New Month, New Goals, and NEW YEAR!! Welcome to 2025!🥳

January, the first month of the year. A perfect time to start all over again, changing energies and deserting old
moods, new beginnings, and new attitudes. ~ Charmaine J. Forde

I thought that the above quote was a good one to start the new year off with. 2024 had struggled for so many people but somehow here we are ready to face a new year with hope and determination. 💪

Whether you work out in the Gym, with YouTube, The Walk at Home App, or old school with DVDs, we're glad you're doing something for yourself! Remember NOW is always a great time for a walk.

No matter your goal for the month, we're happy to have you join us. Don't be afraid to chime in because we all want to support you and your goals.

Happy New Year all. May 2025 bring us all that we are looking and hoping for. Thanks @Deeder522 for getting this month - and year - kicked off.

I am still finalizing some of my overall goals and intentions for the year. Will probably be a work in progress for a few weeks, now that I have been able to reflect on 2024. It was a roller coaster of a year, with amazing highs and some scary lows. But it is in the rear view mirror now.

My goals for the month of January are to successfully complete 4 Garmin walking challenges. I will use mainly WAH to do this, since it is cold and snowy here, but do hope to get outside a bit. So the challenges are:
January Weekend Walking - get a 3 mile walk in from Jan 10 to Jan 12.
Active January - record 20 activities of 20 minutes or more.
January walking - walk for 30 miles from January 1 to 31 and
January Steps - get 300,000 steps this month (gulp.) This is the one I am the most concerned about.

I'll check in at least weekly to update.

Best of luck to all of us and wishing good health to all.

    January Goals

    Milage Tracked - 60 Miles
Apple Challenge - complete my Stand ring 25 times.

I've decided that I need to start migrating my diet to a more Anti-Inflammatory diet. I find this difficult as I love carbs and not fruit and veggies. It also means upping my water intake.
I will also keep on walking but add more strength training as the year goes on.

@megd44 Glad to see you join us for another month here. You have so strong goals. I can't wait to see you reach them. 😊

    Let's GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last year actually turned out a bit better than I thought as I was very strong in the first half of the year. This year, I have weight to lose, so I need to get back on the workout train! However, I am aware after the last couple of months that I will need to start slow and pay attention to my energy levels. So, my plan is to do Jessica's Walk and Talk 15 minute Challenge 4 days a week (which is basically every other day) and try to work up to Leslie's 20 minute workouts by the end of the month. Hopefully, by then we will know what is going on with me and I can increase my workout mileage for Feb. In the meantime, I am focusing a larger percentage of my calories on iron rich foods and Vit C that helps metabolize iron.

January Goal: Logging every day + 15 minute workout every other day working up to 20 minute workouts by the end of the month.

    I'm ready TO GO!!!

Oh my gosh!!!! I did it and I was not even breathing hard!!!! My muscles did not give out and I feel great!!! Gosh it takes a while to really lose all your fitness doesn't it! I may bump it up to 20 minutes next week and 30 by the end of the month if Sat and Mon are this easy. Frankly, I am amazed because my last 1 mile workout on Sept 8 was a slog that I barely finished. Amazing what blood and iron can do for you!

We were supposed to be under a 4-14" snow warning and we got less than an inch of snow!!! This is the 3rd time this has happened this winter and I am beginning to ignore these watches and warnings! We get more snow from a random storm they do not tell us about than we do from these "be afraid and do not travel" warnings!! :grumble:

Speaking of weather, the funniest thing is going on on our shoreline. Our neighbor, 2 docks down has a bubber to keep his dock from freezing in the ice. Well this thing is so powerful that our entire bay is water. It is so weird to look out and see skim ice on the shore, rippling water and then about 100' out, solid ice! If he keeps it, we may leave our dock in the bay next year since without ice, the wind is no issue.

Come on you two!!! It's Jan 2! Get cracking! See you on Saturday!

@zichab you are doing great!! That is fabulous news. We are also under a weather warning for about 6 inches of snow tomorrow. Since we got 4 inches yesterday when we were supposed to get no accumulation, expecting it. We'll see i suppose.

So yesterday I did the WAH old school Walk of the Pounds Full. Then just kept moving. Over 12,000 steps. Today I did the WAH Mix and Match Blasters Workout B with the Flexibility Walk added. I am at over 10,000 steps today. Will probably wander around my house in a bit to hit 11,000.

Did I mention my calfs hurt?!?! Going up stairs, yikes!! But overall feeling pretty good. I am hopeful that I'll be able to keep it up. The end of next week is a bit crazy work wise, so that will be a BIG test.

