My facilitation went well today. I came home and did some post work while walking on my treadmill to get in some steps. Lots of water, no soda, and 2 meals without processed carbs! @MaddawgMadsen how did your day go? @eggfreak or anyone have any podcast suggestions to me in the frame of mind to set some inspiring goals for the year? Or an audio book?5

@adrimango have fun at the beach! I LOVE the beach and it is awesome you go for a few days by yourself.
@micki48 we are having some wind and rain tomorrow too. I hope we don't lose power!
@strong_fit_ells it does sound like a good thing your coworker is moving away. It's hard to stay on track when someone is always offering or asking about food/drink that isn't part of your plan.
I am very curious to see what my weight will be tomorrow. Had a semi-decent week eating, but by no means perfect. I only weigh myself once a week so I don't know any numbers since last week.
I will say that this step challenge for the weekly challenge (for the whole group) has gotten me moving more! I went to the gym early before my body pump class and walked for about 45 minutes.🚶🏼♀️I don't want to let my partner down!7 -
@lauren_989 You're spot on about the challenge this week - having a partner is a great way to make us get out there and hold up our end.
You already reminded yourself about tomorrow's weigh-in, so I don't need to do that!
We have one remaining weigh-in from today, and it comes with a question:
@cleaneater80 do you want to stick with Mondays? Let me know if you'd like to change days.
Thanks!2 -
@StayFITTer
Hey, you bet - it's steps + minutes of intentional exercise. I convert those exercise minutes into step equivalents for you.
Use your best estimate if you feel your activity was fully captured by your watch. For example, no need to count walks as those are steps and no additional conversion is given for that. But, for most other activities, there will be a supplement added for those minutes.
This is a self-guided challenge, and some people only ever give me steps, and that's okay too. But, if you're doing a lot of other exercises that don't count as steps on your watch, get those minutes in!
Also, if you have a target per day, let me know, and I'll track how many days a week you hit it. I target 10K so whether I step 10K or step 5K and bike 5K equivalent, I make it!
@strong_fit_ells
No problem at all, see you in week 2 Thanks for the heads up

WOW! Love all the energy for everyone getting their week 1 step challenge counts into me!
Here are mine:
Dec 31 - 5599 steps
Jan 1 - 7798 steps + 32 minutes Peloton
Jan 2 - 12676 steps + 32 minutes Peloton
Jan 3 - 14626 steps
Jan 4 - 10993 steps + 34 minutes Peloton
Jan 5 - 15485 steps
Jan 6 - 3711 steps5 -
Our plan was set for today and then it changed. We picked up Morgan (our dog) from our old trailer neighbors that love to look after her from time to time after work today and they had dinner almost ready and invited us in to join them unexpectedly..
The meal itself wasn't unhealthy - lots of veg, pork tenderloin, potatoes... but it did mean I didn't get my Peloton ride. And I have a corporate event tomorrow night to see the Calgary Flames game and it's dinner out and the box suite and yeah.. it's the opposite of a healthy night in. Anyway, tonight was lovely, they are people we love to have in our lives and I'll take the time together anytime. BUT, my weight is super inflated after this weekend and it was a diversion from plans that would work on that.
One thing about me is that being an "all or nothing" thinker (something I'm working on) means that sometimes when a plan changes I throw in the towel and say to hell with it and that's when I come home and drink a half a bottle of wine and eat a row of chocolates and so on. But I am trying to just leave the past behind, approach each moment as a time to make a choice, and move on. And so I came home, drank a big glass of water, and came on here to read about all the great choices and challenges you all shared.7 -
another late check in - my time of the month hit HARD this afternoon, and I was sooo tired and hungry at work as the day ended. I basically got right into bed when I got home. I did rally for yoga and some dinner but I also had a whole bunch of snacks. so it goes!
@eggfreak I started with just the shoes, and I was still having the pain so then we added the inserts (which completely REPLACE the soles that the shoes come with - I don't think your foot would fit if you just slip the inserts in on top of the soles). I also have a pretty low arch in my foot so that could be contributing. Another avenue I found on the internet that I actually do think made a difference was lacing my shoes differently! The standard style and how your shoes come laced puts pressure at the "criss-cross" point which is right over the extensor tendon. So now I do something called straight-bar lacing, which eliminates that point of pressure - this site can show you how to re-lace! : https://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/straightbarlacing.htm
The downside is that your foot can feel a little less secure in the heel but I certainly am not back to the point of jogging so for my regular walks, trying to lessen the tightness and pain is way more important that maybe my foot coming up a bit more in the shoe. Note, for the Brooks Addictions, I think there is an odd number of eyelets so you need to use the 2nd tab on that lacing website and it does end up looking a little lopsided. But it did help me! I will probably re-lace my shoes for the rest of time.
to your question on calories, at this point I personally think that MFP gives most people a daily goal that is too low. I think back in 2014, when I first downloaded the app, it gave me 1260 and that's what I tried to follow. But it really isn't realistic for a 19 year old walking to class and staying up late to eat that little food in a day, so ultimately, I do actually blame MFP a bit for the restrict-binge cycle that led me to disordered eating in the last 10 years (eeek!) - because that "1260" number is what started the restriction, even if I didn't know that that was what it was at the time! Like Liselyn said too, that 1200 goal shouldn't be the goal in perpetuity. I think @ashleycarole86 had a lot of success with planned maintenance weeks where she would up her calories to intentionally plateau and let the body reset (?). With mainly tracking protein now myself instead of calories, I think I am eating way above whatever MFP would tell me to eat, but I am definitely still losing weight (granted, with medication that has an appetite suppressant!) - sometimes, more is more, if it is quality foods (high protein or high fiber, good fats, etc).
Love that we have Packers, Ravens, Eagles, and Bills fans in the chat! So pumped for the playoffs.
@strong_fit_ells I think your feeling of relief is fair! friends at work are so important but sounds like her influence may have been more negative overall... perhaps it will be a better friendship with some distance!
okay off to dreamland for me.

