Things your parents didn't tell you about turning 40

Hello All!
This is just a fun posting about how subtle things in life creep up on you.
For example...I'm going to be welcoming my very first pair of progressive lenses. What are progressive lenses you ask...well it's a nice word for bifocals. I thought my eye sight was a little off lately

yeah, i have to get my eyes checked, i keep putting that off,,,, my hair is going grey, I HATE THAT! I notice my wrinkles now more, yes, i am a sun person!,, i think my energy level is higher tho, that is a good thing!0
-
And what the heck is up with the mood swings?? First the gray hair, then the glasses, and now I'm cranky?0
-
night sweats...thought they happened in the 50's....lol0
-
Yeah...
I'll be 40 tomorrow!
Not too happy about that!
Grays....slow weight loss ...and other stupid crap!
Oh well ....guess I'll just suck it up!0 -
I'm 41 now and was not happy about turning 40 but the alternative is worse My Mom never told me anything. But she stills says " Just add twenty years to now and see how you feel." Not a good motivator Mom !!!0
-
OK! I will admit! I am a little nervous about this 40 thing. A good think about it - I started this and I am trying to get a grip on my weight!0
-
That I would be wearing reading glasses and have the volume up so high on the TV that the police will come and tell you to turn it down. :sad:0
-
I turned 40 a couple of months ago and have found nothing has changed yet. I was already grey with rubbish eyesight anyway!
I lost a close colleague last year when she was only 38 so that makes me glad to be 40!0 -
I wish they had told me that my brain will be in denial about being 40, but my body will be fully aware! The aches and pains that have started to show up in the past couple of years, has my brain in open rebellioin screaming "I can't be old! Not yet!"0
-
I am thankful and grateful to be in my 40s. It has been almost 19 years when I gave birth to my son and my doctors did not think I would make it afterwards because my condition was very critical. My mother embraced her 40s very well and now that she is in her mid 60s she is really enjoying retirement and traveling and is in good health. That is what I desire to be healthy in every way.0

That being in your 40s is actually pretty great. Yes, I have to actually watch what I eat and how many beers I drink, and I have some grey hair--with more on the way, and teenagers zoom past me on the running trail, and I recently learned that my lower back is pissed off. But I'm so much wiser and more confident. Life has continued to improve with age.0

Yea! I hear ya!!
Me: "Hi Mom, how old were you when you started going through menopause?"
My Mom: " Oh yea I was about your age"
:noway: :ohwell: AND you were going to tell me that when???0 -
OMgosh, so many things have changed since I turned 40 !
1. That you will pee a little when you laugh !
2. The spare tire around my waist is more difficult to deflate !
3. Even though I do wear glasses, I find myself taking them off to read anything in small print !
4. You will become parents to your parents ! Helping them with many daily chores, appts. etc...
5. It is also an age when you finally come to realize what life is all about, you are finally a grown-up !!0 -

Edited... sorry. Not in the spirit of the thread... I think I will move it.0 -
The eye changes have really been an eye-opener (pun intended) for me. I didn't like bifocals
so I have 2 pairs of glasses - 1 for driving/ distance and the other for reading/ close up stuff.
I had perfect vision for most of my life so this definitely is a reminder that I'm getting older (48).
Rencath- what's wrong with what you posted - it's the truth!0 -
Can't think of any negatives right now but one thing I noticed is that I tend to give them advice more. (As opposed to never. )0
-
i suppose all of these things are true ~ i'm graying, but my sister has been gray since she was 25 ~ i wear glasses, but i've worn them since i was 7 ~ i pee when i laugh/cry/yell/sneeze, but i've done that since i had my first child 16 years ago ~ i have aches and pains, but i've had arthritis in my back and other places since i was 18 ~ sooooo, i guess for me, it's just more of the same old, same old ~ lol lol lol
i tell myself that the alternative to getting old really stinks!! then 40-ish doesn't seem so bad! haha0 -
Other than my hair thinning out and getting a little grey at 42 I feel like im 22!! But at 40 & 41 I felt like I was 60 + and it sucked feeling old!!0
-
I forget Im in my 40s...
43 yrs old and I wear glasses, waiting for the progressives...
Had big babies, which did some strange things to the bladder...but I had the same issue 10 years ago.
Went grey at 26 yrs old...one thing Im not impressed with is the chin hairs..what is up with that?0 -
i notice aches and pains that aren't debilitation, but they do make me take notice.0
-
I wish my mom were here to clue me in! The body is truly falling apart, which means I'm actually making an effort to take care of it now. I stopped admitting my age after age 35 and most people think I'm younger than I am. But surprise, lately I've felt more inclined to own my age. I have earned and deserve a certain position in life (and work)!0
-
What a fun group! Totally enjoyed reading all the posts. Started out my 40's by dealing with breast cancer - almost 9 years later I feel great and confident! Let me hair go gray, had lasik surgery last year - no more glasses/contacts - or reading glasses (yet!), more relaxed and loving being a grandmother!0
-
I got Lasik surgery when I was 37...he told me eventually I would need reading glasses...yeah...now is the time...I hate that...yes, the hot flashes & the aches & pains & the difficulty in losing weight...just gotta work harder...
AND...what is up with the sudden interest in wrinkle creams and eye serum? I can't stay away from that area in the store...
The knowledge that comes from experience is worth it though....I wouldn't go back to my 20's again if you paid me Forty is fabulous...:)0 -
On my 40th birthday, I went to the eye doctor. She actually apologized when she told me I was going to need bifocals and I told her it was my birthday. She relented and said I'd need them next time I came in. I'm 43 now. I haven't been back.0
-
So can you still be hot in your 40s? Is it too late for me to lose the weight and finally be hot again? That's the thing that's rumbling around my brain right now.0
-
I've decided if i lose the weight, i will be hot "with clothes on" LOL. Since i have so much to lose and i've done it once before and know how my skin looks, i've given up dreaming of shorts and bikinis LOL.
I hate that i need "magnifiers" to read anything in small print now. I was a voracious reader, now i rarely read :-(
The slower weight loss...ughh...
The joints hurting...double ugh
Worrying about how my skin is aging, having high blood pressure and all the other things you never thought you would get when you were younger...yeah, starting to happen.
I remember being a kid and hearing the grown ups talk about not being able to eat beans because they made them...err..pass gas. I laughed so hard because i couldn't imagine anything i ate affecting my body....
You know what the punchline is to that one, right? LOL!0 -
The night sweats. Too many of them and I have cranky days. They're not so bad with regular exercise so I better keep up with that!0
-
Yes!! You (one) has to be more disciplined, but it can definitely be done.0
-
I didn't want my parents to tell me anything! Life was so different when they were my age back then. There is new technology, medicine, health knowledge...so being in my 40s isn't the same for me as it was for them. There are things my parents wouldn't have done at my age that I do today, such as avidly skydiving. Yes, my body can't do what it did when I was 20, and I work within my so called limits, but I sure won't let that hold me back from life.0
-
Just turned 49....had glasses about a year now to read with. Just don't get over aches and pains as quickly. My mind says I should be younger.:drinker: I don't worry so much about the being hot. I was beat down with the whole ugly tree. LOL I do wonder how my body will look when the weight is off. Gonna start going to the gym. That should help tone it up. :bigsmile:0