I'm just popping in to say you're both off to a great start. I've also been under a "special weather advisory". We've come to realize this means it going to snow. We got 2-3 inches last night and are looking at another 2-4 into Saturday.

In other exciting news, My Dad scored a few Gazzell Elliptical for me and dropped it off today. The electronic tracker is buggered a bit, but Ry is going to see if he can save it. I know my Apple watch can track that type of workout so if Ry can't fix it, it won't be a huge loss to me.

That is great news @Deeder522!! Gazzells are great for non impact and goid calorie burns. Hope you can get the counter fixed.

Hope you are ok with the snow, sounds like you do not get it much. We are super cold here today, in the teens. And it is supposed to be 20s and below, with some days real feel like 8, and on and off snow all week. Looks pretty but too cold for me to go out. Even on snow shoes or skiis.

I ditched Jessica's Walk & Talk for Leslie's WOFF!!! I need to at least break a sweat and Jessica was not doing it for me. I can remember when I could not wait for Jessica to be done so I could sit down! I am going to stick to 20 minute workouts for this week and next week and then move up to 30 minutes. Gosh this feels so good!!!!

I am so happy for you @Deeder522! Low impact high calorie burns for you!!! :+1: What a great Dad!!! When I saw the lake effects from Lake MI, I thought you guys might get buried. Lake Ontario's wind went south so Syracuse got buried, but not the Adirondacks! :grumble:

@megd44-I love Leslie and her old school ways. I am so glad I have so many DVDs to choose from as the new people are just not the same. Go old school!!!!

Looking ahead, I am off tomorrow, but will be back on Monday! See you then and keep walking!

Great job @zichab with your logging and goals. I like some of the old school WAH and also some of the new. Just did Wake up and walk Pittsburgh 4 miles and it totally kicked my butt. I love the blend of resistance with the band and the highet intensity with a bit of HIIT tossed in. And 7500 steps. A nap may be in my future lol. Especially since the Lions game isn't on until 8:20 tonight.

@Deeder522 I feel a bit silly assuming you don't get much snow after reading Zichab's message about Lake effect from Lake Michigan. What area do you live? I am in Northern lower Michigan, about 2 miles from Lake Michigan. The really heavy stuff usually gets over us, but once in a while it just stays and gets ugly. Not much snow on the ground now, maybe 6 inches, but it is cold. :#

Hope you both have great weeks. With my nutso schedule not sure when I'll get back on. Will try to update Tuesday before it goes completely insane.

I dropped 3 pounds last week!! WOOT!!!! I know most of it was water, but I'll take it! It makes it clear that I have to work out to lose weight. Food alone will not do it. Gosh I hope this iron problem is solvable because it feels so great to move and not have to sit down afterward.

Oh my gosh!!! Apparently MI is the place for Leslie! I lived in MI from 1999-2020 and taught at Mott! We lived in Grand Blanc and although we got snow, Lake Huron's snow went to Saginaw but mostly to Ontario. :grumble: Once in awhile, Lake MI would send snow our way but not often. I found Leslie when we lived in MI and have been working out with her ever since. @Deeder522 has been here a long time as well. I moved back to NY when I retired as we wanted to live in the mountains and we are both from NY. We still root for the Lions, unless they are playing the Bills, then all bets are off!

We need to go to Glens Falls (south of here by about 2 hours) for a root canal for Dennis on Wednesday. Of course, we are supposed to get 8-14 inches of snow starting at 1AM on Tuesday and ending 7PM on Wednesday! This better be another dud because that is a long ride on winding mountain roads!!!!!

Have a great day and I'll see you MI ladies tomorrow!!!

I've done less than 10 minutes on the Gazzell so far. We figured out yesterday how to adjust the resistance. There are 4 resistance levels and I'm starting on level 2. My watch will track the exercise so I'm good there.
Ry has been waking up earlier since the time change and it's messed up my whole schedule. I used to exercise in the morning before he was up. Now that isn't happening and I'm working on the mindset to workout later in the evening.

@megd44 I'm Between Grand Rapids and Allendale. If/when the lake effect hits me it's the edge usually but we can get a beating occasionally. Grand Rapids gets more of a lake effect than we do usually. 🤷🏼‍♀️ We blame that on the Grand River, it seems to split the weather events and everything goes Nothr or South of us. That being said we got many 3inch total, lol. I have relatives in Ludington about 2-3 blocks from the lake. They get a decent pounding every year. How far North are you?

