@ashleycarole86 - Thursday, January 4th - 0 steps (forgot my watch)
Friday, January 5th - 6,789 steps - 1 hour of CrossFit
Saturday, January 6th - 30 minutes of CrossFit and 1 hour of spin
Sunday, January 7th - 3,472 steps - it snowed, and I don't like the snow, so these steps are all from indoor chores.
Today is beautiful because the ground is covered with snow, but it is also cold and blustery. I do appreciate looking at the snow from inside a warm and cozy shelter.
@jugar - thank you for reminding me (all of us) that cutting sugar and processed carbs out of the diet can impact mood so significantly. I honestly had been in this funk for a while and thought it was just because of the time of year coupled with the loss of our friend. But, I am starting to think it might have more to do with the increase in sugar and bad food choices during that time. Either way, my mood has increased significantly and I am hoping to keep it up.
Something that was weighing on my mind and not helping last week is that we were told that the house we are living in (renting) is being sold this year by September. Great part is we have several months to figure out what we want to do. Also great is that we are in a position where we can buy. But, last week, all I could think about was the stress around all of it instead of the opportunities house hunting can provide.
@Kali225 - GO PACK GO! That was a great game! And, 10 consecutive wins against the Bears, can't complain about that!9 -

Ah, January so far is really weird
One of my coworkers who I became quite friendly with is leaving us. She is moving away to another city on the other side of UK. I am really sorry, I will sound like horrible person, but I am sooooo glad.
She is lovely and we have a laugh together but she is also a drinker. She drinks 2 bottles of wine every night. I can always tell when she had a session the night before. What is worst she always encourages me to drink like it is something normal. I drive - she doesn't. I never drink alcohol the night before I have to drive early in the morning. I live in the countryside, almost middle of nowhere so if I lost my licence I would really be finished. We only have one bus a day, not mentioning accidents and killing someone I might have a couple of glasses of wine the night before if I work in the afternoon the next day.
Lately she's on my case all the time:"Have a drink,hun You deserve it. We've had a long day" "I hope you are drinking?I am. Send me a photo of what you are drinking" and it is non stop silly things like that. When I say stearnly that I don't drink, she'll calm down and start again. Drives me nuts. Sometimes I'll just agree with her and say yes, I am drinking just to keep her quiet
But also the problem is that when she keeps going on about it it makes me crave alcohol. And I won't lie to you Friday and Saturday night I will have a bottle of wine (each night 1 bottle) because I don't have to drive in the morning, my husband takes me to work. Not every weekend but most I struggled with alcohol 2 years ago and I am worried that it will happen again.
Her last day is Wednesday, I am sad but also relieved. I know it is me, my will power and she is not making me drink - but she is not helping situation because she knows I've had a problem.
There - I got some things of my chest and please don't think I am horrible person and I am not sticking my head in the sand
I just have to deal with it now and stop drinking completely
CW 235lbs9 -
@strong_fit_ells - you are absolutely not a horrible person! Your ability to deal with this kind of presence in your life and only have a bottle or two of wine on the weekends is inspiring. I wouldn't be able to do that. I'm glad that she is leaving because it will make it easier for you, but understand and feel for you that your friend is moving.5

