    "But how does something with no calories cause weight gain? Turns out that even if our taste buds can't tell the difference between real and fake sugar, our brains can. Another study, also presented at the American Diabetes Association meeting on Sunday, found that after three months of eating food laced with aspartame (which is also found in many diet soft drinks), mice had higher blood sugar levels than rodents who ate regular food. According to Fowler, who worked on all three studies and is now a researcher at UT Health Science Center at San Diego, the aspartame could trigger the appetite but do nothing to satisfy it. That could interfere with your body's ability to tell when you're full-and could lead you to eat more in general.

    It happens in humans, too. A 2008 study found that women who drank water sweetened with sugar and water sweetened with Splenda couldn't taste a difference, but functional MRI scans showed that their brains' reward center responded to real sugar "more completely" than it did to the artificial sweetener.

    "Your senses tell you there's something sweet that you're tasting, but your brain tells you, 'actually, it's not as much of a reward as I expected,'" Dr. Martin P. Paulus, a professor of psychiatry at the University of California San Diego and one of the authors of the study, told the Huffington Post. So you chase that no-calorie soda with something more caloric, like a salty snack. The sweet taste could also trigger your body to produce insulin, which blocks your ability to burn fat."

    If I understand this correctly, hyperinsulinemia is the name of when a person’s body produces insulin throughout the day (which blocks the body’s ability to burn fat). The insulin can be produced by food triggers, environmental triggers, sounds, etc.

    I believe I have some degree of hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance because I was obese. But, I also believe that my body has been slowly healing during the last two years. I have heard they are reversible.

    Thanks for the two studies because this is the kind of information I need to hear again.

    I have been reading so much lately about insulin resistance. I'm thinking this may just very well be a part of my problem. It is so difficult for me to loose a single pound and once lost, it finds its way back right away.

    I just got back into ketosis yesterday and will guard that with everything I have. I plan to stay in ketosis and drop some pounds.

    I also have a doctor's appointment coming up in a couple of weeks where I plan to talk to him about insulin resistance. If he doesn't have the answers I am looking for, I will ask him to refer me to someone who might be more of a specialist on those issues. I'm so certain that there has to be something there that I am missing. I just am not sure what it is and really want to find out.

    Hyperinsulinemia is something I need to look into a little more closely too. Thanks for the education.

    Week 3 Day 4

    I had a close one yesterday with my lunch at Tony Roma’s with 45 net carbs for the day. I kept track today and stayed in ketosis. While I had a few thoughts of eating something I shouldn’t, it was not like having a craving. The good news is today I had 14 net carbs, and I am still on track. But, now is when I need to be extra careful about not getting sucked down into carb creep.

    I need to start being more careful. I had one cup of coffee today, and coffee is a problem for me. Am I starting to slip? I think my background says yes. But, otherwise I had a good day.

    Tomorrow I will make a point of repeating my motto:

    Stay on the path, to lose the fat!

    It’s days like today that remind me that I have hyperinsulinemia. One of my trigger times is coming home from work and wanting to stop to buy junk food. Today was that day. I just kept telling myself “Stay on the path, to lose the fat” and “Just get home without stopping and you’ll be okay.” I got home without stopping, and yes I am okay.

    I keep hearing that if I eat low carb, I won’t have cravings. But, that isn’t quite right for everyone.

    What are some other sayings or motivation techniques being used while away from home?

    I keep telling myself that if I have to take this ten minutes at a time I CAN and will do it.
    I have also been telling myself that this body is not going to win. The person inside, the one who is me, the one who makes the decisions will win. And I will win.

    You know, I use positive imaging to help.
    At night, when the lights are out and my eyes are closed but I am not asleep, I imagine pulling in all the positive energy that is out there. I imagine this positive energy helping me get through this period of time. I see the positive energy helping me win this battle and I enjoy the feeling of losing the weight even though I have yet to loose it. I allow myself to see all these positive things happening like making the right food decisions and not giving into cravings. i allow myself and encourage myself to actually feel how good it feels to be able to loose the weight in a healthy way. By then I'm usually asleep

    But this is how I usually end my days and I feel like it makes me so much stronger for the next day especially if I get up in the morning and say thank you for all the positive images I was able to enjoy. I also tell myself I will pursue only positive food choices for that day.