@zichab Safe travels for you guys on Wednesday. Nice drop on the scale. Great way to start January off!

So, quick update on my goals before the craziness of the week starts tomorrow. I don't expect I'll be able to check in again before Saturday, but we'll see.
    For my 4 goals:
January walking: 15.5 miles so far, 30 mile goal
Active January: 8 activities over 20 minutes so far, goals of 20
January steps: 82,409 steps, goal of 300,000.
The last one is for this weekend.

@zichab I hope the storm doesn't hit you and that Dennis' procedure goes well!

The Michigan connections are great!! Though I first found Leslie when I was living out west for 11 years.

@Deeder522 Lake effect is just crazy!! I live outside of Empire, so Traverse City region. We are less than 2 miles off the lake. Usually it gets past us and nails Kalkaska/Mancelona/Gaylord, but when it wants to stick around it can be unbelievable. Right now I'd say about 6 inches on the ground and we are supposed to get an inch or 2 daily for the next couple of days. Hoping to get some snow shoeing in over the weekend.

Oh my gosh I feel so good! I had no idea how bad I was feeling and doing. I cleaned my entire 2nd floor today (well, I still have to mop the Kitchen floor, but I'll do it after dinner), helped Dennis bring in 4 loads of wood, took down all the Christmas decor and worked out and it's only 5:30!!!! I so love having my energy back!!!

I love both Grand Rapids and Traverse City. We used to have a lot our conferences in Traverse City and the drive up from Flint was so pretty, especially around Gaylord. One of the professors in my discipline retired to the Leelanau Peninsula and he loves it there. In 2018, we had barely any snow in Grand Blanc so we went to Traverse City to an Air B&B just to have snow! We are very sick people!

@deeder522 you cracked me up with your comment about Ryan!!! Dennis was complaining yesterday about me! He said, "What are you doing up? This is my coffee and iPad time by the fire and I am used to being alone!" I have been getting up early now that I am back to normal and it is a huge adjustment for him apparently! I am glad you figured out your Gazzell though.

Off to Glens Falls tomorrow, but I'll be back here to post my Friday work out! Hold down the walking fort MI!!

Well, yesterday I got to drive in a little bit of Lake Effect snow. Fun times!
Today I managed to do a solid 10 minutes on the Gazelle. that was the most I could muster. Looks like I need to build my team on that slowly.

This is the 1st time I've ever had everything set for my taxes as early. They are filed and ready for the portal. Fiscally, 2024 was a heartbreaking year for us.

Driving through lake effect is no fun @Deeder522 !! Been doing that a lot lately too. Do jealous that you have all your tax stuff set.

Got a horrible cold/flu starting late Thursday night. Fever, aches, cough, the whole thing. Last workout was Wednesday. I'll be taking it easy until I recover, so you probably won't here from me much in the next few days.

@megd44 I'm sorry to hear about your ill health. A friend also came down with the ick, so it must be going around. Hopefully, you can shake it off and return to some workouts. In the meantime, maybe some gentle stretching.

We are expecting some more snow for the next couple of days. My work schedule is filling up for the month.

After a little time off, we are trying a smaller amount of carbs on Ry. 🤞🏻 that his body is more accepting this time.

I am so psyched! I not only walked outside in the freezing cold for a bit over a mile, but I also walked 4.7 miles one day this week!!!!! However, I only dropped .4 ponds so I am back on earth!
You can build up on the Gazzell @deeder522. We all built up to walking 3 and 4 miles with Leslie and Jessica, so it is doubtful a machine is going to hold you back!!! It looks like MI is going to get some more lake effect snow mid-week. I am sorry about your fiscal year, but at least it makes for fast tax filing right? It has not been a great year for many people, so you are not alone that is for sure.
Oh no @meegd44! I feel so bad for you. I have heard that the colds this year are ferocious! My neighbor got one and ended up with pneumonia! Not much you can do but rest that's for sure.
I'm sorry I missed being here on Friday. When I got back from my walk outside, I had to get dinner and then Dennis and I are watching The Crown on Netflix. Our son got us a subscription for Dennis' birthday in October and this is the first we have used it. Then he had an appointment for a carotid artery ultrasound on Saturday and since we were out we went shopping!!!! Our hospital is so backed up that they are working on Saturdays and Sundays!!! It's nuts!!
I'll be here tomorrow and I am going to try the 30 Minute BIG Burn and see how I do. The 20 minute walk is not really taxing me much so I think I can do it. I'll let you all know tomorrow!