LAST CALL!
All weigh-ins for this week must be in by 10 hours from now. Don't forget!
@coraliesara9089
@leni1us
@Pearl4686
Thanks!
I'm going to have to sit out January and February. I can't seem to get it together and post my weight in a timely manner. Alot is going on medically right now with my 96 year old dad AND my husband. I would like to still be part of the team but I'll plan to come back in March. I will still jump on
when I can. Sorry team.
No problem! Life happens and you'll be back when you can. Hugs to you1 -
@adrimango the solo beach trip sounds fabulous and even the solo 5 hour drive a good time to catch up on music/podcasts/silence. Love me a roadtrip.
@jugar what a beautiful quiet scene in the snow. Glad you were able to get out later with the shoes. Just a dusting here really and potentially 2 in of rain coming soon to wash it all away. and @ashleycarole86 a nice mini escape for you and Brad too..with snowshoes!
@Kali225 I had googled top of foot pain last week and that's exactly what came up. Thank you for passing along the sneaker recommendation - ordering tonight as I needed new sneaks anyhow. like @micki48, I need some good shoes too. One site I saw talked about icing 4 times a day not really a fan at this time of year. I'll start with the footwear. The pain/limping is really a PIA and inconsistent.
@leni1us good luck and strength to you - from a former caregiver - there's a lot to juggle.
@strong_fit_ells It certainly won't hurt to have that constant niggling removed. Lots of us here taking a break from the alcohol too.
@MaddawgMadsen just getting through a funk and then faced with house hunting - but you turned it around and mention the opportunities of a house hunt...I'm impressed with the conscious reframing of what is, for most, a daunting task...and like you said, good that you have time ahead to sort it out.
I've had some 'wins' and 'losses' and learning experiences this past week. With no internet, went to bed early, didn't snack around. With just one evening of it back, watched one program while sorting thru a big drawer of socks; a second program, with no task to accompany it, I went looking for a snack - completely thought I could just limit to one portion, but no. So, lesson is to try to have a task to do while watching a program. A win was going to a memorial service & reception and not letting a huge table of amazing looking desserts or big white bread subs tempt me...had a cut up apple and almonds in the car waiting for me and had those on the ride home instead.
My calorie setting is quite low (1200) so I'm not too upset with myself if I go over a hundred or so calories...I know that I'm still going in the right direction. I do make sure that I eat right up TO the 1200 on all days, (assuming I don't go over) and am back to using a scale to build a bowl/meal/salad, measuring everything...I want to guarantee that I'm not missing out on any calories (medium banana, etc.. is a bit subjective). I feel like having every little morsel is important or I might set myself up for a binge later because I'm hungry. Also have heard that eating too little can cause your body to halt losing because it's preserving energy. Thoughts on that? is that true?
My new boss and I are getting along fine, it's all going to work out. Happy to report that my stress level is very low at the moment, can focus on this healthy eating task at hand. Contacted the recreation center about signing up - they sent me a link to a site to sign up that wants to have unlimited access to all my info ....grrr....I hate all that - will see if they'll just accept a check from me for the year (it's only $5/month for town employees) Okay, must go buy some new sneakers - get onto Fiton in the coming week and get busy.

Well note to myself. Go to gym on nice days instead of procrastinating. I had planned to start this weekend but said nah ill just start Monday. Well, while I'm getting my gym clothes on I'm dreading my first day more due to the weather. Extreme cold and rain. Next time I won't procrastinate so I can skip days that's really rough weather. But I'm determined to go today as the start of day1!6

@Kali225 and @eggfreak My podiatrist recommended the exact same inserts. I have found that the sneakers have enough support on their own. I haven’t used the inserts in them. I will say I have found that in one pair of shoes I feel like I’m slipping out of my shoes with the inserts in. I have mostly worn my sneakers. I don’t enjoy not being able to wear cute shoes, but having my feet screaming is worse.
@jugar Love the beautiful photo. How peaceful to be able to go walking there. Lucky you. And Brad and Ashley what a fun adventure you had.
So I’ve logged my food. I’m just about to my step goal but my big win was doing Pilates after I came home from school. I took the suggestion made here to reframe it not as something I have to do but rather something I get to do. It’s a reward for working hard all day. It worked! I got on my mat. Yay! Thanks for the advice.
We are looking at big rain tomorrow with strong wind gusts. Hope everything goes ok getting to and from school.
On the football front - congratulations to those of you with winning teams. Our Birds are in the playoffs, but Wew lately it’s been real bad. Good luck everyone.