@strong_fit_ells you are justified in your feelings. Friends are encouraging. Or they should be anyway.
Long day. Work ran late. My scales said I lost 3 pounds since yesterday. They have lost their gears. Night
3 -
@strong_fit_ells - Sometimes relationships and friendships run their course, especially if your goals no longer align, and that’s 100% okay. You’re not a horrible person for feeling the way you do about your coworker leaving.
@jugar - I love your analogy! It’s very true. Now with PCOS, my calorie deficit has changed slightly since before when I was on the pill. My dietitian and I are still modifying and tweaking to find the right goal for me. What worked for me 7 years ago to lose 35lbs in one year may not work for me again.
Well, yesterday I did not get my workout in. It’s okay though, I feel motivated this morning to do some movement, so after breakfast, I will do a strength workout. I am working from home today because we have a contractor coming by, and it’s another very busy day of meetings for me, but at least no commute to worry about.4 -
Good Morning, all is well here. I took yesterday off from exercise. I know myself well enough to know, I will go overboard and fizzle out. So I need to incorporate rest days. I did do a little yoga though.
It's a busy time for me this month, I have to do all the year end stuff, 1099s, 1098s, w2s and on and on and on.5 -

I will take it! After last weeks water and food weight whoosh, I am still down some! I just need to rein in my food intake. I am still below maintenance but not in as much of a deficit that I would like. And I did cave and eat a crumbl cookie. And 1 cookie isn't like 200 calories, no...it's like 800 calories. I did savor it over 3 days though.
I am feeling positive this week and the increased steps is making me want to eat better!6 -
@ashleycarole86 - 4,812 steps - 2 hours of bowling league (3 games) - getting my steps in has been hard with all the snow and ice on the ground. I have not been doing my daily walks.
@adrimango - I've been doing well with the no processed carbs. I'm gluten intolerant, so pastas and breads are already a treat because of how expensive they are. The toughest parts for me have been no alcohol (especially when my husband keeps saying how good beer will taste in certain situations), and no sweets. I was craving sugar BAD over the weekend and ended up eating five bananas. I don't even like bananas, but they were the most amazing thing this weekend. I am glad to hear that yesterday went well! I especially love that you were able to fit some extra steps in on your treadmill! Keep it up today. You got this!
@jugar - That was a great analogy about the weight and calories. I too have my calories set to 1,200. However, there are many days I know I need more food and I let myself eat it. I am just getting back to calorie counting after taking mid-November through now off. Usually I try my best to listen to my body and not my anxiety about going above my limit, but I also track. It's a trust but verify mentality. If my body is telling me I need more food, I will give it more (quality) food, but I will do my best to track every calorie. If I am daily eating a couple hundred more calories than my limit, I will adjust the limit.
A friend of mine posted this on her Facebook page: I want advice. Not about any specific thing, just advice. What is the best advice you can give. ... so, that is my question to everyone on here. What is one piece of advice you can give?
Here is mine: if you need to use both chapstick and hand lotion, use the chapstick first.7 -
Good evening Waistaways!
First of all thank you for your lovely comments and making me feel better about myself regarding my friend
Today was a good day. I thicked all the boxes in my habbit tracker but the best news is I have a new friend
Look at her! Cutness overload! Maxi is a half husky and she is 2 weeks old. She will be joining my family in about 6 weeks time! I cannot wait
Have a lovely evening everyone
9 -
@strong_fit_ells - Maxi is ADORABLE!1
-
@strong_fit_ells
Oh the joy of a new puppy joining the family. Congrats. 6 weeks won't come quickly enough!
Course at work done. Snack on break was cheese and veg and such at least so that's better than the candy from last time.
