@nancyinmiami Nice topic about the library…I was thinking today that I would like to find a really good, meaty novel and remembering a few years ago reading one by Jodi Picoult…The Storyteller…forever changed my life and how I look at the holocaust. Jodi always picks a topic and gives new perspective, but some of them are hard to read. I've read several of hers.

Lately thought I've been reading light-hearted romance stories…nothing too heavy…just to relax. I'm just starting the fifth in a series by B. E. Baker…just finished Finding Liberty…very good story.

If you can recommend something meaty, would love it…not horror or graphically violent…just a nice story that can't be put down!

    A book I read quite a few years ago — that I "couldn't put down" — was:
Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing.

It took me a while to warm up to Lansing's journalistic style of writing, but once I did, I was hooked. I recall reading late into the night practically shivering in bed. Quite a story.

@jessicakrall8 I could talk books all day 😂. I agree Jodi Picoult does some great work and they can definitely be difficult to read at times. Especially Small Great Things or Nineteen Minutes. Some that I found un-put-down-able were Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, I read that several years before the HBO mini series. I also really liked Apples Never Fall and her newest one Here One Moment.

I also found the Beartown series by Fredrik Backman (also wrote A Man Called Ove) very good. I've enjoyed every one of his books.

How thick are you looking for? I read both Homer's Odyssey and Anna Karenina last year, but they were both a slog 😂. I could definitely have put them down if not for the fact that I hate to DNF a book. I don't recommend either of those. Or Wuthering Heights. 😳

@frankwbrown I hadn't heard of that book so had to look it up on Goodreads. OMG! I think I'd be a nervous wreck reading that, and shivering as well! 🥶 What an adventure!

I enjoyed The Second Mrs Astor by Shana Abe and both The Other Einstein & Carnegie's Maid by Marie Benedict. Maybe check out James Michener?🤷‍♀️

Not meaty but I enjoyed The Eyre Affair (the Thursday Next series) by Jasper Fforde 🙂

@nancyinmiami - I’m reading the Bandit Queen by Parini Shroff now. I liked both my last two book club reads: James by Percival Everett was a reimagined version of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Jim; and, the Briar Club by Kate Quinn described the lives and relationships among the (mostly) women living in a boarding house — told through the voice of the house. Our group likes historical fiction and I think all of those titles could fall into that category.

The January book was nonfiction but I liked that one, too. It was The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates. I’ve heard Pachinko is good @DaffyGirl88. I lived in Tokyo for about 6 years when I was younger, but I know very little about the game. So that one is on my reading list.

Thanks for all the recommendations, Shape Shifters. Enjoy your selections!

I loved The Women! Kristin Hannah is a favorite author. I also enjoy anything by Tana French. The Dublin Murder series was excellent if you like police stories.

Thank you to those who encouraged me to stay. I’m sorry the Quote feature isn’t working for me anymore. I need to somehow get back to healthy habits.

@PatriceFitnessPal i purchased James the minute it came out! I taught Huck Finn for about 10 years, so it was a must read for me. I wish I was still teaching so my students could read it side by side.

@Tomsgal1985 i really loved The Women too! Am thinking of picking up The Nightingale. Have you read that one? And happy to hear you’re staying 😊

For my next read, I’m going “real housewives” level with this one