Also have heard that eating too little can cause your body to halt losing because it's preserving energy. Thoughts on that? is that true?
The eating too little question reminds me of the 'cellist I played with for more than 30 years. We were discussing sound colours and textures, and he made the best demonstration of how to find the limit between a big full sound and one that is ugly. So easy with a bow! He played an open string with normal pressure, then added a bit more pressure each time, until the note became loud, then intense, then rough, then seriously gritty. He said if you don't go all the way to ugly and horrible you don't find that fine border between something that works and something that doesn't. I think we find those lines with our calorie settings. If we eat too little, it is true that our body goes into a panic and makes it easy to jump on every crumb and eat all the things. We feel around for the place where we are losing slowly enough not to cause mayhem. I know I have crossed the line when I'm hungry just about all the time, and/or I'm cold a lot. I hit that yesterday, and today ate an astonishing helping of nuts and dried fruits to try to get back to normal. I'll head back to the good side of the line tomorrow. I doubt that any of us gets so far into hunger that we go into that starvation mode where we are lethargic, cold, and seriously conserving calories. Hopefully!
I am like you - set it at 1200 to be able to be a bit loosey goosey. When I feel that little body panic coming on, I up it a bit. While I was losing, the plateaus were very important. You can't go on losing constantly, especially once you're closer to your goal range. Let the body get used to the new normal and then get back at it - find that border and stay just on the losing but still feeling good side. Good hunger before every meal is great - important even. Constant hunger not so much.
Enough going on for tonight! Thanks for the question - it is always an interesting one trying to figure out the boundaries.

EEEK! It was just brought to my attention that I made a mistake in the tallies!
It was @eggfreak that should have the 3rd place for last week - she and @Gidgitgoescrzy were apart by .03% but I put them in the wrong order! Both amazing losses for the week but officially, @eggfreak was 3rd. WTG!6 -
My facilitation went well today. I came home and did some post work while walking on my treadmill to get in some steps. Lots of water, no soda, and 2 meals without processed carbs! @MaddawgMadsen how did your day go? @eggfreak or anyone have any podcast suggestions to me in the frame of mind to set some inspiring goals for the year? Or an audio book?5

@adrimango have fun at the beach! I LOVE the beach and it is awesome you go for a few days by yourself.
@micki48 we are having some wind and rain tomorrow too. I hope we don't lose power!
@strong_fit_ells it does sound like a good thing your coworker is moving away. It's hard to stay on track when someone is always offering or asking about food/drink that isn't part of your plan.
I am very curious to see what my weight will be tomorrow. Had a semi-decent week eating, but by no means perfect. I only weigh myself once a week so I don't know any numbers since last week.
I will say that this step challenge for the weekly challenge (for the whole group) has gotten me moving more! I went to the gym early before my body pump class and walked for about 45 minutes.🚶🏼♀️I don't want to let my partner down!7 -
@lauren_989 You're spot on about the challenge this week - having a partner is a great way to make us get out there and hold up our end.
You already reminded yourself about tomorrow's weigh-in, so I don't need to do that!
We have one remaining weigh-in from today, and it comes with a question:
@cleaneater80 do you want to stick with Mondays? Let me know if you'd like to change days.
Thanks!2 -
@StayFITTer
Hey, you bet - it's steps + minutes of intentional exercise. I convert those exercise minutes into step equivalents for you.
Use your best estimate if you feel your activity was fully captured by your watch. For example, no need to count walks as those are steps and no additional conversion is given for that. But, for most other activities, there will be a supplement added for those minutes.
This is a self-guided challenge, and some people only ever give me steps, and that's okay too. But, if you're doing a lot of other exercises that don't count as steps on your watch, get those minutes in!
Also, if you have a target per day, let me know, and I'll track how many days a week you hit it. I target 10K so whether I step 10K or step 5K and bike 5K equivalent, I make it!
@strong_fit_ells
No problem at all, see you in week 2 Thanks for the heads up

