What’s your go-to strategy for staying active on days when motivation is low?

I watched a most interesting video from a bodybuilder/trainer I follow on YouTube. He's an exercise physiologist with a Doctorate so he isn't gimmicky and just pulling stuff out of thin air. He said that we focus to much on "exercising" when we should focus on our daily lives and moving. He said if you don't move, you get old. If you move, you stay young. So I decided to follow the principle and what I do is I make sure that every hour I am moving with purpose. Sometimes all I can do is stand, take the garbage out, walk a flight of stairs, etc. and other hours I can clean the bathrooms, vacuum, wash floors, organize a closet. Game changer! I work from home (real estate agent) but have found that I can take a phone call while standing and moving around (unloading the dishwasher, making coffee, wiping down the fridge). The circles on my Apple Watch are happy and I feel so much better to have blood flow throughout my body. I have less aches and pains and my lower back is happy that I'm not sitting so much. I also applied the principle of never walking out of a room empty handed so when I leave my office, I take up my empty water bottles to the recycling bins in my garage. When I walk out of my kitchen, I take the dirty dish towels to the laundry room. This has me walking more, doing more stairs, carrying more things, bending more (using proper form, of course), and it all adds up. I still do my 45 minutes of weight training and 30 minutes on my stepper but all the movement prior to my working out serves as the warm-up and the more energy I have, the more motivated I feel. You may be able to apply some of these components to your daily life and you may see the benefits I see.

@jellytree – Bergamot is orang-y. A lovely creamy one to try is Ohio Tea Company’s Cream Earl Grey. Also Truly Teas Crème de Earl Grey. Another good one, but a little more expensive, is Birdsong Tea’s Blackcap Creamy Grey. I would suggest trying out Ohio Tea Company first and get the small size bags of ones that look good to you. They are usually around $4 to $6 for a 1 ounce package. And they are my #1 favorite family owned small business.

@AnAbsoluteDiva – Love your strategy! Thank you for elaborating!

Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare was your typical gory slasher. But I have to say the Tinkerbell side story was so sad. I enjoyed it, though. And don’t feel bad for Peter Pan, @teresaw2024 cuz he’s the bad guy! When we sat down to the previews, I had commented to Hunter that I wished they’d release the Bambi horror one I heard about awhile back. And then one of the previews was Bambi: The Reckoning! Hahahaha! Can’t wait!

ICE BREAKER QUESTION OF THE WEEK: If you had one full year to devote to one particular interest, and become proficient, what would you choose? I would choose learning to speak French fluently. I barely remember anything from High School classes. Although I frequently say, “Je ne sais pas.” Hahahaha

DISCUSSION QUESTION: What’s your go-to strategy for staying active on days when motivation is low? I have to ruminate on this one. I usually give in to my inner sloth.

Thank you for the Birthday Bunny, @trooworld 😊
A Happy Birthday to me 😊 51 rotations and still no gray hair! Planning on going out to dinner for a black bean burrito and margarita with my daughters, grands and mother 😊

@vegan4lyfe2012 No worries glad you logged it. Oh I may have to order the Ohio Tea Company's Earl Gray Cream for my Mom. I gifted her a small Teavana Earl Gray Cream and gave her Teavana's a few years ago that was really good (I kept some for myself too). Happy Birthday to you! You look beautiful and way younger than 51. Did something change with Disney's copyright that more Disney versions are coming out?

@AnAbsoluteDiva It sounds like you're doing great taking the YouTube pro's advice, it does make a big difference to add in more activity. I got really good at it when I had my Fitbit! It sounds like you get a lot of exercise between intentional workouts and adding it in throughout the day.

@trooworld Great job on day 2 of the challenge! Bean soup sounds delicious I'm glad it turned out great. The mushroom class was awesome, I can't wait for the next one! Kind of overwhelming trying to grasp it small scale then imagining how we'd do it at the farm. I'm really curious how you'll like the pilates bar it's a great idea as doing bicep curls and leg extensions with it would be a lot more stable than without the bar on the band. I'm tempted to get one!

@TeresaW2024 I'm glad you and your Pastor are getting along so well, it sounds like you got a lot done! It's hard to balance the social eating with our goals, you have my sympathy there. It's hard with challenges like that but maybe you can think of a way to bring something healthy you can eat (the shrimp cocktail was mine at Christmas and it went over real well). Shoot I'm sorry there's no answers on Maggie's lump yet.

@micaroo4 Oh no that update sounds frustrating! I hope you can get back to walking too. I've done a few Leslie Sansone videos recently, they're pretty fun for indoor workouts.

@morenin Very interesting background on the company getting MFP user locations, I didn't delete my app but I'm curious WHY they want it.

@AprilRaineyBattle Yum your split peas sound delcious, I used to do something similar with lentils. Oh my gosh the phone is SO frustrating for responding here! The other thing I'll give you a head's up with is if people post a link do NOT click on it until after you've entered your post or you'll lose everything. Oh we have similar workout strategies, I have a 10 minute song I love that's great for working out and if I still don't want to work out after it I let myself stop which rarely happens. Dance is a great way to “not” have a workout but actually have one!