    You asked, That's what I do. Positive energy draws positive energy just like negativity draws negativity. Think Positive.

    It sure helps me. I figure what can it hurt. I learned this method while taking care of my daughter at MD Anderson hospital. They teach it to patients there and they say it actually puts the patients in a good frame of mind to help with cancer treatment.

    My daughter would use this image technique daily and actually found it somewhat comical. She would envision the cancer and the terrible things she would do to beat it up. She survived 8 years and 78 rounds of chemo. She made medical history and lived longer than most do with Synovial Sarcoma. Fact is, no one has survived synovial sarcoma that I am aware of.

    I learned so much from her.

    It works. People should try it. I can't tell you what a difference it makes. It is very similar indeed to "The Secret" If you have never read that you should do so. Positive energy feels so good.

    I have lost 7 pounds and am at 170!

    I rewarded myself with poultry shears. I broke the handle on my last pair a few weeks ago. I also bought two small broiler racks. Now that I have started making homemade chicken wings, these tools will make it easier and hopefully the wings will be more crispy.

    I've had no problems with cravings today.

    Today is Week 4 and Day 1!

    Week 3, also known as "hell week," is finally over. I have fell off the wagon so many times during week 3 that I can't remember if week 4 is going to be better or worse. Oh well, we'll find out.

    I am defining “fell off the wagon” as meaning I stopped being in ketosis.

    Just ordered The New Atkins For A New You. Have you read it? I'm anxious to get it. I understand there is new information in there involving ketosis. Can't wait to get it. Found it cheap on ebay.

    I am sticking to my diet really well. Not cheating at all and got my carbs down low. I also quit worrying about ketosis. I figure that if I do my part that the rest will follow. My head wants to lose this weight. My body is resisting. However, since My head is in full control of what I put in my mouth right now, my body will just have to get with the program. I lost an inch in my waist this week and an inch in my hips. Dropped four pounds but added one back on this morning. I was down nine lbs and now I'm down 8. I will make this work. I am so determined that I will win this battle.

    I'm so happy that you too have lost some weight. Keep at it and we will just keep prodding ourselves into thinness.

    The last Atkins book I bought was "The All-New Atkins Advantage" (2008) by Trager and Heimowitz. I keep going back to "Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution" (2002). I decided to stick with Dr. Atkin's advice and forget the others. Dr. Atkin's book seems to have all the answers to my questions, if I just keep reviewing the book when I have a problem.

    We WILL make it one day at a time.

    they say this one has some new stuff. Not sure what is new because I haven't received it yet. I'm curious and would like to know what could possibly be new. I think I have all of his other books and I too keep going back to the Diet Revolution.

    I do like the new book. For me it explained the whole program alot better (with more specifics about how much to eat and exactly what to eat). The new book is also more realistic about expectations.
    I also like that the new book addresses both sides of the calorie issue. While you are indeed counting net carbs calories cannot be ignored. The old books would say eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed--sort of assuming that most people would be satisfied with eating a gazillion calories. The old books also were written before people knew alot about stavation mode.
    The new book does give a specific calorie range, protein range and a specific amount for "foundation" veggies.
    I really think that helpd me, but I'm still trying to figure out a good balance.

    AND the menue plans in the book are helpful--especially for adding carbs back in OWL (not that I'm there yet)

    See, I have to explain that I have a hard time accepting the theory of starvation mode. I had gastric bypass. My surgeon left my stomach pouch the size of his thumb. I was definitely in starvation mode. But I gotta tell you. It didn't take my body long to catch on to what was going on and follow suit. I lost over 200 lbs in starvation mode. I know it is important to a lot of folks on here but I have to stay true to what I know and what I know is this: for me, my body catches on and begins dropping weight like crazy. It never actually shut down my weight loss. It didn't make me totally unhealthy because the foods I was getting were healthy along with protein drinks and amino acid drinks all prescribed of course. So although I know starvation mode is scary for some, it just is not something I think truly exists. I see it as a myth. Now remember I'm talking about me. I am not advising others to think the way I do or to eat the way I do. These are only my beliefs. Even though they don't seem to conform to the NORM, sometimes. They are my beliefs.