Off to dinner and the Flames game I go!7 -
Goodness! Lots of it! And cuteness - that puppy is so sweet @strong_fit_ells She will be driving you crazy in no time
My silly horse was a such a good boy today. We found a great exercise that he understood really well and will help him develop his back muscles. Then he helped me clean up the arena and put away the poles. He loves those jobs. His reward is cut up carrots served one at a time in a way that he has to stretch his neck to the sides, down and back, and in all the ways that gives him a good stretch. He knows to stand still and just stretch to get them, and it is a good game. I did a lot of both posting and sitting trot, so my core and legs are feeling well worked too. I got spaghetti squash with eggplant, tofu, kale, and fresh tomato sauce and I didn't even have to stretch my neck to eat it. I had to do my Pilates beforehand though - no dinner until that happens!
Speaking of which, I hope you are able to fit in those Pilates sessions @micki48 - I know you love them, and I thank you every day for introducing me to Robin Long's site.
Enjoy the enjoyables, everyone! (that's my advice for today @MaddawgMadsen )4 -

oh my good god @strong_fit_ells I am absolutely losing it over the puppy pic
Solid day for me here - I was again hit by intense exhaustion and hunger as I left work, almost completely fell asleep on the train home. But I made my protein drink when I got home and allowed myself a snack bag of cheezits before swinging into yoga and a dance cardio session with my friend over zoom. It was great to be dancing again! I took a break from it during the workout challenge I did in the fall.
Just finished dinner. Have to hop in a shower and get to bed.5 -
@Kali225 I have not been on a train in years. I would love to let someone else drive me home. Not saying it doesn't have its own problems. Just would like a change of pace.
@strong_fit_ells I love the smell of new puppies. She is so cute.
@MaddawgMadsen Smile often. It is free.
Got in a walking FitOn. And a 24 minute upper body workout. They were both great. Work was fast today.

@strong_fit_ells - omg! The puppy is so cute!
@jugar - That sounds like a fantastic day for you and Jasper, and that meal also sounds delicious!
@MaddawgMadsen - Don’t be afraid to be selfish about yourself. No one else is going to dedicate as much time as you will to better yourself.
I think about that a lot. It’s very easy for me, especially at work, to want to people please, but now I make time for myself. I also focused a lot this past year on my own professional development, and I had to tell people no in order to make time for me and my goals. It was uncomfortable for me at first because I didn’t like saying no, but it helped me a lot and I had one of my best years at work.
It was terribly windy and rainy last night which scared my dog around 3am. I heard him leave our room and go downstairs, so I followed and found him in a corner in our basement. I carried him back upstairs and sat with him and pet him until he calmed down, so I’m a bit tired this morning.
I have a big project deliverable today so I’m focused on that. I plan on taking my dog for a long walk now that it’s slightly warmer out this morning, then work, and hopefully get in a yoga workout before the end of the day. I am going into the office tomorrow and Friday because we’re getting our solar panels installed and they will need to shut off the power at my home.3 -

Wooohooo new decade
Yesterday was good, I did the treadmill for 30 min, pilates for 20 and yoga for 20. Lots of standing balance poses. Dinner was chicken, rice and broccoli - so BORING ! lol Since weigh in day is over, tonight I will make homemade Italian cheesesteak pizza.
@strong_fit_ells Such a cutie, I am excited for you and don't feel bad about your friendship, I stopped seeing my best friend as much also. We would spend atleast 1 weekend a month together, but the past year, I saw her 3 times. The reason is all they want to do is hang out and drink, and I am kinda over that, it just isn't who I want to be anymore, so I make sure if we do get together it's to actually do something, not just lets just sit around and drink.
@MaddawgMadsen The best revenge is living well.
Have a wonderful day !