@jellytree I like the no bra thing at home working out too! Thank you!

ICE BREAKER QUESTION: If you had one full year to devote to one particulat interest and become proficient what would you choose? It would be something in the gardening field, herbs for health, or learning an instrument. Great question!

@FushiaKat Great job fixing your trike! I'm glad you're safe from the fires. Keep up the great exercise!

Hi team! All caught up! Started tomatoes and lettuce at the greenhouse this morning, we got done pretty fast. The article that came out for the farm newsletter has popped up in all the local papers, I figured it wasn't a big deal having an awful pic go in the newsletter but it was on the cover of the paper I brought in at my brother's house last weekend. Had my pain doctor appointment which is refills then got the Ball canning jars we need to grow mushrooms in, the next step is postponed as one of the volunteers who took the class is going out-of-town so we're waiting for her to get back. I made shrimp to put over a miso salad kit from Trader Joe's for my roommate and I, I'll definitely get that one again! Have a great Friday team.

@AnAbsoluteDiva functional/practical movement in lieu of or addition to exercise is so smart. I like the idea of intentionally moving more doing everyday things.

I am starting to desire sweetener less and less these days. Copying an idea I saw on a Reddit post, I made a coffee creamer with dates and almond milk in the blender. Fixed the coffee up all nice and tasted it and decided I didn't like sweetener in it at all and poured it all out. Then used an unsweetened nut pods creamer in a cold brew and was pretty happy with the flavor without sugar.

My husband (the chef) made a lemon cake and brown sugar cake for some lunch catering orders and I am not tempted. (If it was cookies, it might be another story.) There is some leftover and I'm going to suggest that he either freeze it or give it away.

4 inches of snow and our house has a huge footprint, being on the corner with a 3 car driveway. 2 hours of shoveling today. I'm considering never moving again... But definitely a good workout!

Wait! What did I miss? What is this about the Myfitnesspal app being hacked?! What does that mean exactly? Do I have to delete the app, are they planning to fix the problem? What is the big deal if it gets hacked??? What info could someone get on you that is not already out on the web? Most sites you're on take info, like your number and email address already. Unless you pay for the app then they might get your card number which would be an issue. Luckily, for me, I don't pay for this. I use the free version.

In this case, a company unconnected to MFP has figured out how to access where people's phones are thru the app. I don't believe they have a way to link phone location to real names. A number of popular apps have been hit. They are then selling that information. It's not technically illegal... yet. MFP has not announced what they're going to do about it- in fact I'm not sure they even acknowledged it, I read about it in Wired. I've chosen to uninstall the app and use the website, for the time being, cause the whole thing makes me nervous.

@morenin Are they able to access credit card info? I don't pay for mine but my mom pays for hers.

The article said they're skimming location data and selling it to companies and government agencies. They may be able to connect account names with real names, but that's uncertain.

I'm having a crappy sleepless night. I started having very bad digestive upset with the ashwagandha that I was taking to help with my sleep, so I had to stop taking it. So now I'm back to insomnia. Workplace issues are on my mind, and that's contributing to the insomnia. My boss is leaving for a one week vacation, and she can't wait to get away from all of us. She says we've been b-witchy. I guess she can't see that it's actually herself whose being a b-witch, and the rest of us are just reacting to the snark attacks. I have a handyman coming today to look at my bathroom vent fan, but I really don't want to deal with him today. I don't know what time he's coming or how long he'll be here. Maybe I should just cancel.

@AnAbsoluteDiva The trainer is so correct! I work at home, too, and have to find mindful ways to get in movement throughout the day. Since I started Body Groove, I will often get up and just dance to the music in my head, which really does get the heart rate up and make my body feel great. :)

@vegan4lyfe2012 Happy Birthday!!! <3 You are one crazy lady, with your love of horrifying those sweet Disney characters.:D

@Katmary71 How is it going with the new roommate? Do you all have stuff in common? :)

@morenin Wow, that is a lot of shoveling and a great workout! Stay warm. :)

@micaroo4 I’m so sorry you had a sleepless night. I take Relaxium to help me sleep, which helps me fall asleep pretty well. It's staying asleep that I struggle with. I sure hope your boss comes back from vacation with a better attitude. Cancel the handyman and take a nap! <3

@trooworld Wahoooo on your 5.8 lb loss and a total of 24 lbs. is fantastic! B) I know that makes you feel like it was all worth it. Have you had to start wearing smaller clothes yet? Thanks for the reminder that I need to clean my desk off too! :D

Good morning! :) So, it is not good news for Maggie or my bank account. The vet called, and while they don’t think the lumps (there are two) have anything to do with her umbilical hernia, she wants to remove them. She wants to wait two or three months so we can get Maggie to drop a little weight to help with the surgery. Unless the masses start to grow rapidly, she goes in right away. So, she will send me a price quote next week for the surgery and one for her teeth cleaning if they have time while she is under. It’s all frustrating, and while I don’t like spending this kind of money on my dog, there is no way I’m letting her die before Joe does! :/

My pcp is letting me go back on phentermine for 3 months to try and restart my weight loss *happy dance*! It helps suppress appetite, which helps me because my psychiatric medicines are weight gainers (aka I'm unnaturally hungry on them, but I NEED them to function).