This cold weather is 129% zapping all motivation I have for exercise. I slept in today and just want to curl up on the sofa and be cozy for the rest of the day.

@megd44 I'm sorry to here about your + test of C-19. I've been through it 3x now. The last time was August last year and it took a while to bounce back. My biggest suggestion to you and your hubby. Push fluids, like electrolytes, get anti-inflammatory foods and vitamins in you as well. Vitamin D, Zinc, turmeric. Bone broth was a good one for me.

I did it!!! :+1: I walked for 30 minutes AFTER doing a big clean on our downstairs bathroom where the plumber made a huge black mess! YUCK!! There was crap in the pipe and it clogged and a lot of it ended up on my bathroom wall and floor. Drain's open, so that is the good news!!!
Oh no @megd44! I am so sorry to hear you both contracted COVID!!! I've only had it once and it was really just a bad cold with a cough, so I'd listen to @deeder522. She has had a lot more experience with it! I am home most of the time so I have very little exposure, but I am experiencing more trips to the hospital and Med Centers as they try to figure out what is going on with my iron level. I think I will wear a mask tomorrow for my mammogram. One option is that I might have a breast tumor that is using up all my iron. I still think it is gastro related, but you know, they need to make you take all the tests your insurance will pay for first. :ohwell:
I actually feel kind of lucky that I am more of a night person because the winter is my favorite time to work out. I actually went for a walk in the snow this week while Dennis was blowing the driveway. So many people have seasonal problems in Jan and Feb and mine are in June and July. Just stay cozy @deeder522, spring is coming! See you all on Wednesday!

I am moving up to 30 minute walks every other day for the rest of January. I am feeling so good and I need to get this weight off! I am so anxious for my blood test next week to see what my iron is doing. I am sure it is way up and my hemoglobin must be back to about normal considering my workout energy.
How are things going on the Gazzell @deeder522? Dennis and I brought in 5 loads of wood yesterday (we pile it away from the house to avoid carpenter ants and then bring it to our enclosed porch as we need it) and it was C-O-L-D out there!!!! The wind was awful! I thought of you and when I came in, I got all cozy in front of the fire and did not move again until dinner!!!! It took that long to get warm again! At least, I can pile on enough blankets to get warm in winter.
How are things going with COVID @megd44? Are you feeling better? I know it takes a while to fully feel like yourself again, but hopefully, the worst has passed for you two! I am thinking of you!
See you all on Friday for what will hopefully be another 30 minute walk!!!

@zichab My Gazzell time has been temporarily replaced by snow shoveling. 🤣
We're warming up into the 30s for the next couple of days and then we'll plunge into the single digits and negative wind chills.

Great job @zichab with hitting your goals. @Deeder522 snow shoveling is no joke!! This is the first morning it hasn't showed here all week. It looks beautiful out there!! Part of me is glad I don't need to be out on it. The other part is sad because by the time I am feeling ready to snowshoe or ski, it will be brutally cold. 🥶 🧊

Finally starting to feel better. First bout with COVID and it was pretty brutal. Needless to say, I haven't done a walk since January 9 so my goals are fairly shot for the month. Going to still push on some of them to see what I can hit.

This week, I want to focus on rebuilding stamina. So aiming for at least 3, max of 5, walks of 30 minutes or more each day. I'll reset next Friday depending how I feel.

Thanks @megd44! Considering that a month ago I could barely walk from my living room to my kitchen, I feel terrific! I want to push for 3 miles, but I know my body needs some recovery time for all that time with such low hemoglobin. I have a blood test next week and I am hoping my iron and hemoglobin are back to normal levels. Even low normal will be a win.
This brings me to a point @megd44! Do not push it. COVID is no joke and if you had it bad, your lungs will need time to recover. I notice a lot of people on MFP trying to get back to lifting and long cardio after COVID and they often have to stop, especially those who report they had a bad case of it. Be careful!
I hear you @deeder522! Dennis does most of the snow shoveling, but when he was working, I did it all. He was head of snow removal at his air base so when we got snow, he was on base and I had to keep the driveway open. I have no interest in going back to those days again!!! :noway:
We are getting the 3-6 snowstorm tomorrow that you two are getting today and then the -10 to -15 temps will start! We are bringing in lots of wood and are running both the upstairs and downstairs fireplace inserts! We plan to hunker down next to the fires and read for the next week!
Stay warn! I'll "see" you on Sunday!

