Maybe I'll make something closer to a PAVlova it is real! You must google this possibility - named after a Russian ballerina. Sounds like a good beginning.1

I didn’t pay much attention to protein levels - or any levels initially. Cause I am a lifelong carnivore. But when I was restricting really hard, I was having hair loss and some muscle weakness. My doctor told me to eat more protein. So cheeses, eggs, lots of fish, meat, yogurt .... all measured. Solved the problem.
I find protein much more satiating than carbs or veggies. But I must curb the desire to dive into a lovely steak 🥩.2 -

Protein meringue cookies!!!! I think this might be a winner.
Going to start experimenting tomorrow. Egg whites, cream of tartar (15 calories worth to start), collagen supplement which includes cocoa powder and stevia. With the right combination this should equal some mighty fine HIGH protein cookies! And it should feel toooo heavy
Will report back.
That's an AWESOME idea! Now junk the stevia (uses fillers that have calories) and go with liquid sucralose drops!0 -
Laurie my implied comment was that 600 Cal out of 1200 assigned to protein did not appear to me to be a super viable option. Thus I was reassuring you that you would still be alive even if you take in "only" 75g That said, your cookies sound so good I will probably go ahead and make some once you figure out a recipe!!!1

You can buy meringue cookies. Some are low sugar too. Of course making your own with protein would be superior. There’s some advertised as healthy but a quick read of ingredients is needed.

I haven't looked at above but I thought the main issue was that sugar is an INTEGRAL part of making the cookie... i.e. you can't substitute with PAV like apple sauce or sucralose and nothingness. Hence I've never tried to.
Of course protein fluff was making the rounds a while back. and it looked good though I never had great luck with it. I recall protein powder and xanathan gum were in the game.
I admit to going for a "version" of dante's "pudding" yesterday.... just greek yogurt, all bran buds, walnuts since everyone was talking about them, cinnamon and liquid sucralose. Was actually quite ok. especially the portion I managed to leave for a few hours as opposed to having it right away. I admit to maybe a little bit of water to facilitate mixing as I didn't have milk handy.2 -

The collagen supplement already has stevia type sweetener and cocoa powder...so I"m kinda stuck with that. I picked up the egg whites and cream of tartar this afternoon....macaroons tomorrow!!!! (they have to wait till tomorrow because my grocery store visit resulted in the purchase of one of those little apple pies. Not a terrible thing - but there went 300 calories with with only 3g of protein.)2 -
Just came across a reference to this article out in the open MFP community....sorry, got so excited I lost the thread. But this is very interesting. In a nutshell - a sense of satiation comes as much from our expectations as from the actual consumed food.

Cross your fingers for those meringue/PAVlova delights they are baking now. This is the part that might kill you, PAV. It seems like it is at least an hour baking time. We'll see. I don't have one of those fancy tipped icing bags and my cookie sheet is smaller than ideal - and I am using a small convection oven so that isn't getting any bigger. They look pretty dubious at this stage1

They aren't too bad... Probably be much better if I make them smaller.1

Could maybe use a bit more sweetener.... I'm hoping if I eat it with a clementine it'll be fine 😁
I posted a picture of the ingredients.
I mixed all the dry stuff together and in a separate bowl I whipped the egg whites until they were nice and stiff... I posted that picture to show how stiff they were they didn't drop off of the egg beaters. Several places I read that you could not use the egg whites from a carton but that's what I used and they were fine.
Once the egg whites were nice and stiff I folded all the dry stuff into that mix until it was pretty well combined but it was starting to become more fluid the more I stirred it so I stopped when it looked like it does in that picture.
At this stage in the ideal world you would put it in one of those bags and make nice little star shaped cookies on the cookie sheet. I just spooned it on.
I cooked it on low... About 250°... For about an hour. Could have maybe used longer? These are drying crispy on the outside a little bit chewy / marshmallowy on the inside. I don't mind them the way they are1 -
Update:
I've eaten half. Couldn't stomach more. Too ??? eggy??? But I'm weird with eggs so that might just be my problem. Not sure I will make them again.
But - there is some potential here I think. Perhaps with more sweetener, and smaller, prettier, bite size shape these would be a good very high protein snack. Don't think I could eat all 200 calories worth in one go though - which is odd. So it score a billion on the filling/satiating score sheet.2 -
Billion is good!!!! The walnut all bran yogurt is good for taste. But out for calories. The walnuts add up. Fast.
Made two buckets of potato egg salad. For today and future.
700g red potatoes, 908g 0% Greek, 160g white onion, 120g picked turnips, 70g picked banana peppers, 12g lemon pepper, 12g mustard powder, 333g pickled eggs.
Dice, slice, stir, mix! 🤪2 -
That sounds pretty good, PAV. Where do you get the pickled turnip?0
-
pickled eggs obviously could be normal eggs--tried to find butternut squash for the girl at the canadian warehouse club... 5th visit with no squash. They have a lot of "weird" pickles there! Got the turnip ones there. But I've also seen smaller jars. Not sure if Superstore or Walmart or both.1
-
Didn't even occur to me that I could buy them in a store! Thought they just magically appeared at falafel places1
-
Walmarts in hamilton centre and stoney creek list both Arz and Zein in 1L jar for $4.99. I've used Arz before and had no issues.0
-
Thank you