    I still can't wait to read the new book.

    Connie I think we might be twins!! LOL!! I too am gluten intolerant but not to the extent that I have to be obsessive about avoiding it, I'm also a bit lactose intolerant and I am such a sucker for carb creep (great term for it btw!). I had great success with Atkins about 12 years ago and on and off I've kept to a fairly low carb lifestyle since, but stressful times have sent me into carb creep - such as when I was doing my doctorate thesis, when i had my daughter and was breastfeeding, and then I had a few miscarriages too which led to a bit too much comfort eating. I got back into sport 3 years ago and have been better with my diet, so i've lost about a stone. but recently I've been stuck and I want to lose a bit more. I just can't seem to stop cheating on the carbs though. How did you persuade yourself to really get back to induction and stick to it? You seem to be doing so well just now.

    First, let me say that there is a distinction between being intolerant and having an allergy. I have a dairy allergy because about 12 hours after eating dairy, I get congested and my nose starts running. I do not get horrible stomach cramps and diarrhea from dairy. For me, ice cream is my favorite food and summer is coming! If I eat more fat in my diet, I have a better chance of resisting ice cream.

    I am not certain if I have an allergy or am intolerant from gluten but my belly bloats about 12 hours after I eat it. Once I understood that this is HARMFUL INFLAMMATION, it was easier for me to stop making meals with gluten. I am my own cook and am in control of what I eat.

    And, you can see that both of my problems cause inflammation. Many people say they have lost “water weight” when they first start a diet, and then they dismiss it as being unimportant. (I was one of those people.) But, it is the first step in healing the body and a very important one for people who have inflammation problems.

    So, I get back into induction by telling myself I am healing my inflamed and damaged body. Also, I had restless leg syndrom for about 20 years before I started Atkins in 2010. It cured my restess leg syndrom, and I’ll never take the chance of having that again.

    I’m not doing quite as well as you might think. I mentioned at the beginning of the thread that I believe it takes at least 6 weeks to change habits. I am only in week 4, and everyday I have to give my full attention to what I am eating. It is my top priority. I know I should be exercising but I am letting that slide for now. I am a stress eater and must be careful.

    I hope this gives you some ideas. And, you are welcome to start telling other people in this thread about your journey of how you are combating carb creep. And anyone else who is struggling with carb creep is welcome to tell their story.

    I haven't had as many cravings this week as during the third week. This is a good thing. I think it will get easier from now on, but I still have danger times that I must be looking for.

    I actually did not have as many cravings during week 4 as I did during week 3.

    Now, I need to be extra careful about those “sneaky environmental triggers” that are a problem for me.

    I almost ruined myself yesterday. Drinking wine sometimes doesn’t cause me problems and sometimes it makes me want to eat, eat, eat. Yesterday, I had some wine at lunch and wanted to eat, eat, eat. I needed to go to the health food store but I really wanted to go to a restaurant for supper so I could satisfy my cravings. I am proud of myself because I talked myself into driving the car to the store. I made a deal with myself that I could get a frozen dessert if I didn’t stop at a restaurant. While I may have eaten too much frozen coconut milk, the carbs were nothing compared to going to a restaurant.

    Today, I am still in ketosis. Atkins says to get “deep into ketosis.” I think this is one example of why to do that.

    Think of frozen coconut milk as being vegan ice cream. It tasted very good, and I bought it in a health food store.

    It was a product called "So Delicious Dairy Free." I got the mini bars that come on a stick. The website for the products is called www.TurtleMountain.com.

    Now that you mention this, I bet there must be frozen coconut milk recipes on the internet. I'll have to give this idea a web search one of these days.
