fascinating and great that it makes your condition better! But I'm sorry it's a hard ongoing issue that you need to deal with. I get just a bit dizzy sometimes from low blood sugar when i stand up and that is enough of a feeling of vertigo for me. I would hate to not feel balanced! @zenobia9777 good for you for continuing to work on it. Balance is kind of fundamental to our daily lives and not just fitness!

    @HoneyBadger302 - I ❤️ dogs! They are (or can be - ha!) so smart and work so hard to please, its very inspirational. I have a 6yr old chocolate lab and she's finally mellowed out and a great listener. We love going on runs together - it's a win-win. Training them must be so fulfilling (and a workout?)

    I'm a Marie-Kondo and my husband is a Marie-collect-everything. GRRR. I've advised him that before he is allowed to bring another Tshirt or coffee mug into the house, he must get rid of 2. Mostly he obeys. I can chuck house stuff out and he will never notice. I do this all the time but I am careful - I check with him if I think it will matter. I do collect books however. Its so hard to just get rid of them when I might want to reread them one day! We should all swap books.

    Re gingerbread houses, the secret is you buy the cheapest crappiest box set you can find, let your kids do the decorating and then tell them they can't touch it until Christmas eve or day. By then it is hard as a rock and tastes like drywall. Literally it is inedible! It is then so easy to just say "NOPE" à la Sherry. Problem solved! You're welcome 😆

    I've been successful in my no-cheese oath but otherwise it's been a hard month so far. I've fallen off my workout/nutrition regime almost completely. Too much work, sitting, stress, snacks, etc. It's all very unlike me. I know I need to snap out of it but I'm having a hard time. Work has pulled a fast one on me (changing my fricking work description without consultation!?) so I'm choosing to switch positions in January which is my way of keeping control and getting back at my big boss (good luck without me!) but making the decision and the change is nevertheless stressful. I know it will be hard on my employees and my wonderful manager who I'm leaving behind. I have 2 weeks off at Xmas and I will need it. I have hardly done any shopping or planning. Thankfully we aren't going anywhere.

    The admin details following my father's death are also stressing me out. I have no time to fill out all the darn paperwork and advise the banks, insurance etc! I have reserved the details for his celebration of life in February but it's all keeping me up at night.

    The good thing about me is that I always always know that everything is a phase. I've bounced back from worse low points and I just need to give myself grace right now. I will get through the holidays and the job change with maintenance and all will be just fine.

    Deep snow is falling right now and it is a beautiful calming sight on this dark cold morning. It's lovely to have this quiet time to myself before another crazy day begins. Have a great day friends.

    Just wanted to mention that the balancing move I talked about is called a single leg deadlift. We used two weights with it today.

    @ceebeeslim Yes, I concentrate one day on shoulders, one on bi/tri, one on Back, one on chest. (these vary of course, it could be chest and triceps). The current series I'm following has 2 lower body days....Hamstrings and Glutes / Calves and Quads.

    @zenobia9777 - I normally do Single Leg deadlifts using one weight and then the other arm on the back of the bench for stability. I would have to go much lighter if I used 2 weights. Going too heavy sometimes causes back issues for me.... its a thin thin thin line.