In exercise news, I fell off the wagon with the January challenge on Down Dog Yoga. But, I have a very good reason; with all the snow shoveling, I simply can't do it some days, due to having no energy left and/or muscles hurting too much. Since I ended up shoveling for 2 hours yesterday (my spouse was too sick to help, and my aunt is far too elderly to help), I am declaring today a rest day to recover! The next winter storm hits Saturday, so I will need my strength!

@morenin - I've done more than my share of shoveling snow, so I totally get what you're saying about using up your time, energy, and muscles. When I lived downtown, my landlord thought that since I had to get out first in the mornings, that clearing the driveway was MY problem. Then, when he finally came out, he would push all the snow from behind his car and into my parking spot - so when I arrived home, I'd have to shovel again in order to park my car. I don't miss those days!

@morenin I hope you get good results with the Phentermine. I tried that years ago, and it worked well until I got used to it, and then it stopped working for me. You are getting great cardio from the snow shoveling. Maybe just try to do some stretching exercises to help your sore muscles. 🙂

@trooworld I’ve been wanting one of those Ninja Creami! I can’t wait to hear if you like it. :)

Good morning! Well, my niece’s piece of crap, man, is acting up again, and it’s really bad. Cops called multiple times, and her being told that as long as he doesn’t get physical, he can do whatever he wants, including verbally abusing the kids. I just can’t get over the laws! We are getting them out of the house today and will start eviction proceedings, which could take up to two to three weeks! I will do whatever it takes; if I have to go into my retirement accounts, that is what we do. If you pray, please add my family to your list. :) This situation, on top of Maggie, my damaged wrist, and Joe’s dementia, has me feeling overwhelmed. But I’m clinging to my God and not sugar. I will not derail my progress!! :#

I learned that the police have no obligation to protect you, even though their motto is "to Protect and to Serve". Their job is to arrest people. So until he does something for which he can be arrested, the police aren't required to do anything.

@trooworld the date creamer was actually pretty good. Just wasn’t what I wanted. I think I am beginning to prefer the unsweetened coffee. Congratulations on the loss!

@TeresaW2024 So sorry to hear about your dog and your niece. I will say a prayer for both, I really hope it works out.

@morenin Shoveling is definitely a workout and it sounds like you will have a some more of those workouts coming up in the future. Have you ever tracked the calorie burns from it? I wonder if you need a good stretch afterwards?

@Katmary71 Yay on the loss! 160 is my first goal

Depending on the mood but today being in a warm room having on a comfy lounge set and putting together a nice jigsaw puzzle with a podcast or audiobook playing in the background sounds like a great evening.

@TeresaW2024 The laws are ridiculous, sending lots of love, strength, and prayers to all of you.

Hi team! I overdid a treatment last night and am haivng a flare, the tub's ready so I'm getting in and hoping it helps! Have a great Sunday. My brother's birthday celebration is tomorrow night which is always hard being a couple weeks into January and going for Southern BBQ. I went to an event today to check out local nonprofits and talked to some interesting organizations. I went with the other member of the charity that resigned and it was pretty uncomfortable running into the charity we used to be with. The local rotary charges $1000 a year to join which seems awfully steep! I think the "friends of the libary" organization ( @trooworld do you know much about them or does it vary by libraries?) to collect and set up book sales would be pretty fun, the women's club and an organization to get veterans off the street were two others we were interested in. Will catch up more tomorrow keep being awesome friends!

ICE BREAKER QUESTION: You have the chance to spend the evening any way you want. A night out with friends. A movie. A class. A book. A romantic dinner. Visiting someone special. How would you spend the evening? Either in bed (or in the tub) reading with a pot of tea and my cats or with a friend or two having dinner or doing a fun event. Or screaming my head off at a concert, haha! A romantic dinner with someone special would be awesome but no special guy in my life at the moment.

@trooworld I am just so happy for you. I hope you find all the great ways to make these days easier on yourself. It’s your chance to build your new lifestyle and relationship with food. Healthy ice cream will be great for summer.

    @AprilRaineyBattle what a nice question

    ICE BREAKER:

On my own, in front of the fireplace, my furry blanket, coffee, and a book.

With family and friends, a bbq in fall weather, light the fire pit, cider, hot chocolate, and cozy hoodies/sweats. I love feeding everyone and laughing for hours.

Nothing too exciting here. I am using another app to log meals. I like it better. Trying to do my 10k steps, and work on getting more water in. Doing good avoiding breads, which helps me quite a bit. Otherwise, spring cleaning and keeping up with kids.