@megd44 I've had C-19 3 times. You have to ease yourself back into life. I can tell I'm struggling from my last round back in August. I'd focus on starting back in with 15 minutes and build back up from that.

@zichab I'm trying to get the kid to understand that he needs to do the whole driveway and not just where we park. We all have snow tires but he doesn't like to pull the snow blower out unless there's at least 4" of snow on the ground. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I've got a working weekend, so I'm doing the stairs going back and forth to check on a computer that is due for delivery Monday morning. The job has been the headache I knew it would be too. Sometimes you just know.
I'm heading out tonight, meeting up with some friends to watch the Lions game.
Ry's weight seems to be holding in the mid-160s again. The amount of things we have to make from scratch is, at times, overwhelming but in some ways, it seems to help. Currently, fresh squeezed lime juice and Simple Syrup from Raw Cane Sugar. I bet you didn't think that a margarita was an electrolyte drink did you?

Thanks @Deeder522 and @zichab for the reminders not to move too fast. I will need to remember that for all aspects of my life!!

I did a 30 minute super easy walk yesterday. From the app, I did 3 of the mix and match walks. Each is about 10 minutes. I did what was in essence a warm up, low intensity walk then a flexibility walk as a cool down. It felt great to move. Then I decided to clean the entire house and do a bunch of laundry. That might have been a bit much, lol.

Only thing planned today is a store run with the hubby. Normally wouldn't do that errand in these frigid temps, but we are almost out of dog and chicken food. No choice really.

Hope you stay warm and have great days.

I so want to go to 3 mile walks, but I KNOW I need get and keep my iron levels up for my blood test on Tuesday!! I have not been this consistent in over a year and I can't believe I did not think of a physical cause!!!! :grumble: Meh, I'm on it now and hopefully, can get back to 3 mile walks in Feb. I lost another .6 pounds though so there is that! :blushing:
I hear you @deeder522! Ya just know when a customer or product is going to give you headaches!! It's like there is an inner voice that says "This is going to be a tough one!" Dealing with Mac people is also rough I think. People accept a slow boot up on PC, but Mac people expect that as soon as we push the button the computer is ready to go!!! LOL New Mac people are a nightmare, I know that first hand. They cannot get used to how easy and intuitive Mac is compared to PC. Teaching Dennis to use iPhone and Macbook has giving me great respect for what you do. Mail this year has been dreadful! USPS has been so slow and unpredictable and even UPS has been slow. Breath Deep and run up and down those stairs! Your Watch will love it!!!
As a normally high energy person, I feel your pain @megd44! Slowing down is so hard. I am also deep cleaning my house from almost a year of minor neglect to 2 months of severe neglect! I have 2 more zones to go and the whole house will be back to normal and all the spiders and dust bunnies will have been dispatched! :+1:
My plan for this week had to be modified around MD appointments, both mine and Dennis'. so, I'll be here on Monday, Thursday and Saturday next week if all goes well. Have a great week!!!

I know this says "Boosted Fitness Walk," but trust me, I did not do any boosting!!! It was on You Tube and it was actually the 5 mile walk from Miracle Miles. It was all chopped up so I do not recommend it. We are at -5F today going down to -10F tonight, but when I went out to get wood, it actually felt warmer than Saturday when Dennis and I put the wood on the porch. No wind and lots of sun helps a lot.
Blood test tomorrow so fingers crossed my iron is back to normal!!

    January Goals

    Mileage Tracked - 42 / 60 Miles
    Apple Challenge - complete my Stand ring 25 times. 18 / 25

I had the "joy" of driving in snow squalls and whiteout conditions today. 😖 The client delivery was delayed just a bit but the delivery and setup went extremely smoothly. 🥰
Down side is Ryan had to help me more than we expected this weekend and now he's past spent. It didn't help that he decided to build a new machine part by part for a client at the same time. I'm not sure what happened to his thought process there. 🤦🏼‍♀️

🤞🏻 for you @zichab. I need to try and get my labs done this week.

@megd44 How you hang in there, up there?

@Deeder522 the weather is awful, isn't it. So much for too cold to snow. It is below zero here with a wind chill of about -15. So glad for a flexible, hybrid workplace. Definitely no plans of driving the next couple of days.

@zichab hope you get good news with you labs.

Did one of Leslie's easy walks yesterday and today. As in 17 to 18 minute mile easy. Total of about 1.5 miles each. Feels great to get more movement in. Hoping it warms up enough to go snow shoeing this weekend. So pretty out there.

Hope you are hanging in with the nasty weather!!