@Gidgitgoescrzy congrats on the new decade!!
@Kali225 what a fun activity with your friend.. sounds like a great time
We got snow overnight and it's super cold here and getting colder. I had the Flames game last night and I handled it well. We were together 5 hours and I had 3 drinks. Those box suites usually turn into a bender so that felt like a win. I also didn't eat at supper and in the box - just let my supper be enough.4 -
-37 Celsius will be our overnight low by Friday, which is -34.6 Fahrenheit.. it's dangerous levels of cold. Luckily I only have to go into the office today and tomorrow and can work from home Friday.5

Just barely inching my way down. But, I didn't make many CrossFit or spin classes in December, so I know I lost a little muscle mass. I feel smaller even though the weight doesn't show it much. I'm pretty sure I'm just building back the muscle I lost in December.
@ashleycarole86 - Tuesday, January 9th - 4,923 steps, 1 hour of CrossFit --- Stay warm! Those are scary low temperatures.
@gidgitgoescrzy - Nice work on making it to a new decade! You're rocking it!
@adrimango - I did have pasta last night because the mealime meal we chose was a pasta one. But, I used chickpea pasta, so way more protein and fewer carbs than a normal bread or pasta would have. So, I don't feel like I really broke my no processed carbs challenge. The meal called for tofu, pasta, tomatoes, zucchini, garlic, basil, lemon, and red chili flakes. I added toasted pine nuts to it because I LOVE pine nuts.
Thank you everyone for the advice! Hopefully we can all gain something from it!

It looks like we're building another lovely green week. Excellent progress!
I also hope everyone got through the crazy storms well, and that the Albertans have not frozen to their chairs. It is flipping cold - but that happens every winter, right? You amazing people.
Congrats on hitting the 150s @Gidgitgoescrzy ! Two weeks in a row of a strong showing - be careful not to get into that "too hungry" place or listen to the "food reward! food reward!" voice although the post-weigh-in supper sounds pretty amazing. Enjoy!
I'm struggling with upping steps, but doing better at keeping up the nightly exercise bike sessions. Hopefully we'll get more snow and I'll be out there on the snowshoes again soon.
Thursday people coming up! I'm getting to the nagging early tonight

@strong_fit_ells that is such a cute puppy!
@ashleycarole86 wow! That is crazy low temperatures!! Stay warm and safe!
The storm blew through yesterday, luckily we didn't lose power. However I have a terrible migraine tonight 😕 combo of hormones and weather. Hopefully it will be gone by tomorrow.3 -
such good advice in here, I love this question Jolene! the ones that came to mind for me:
- if you don't like change, you'll like relevance even less.
- let go or be dragged. (this one might be a proverb of some kind).
@ashleycarole86 stay cozy!!
@Gidgitgoescrzy new decade wooooo!
@zumbaforever I do like taking the train although my line is infamous in Boston for... following the schedule it feels like, in that exact moment. It's nice to be able to read (or nap) on my commute home and I actually do my makeup on the train every morning that I go into the office
solid day for me - got Chipotle for lunch which is actually a huge amount of protein. I brought my snowboard into work so I could get it waxed at REI after work and I ended up getting a nice walk in, too, about 30 min. hit my step goal which is pretty rare since the foot issue cropped up.
got yoga done just now and swinging into dinner.
Work was definitely a frustrating day but I ended it by complaining with some coworkers who were feeling the same things and it was very funny and cathartic. I have therapy tomorrow for the first time in a month and have to pack up after work to head to NY for snowboarding this weekend!!7 -
Happy Birthday today to my younger daughter!
I’m staying up for a bit longer to digest, because our lasagne supper was so delicious and filling (with half the serving even!). I stopped taking a daily antacid last month, but am paying the price tonight with major GERD/heartburn. It happens with the foods that trigger IBS as well, including garlic. Oh well. It tasted divine!
I’ll be solo in the office tomorrow but still plan to use my desk-elliptical for a few minutes plus a few reps.
Have a great night, everyone!7 -
@wishfuljune We put solar panels on our garage years ago. Had the first side installed. Decided we wanted to do the second side ourselves. Love them.
No workout today. To busy. Got home after 1000. Silly grocery store closed their seafood counter at 1700. That is nuts. Most people get off then. No time to get there. My copperband butterfly fish has to have clams or mussels. I will try tomorrow. Still have a couple clams frozen.