today's pickles were "tamam" brand and I did like them better than the ARZ for whatever that's worth
The potato egg salad remains a good value, I think. And is high in protein and (relatively) satiating carbs. I do leave the skin on the potatoes which is probably against some rule or another. Don't forget that a bunch of items pretend to be less calories than they are... looking at you zero-not calorie mustard powder and even the pickled eggs claiming to be less Cal than regular boiled eggs when they don't seem to have much or any liquid absorbed. I initially thought it would be half today and half tomorrow, but I think that thirds or quarters are more likely. Have some greens and tomatoes to add too to turn into a salad...

I haven't made this in awhile. So the "calories" in the box would be multiplied by 5.5 or so for a filling serving? That isn't bad at all!!!!

I do have it in my recipes as "PAVs Potato Salad"0
-
As i wrote to @Athijade .... mix the mustard powder in the yogurt before applying to the rest. Mine is quite unevenly distributed. Also should have cut the turnip pieces a bit smaller. They add a nice color but are a bit too chunky the way I did them. Lemon pepper was a medium choice in the combination. That said the basic idea I think works.... it's just adding various pickles to the yogurt mustard egg "dressing" for the potatoes. Calories seem to be about equal between the potatoes, the eggs, and the yogurt and just over or under 500 per.
Biggest issue I see is how to serve in a way that doesn't encourage too many bread/cracker/etc digressions. I've even gone with adding it over lettuce/leaves and tomato!
But hey, that's where the fun part of experimenting comes in! I did consider adding olives for some fat since I'm using 0% greek. The whole 2.3kg batch was under 1800 Cal. Would definitely jiggle a bit with mustard and sriracha or dried chilli as opposed to lemon pepper. and mix it in the yogurt so that it is more even before applying.

Hit a bit of a milestone today. I am down 100 lbs from my starting weight in January of 2022 and I am once again down over 300 lbs from my highest weight ever in 2004. After losing 340 lbs in 2004 - 2006 I managed to keep most of it off for 5 or 6 years. I never gained it all back, but did manage to get to 400 lbs briefly. Boy, what a waste of that work. Anyway, I feel good and on the right track. 40 more lbs to go,

Congratulations, CharlesScott! A bit of a rollercoaster ride - but think of all the learning along the way. Not necessarily a waste - because us humans can be really slow to absorb lessons. I hope you are able to stay at or near goal for the rest of your years.
I have a similar rollercoaster picture from the last 3 or so years. Some days it hurts to look at it, others I feel really proud for not giving up. Live and learn and live even better!3 -
After being hit by protein awareness I've managed several great protein days - within my current calorie envelope. Woohoo! But. Last night I noticed how low my fat number had dropped...16% or so...25ish grams. After a bit of looking around that seems too low. Most resources suggest .5g or .1g per kg of body weight/lean body mass - whichever is correct I'm way under with my new daily menus.
I realized that is because to meet the calorie requirments with the extra protein I cut out nuts and seeds - walnuts on my yogurt, pumpkin seeds on green stuff - because they are high calories without any immediate sense of satiation. I didn't even notice and didn't think of it - until I played PAVs post in my mind about numbers and remembered that he mentioned fat requirements (though I don't think you were certain on the exact number, PAV, you lodged that category in my mind).
So my next goal is to get the fat numbers up a bit on the "good" days without disturbing the calorie goal. Since I hope those will be by far the majority of my days.
On the days I breakdown and eat a little pie or chocolate bar fat isn't an issue though protein probably will be ... but they will be the exception, not the rule.1