Our plan was set for today and then it changed. We picked up Morgan (our dog) from our old trailer neighbors that love to look after her from time to time after work today and they had dinner almost ready and invited us in to join them unexpectedly..
The meal itself wasn't unhealthy - lots of veg, pork tenderloin, potatoes... but it did mean I didn't get my Peloton ride. And I have a corporate event tomorrow night to see the Calgary Flames game and it's dinner out and the box suite and yeah.. it's the opposite of a healthy night in. Anyway, tonight was lovely, they are people we love to have in our lives and I'll take the time together anytime. BUT, my weight is super inflated after this weekend and it was a diversion from plans that would work on that.
One thing about me is that being an "all or nothing" thinker (something I'm working on) means that sometimes when a plan changes I throw in the towel and say to hell with it and that's when I come home and drink a half a bottle of wine and eat a row of chocolates and so on. But I am trying to just leave the past behind, approach each moment as a time to make a choice, and move on. And so I came home, drank a big glass of water, and came on here to read about all the great choices and challenges you all shared.7 -
another late check in - my time of the month hit HARD this afternoon, and I was sooo tired and hungry at work as the day ended. I basically got right into bed when I got home. I did rally for yoga and some dinner but I also had a whole bunch of snacks. so it goes!
@eggfreak I started with just the shoes, and I was still having the pain so then we added the inserts (which completely REPLACE the soles that the shoes come with - I don't think your foot would fit if you just slip the inserts in on top of the soles). I also have a pretty low arch in my foot so that could be contributing. Another avenue I found on the internet that I actually do think made a difference was lacing my shoes differently! The standard style and how your shoes come laced puts pressure at the "criss-cross" point which is right over the extensor tendon. So now I do something called straight-bar lacing, which eliminates that point of pressure - this site can show you how to re-lace! : https://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/straightbarlacing.htm
The downside is that your foot can feel a little less secure in the heel but I certainly am not back to the point of jogging so for my regular walks, trying to lessen the tightness and pain is way more important that maybe my foot coming up a bit more in the shoe. Note, for the Brooks Addictions, I think there is an odd number of eyelets so you need to use the 2nd tab on that lacing website and it does end up looking a little lopsided. But it did help me! I will probably re-lace my shoes for the rest of time.
to your question on calories, at this point I personally think that MFP gives most people a daily goal that is too low. I think back in 2014, when I first downloaded the app, it gave me 1260 and that's what I tried to follow. But it really isn't realistic for a 19 year old walking to class and staying up late to eat that little food in a day, so ultimately, I do actually blame MFP a bit for the restrict-binge cycle that led me to disordered eating in the last 10 years (eeek!) - because that "1260" number is what started the restriction, even if I didn't know that that was what it was at the time! Like Liselyn said too, that 1200 goal shouldn't be the goal in perpetuity. I think @ashleycarole86 had a lot of success with planned maintenance weeks where she would up her calories to intentionally plateau and let the body reset (?). With mainly tracking protein now myself instead of calories, I think I am eating way above whatever MFP would tell me to eat, but I am definitely still losing weight (granted, with medication that has an appetite suppressant!) - sometimes, more is more, if it is quality foods (high protein or high fiber, good fats, etc).
Love that we have Packers, Ravens, Eagles, and Bills fans in the chat! So pumped for the playoffs.
@strong_fit_ells I think your feeling of relief is fair! friends at work are so important but sounds like her influence may have been more negative overall... perhaps it will be a better friendship with some distance!
okay off to dreamland for me.
5 -
@strong_fit_ells you are justified in your feelings. Friends are encouraging. Or they should be anyway.
Long day. Work ran late. My scales said I lost 3 pounds since yesterday. They have lost their gears. Night
3 -
@strong_fit_ells - Sometimes relationships and friendships run their course, especially if your goals no longer align, and that’s 100% okay. You’re not a horrible person for feeling the way you do about your coworker leaving.
@jugar - I love your analogy! It’s very true. Now with PCOS, my calorie deficit has changed slightly since before when I was on the pill. My dietitian and I are still modifying and tweaking to find the right goal for me. What worked for me 7 years ago to lose 35lbs in one year may not work for me again.
Well, yesterday I did not get my workout in. It’s okay though, I feel motivated this morning to do some movement, so after breakfast, I will do a strength workout. I am working from home today because we have a contractor coming by, and it’s another very busy day of meetings for me, but at least no commute to worry about.4 -
Good Morning, all is well here. I took yesterday off from exercise. I know myself well enough to know, I will go overboard and fizzle out. So I need to incorporate rest days. I did do a little yoga though.
It's a busy time for me this month, I have to do all the year end stuff, 1099s, 1098s, w2s and on and on and on.5
