Doesn't Crossfit involve a coach?
-
No to Crossfit. Except it might work if you made friends there and feel pressured to keep going. But the only way I have succeeded is by finding a workout program (stronglifts/starting strength) that I enjoyed (because the results are almost immediate) and getting into a habit. Motivation is only good for a short time. You…

Some day I hope I'm strong enough to front squat that much.

A cheaper option would be to buy wrist/ankle weights. I got a pair of 2.5-lb. weights that each have two sandbags. I remove on of the sandbags from each and have 1.25-lb weights. Bought them from Amazon.

In most cases, if you gain weight you always gain muscle and if you lose weight you always lose muscle. The question is how do you maximize the ratio of muscle to fat when you gain weight and minimize the ratio when you lose weight.

If I were you I would go to marksdailyapple.com and use the search engine. Your comments make me afraid for you. I'll be praying FWIW.

By the way, don't try to only do only the presses. because you are concerned about your upper body. Squats and deadlifts build your back and abs. Also you will change your smaller muscles faster if you work your bigger ones.

Go to a gym that has child care. Get someone to show you how to barbell squat, deadlift, overhead press, and bench press. Go on nonconsecutive days and add weight to the bar. You will change your life. There is a forum for "stronglifts" for women somewhere in these communities. In my opinion 5 sets of 5 is overkill and I…

Fitocracy for lifting

http://youtu.be/QeTZ3uowNb0 I was asking about longer rests between workouts. Lifting as heavy as you can IS among the greatest of ideas.

Out of curiosity: What supplements?

The lesson seems to be that volume may become a problem but don't invent problems before the occur.
-
I vote habit. You need motivation for three months. After that missing the gym becomes a painful experience.

Thanks. I don't typically think of myself as old. Before the stroke I would say I was stronger than ever before in my life. I was doing 50 squats in 5 sets with a minute between sets in addition to my heavier work. But I heard interview that warned against "middle aged" lifters doing too much volume. I let it get in my…

I was going to write something about not pressuring her, but others have said it better than I could. I'm glad you're doing such a good job with her.

For what it's worth I had your problem at first with both the back squat (Low bar) and front squat. In both cases, starting with the empty bar and just working on doing them gradually gave me more flexibility. At first, my hands were so wide on the back squat that when I racked the bar, I had to lift my hands to avoid…

There are lots of people who didn't lose weight until they cut back on sugar in all it's forms and suddenly gained control of their appetites and metabolism. That doesn't totally contradict CICO but it brings it in reach of many people. When I was 20 I lost weight counting calories and drinking soda. When I was in my…

Don't delete the post! This thread made me very happy! All that encouragement was really nice.

Are there no magical foods? If you find stuff you can eat and it makes you feel great and not need to eat again for a long time, and feel energized, then you might consider that food to be "magical" compared to the stuff that tasted good but made you feel like garbage and left you hungry again in half an hour. People are…

Feature. Not bug.

I use it. But basically any healthy food that satiates your appetite so that you don't feel the desire to eat more often can help in that way (there is a possible additional benefit, see below). I used butter and coconut oil in my coffee in the morning and then didn't eat anything else until at least 2pm. By that method,…

I've been tracking this thread on and off because I'm not "there" yet but hope to be... but a thought just occurred to me. Perhaps it has already been asked and answered. If so, sorry I missed it. Here's my question: Does one's body composition affect one's calorie requirements? I seem to remember that muscle burns more…

It all depends on how you define "cheat." From a calorie standpoint, there might be some meal you would like and it won't allow you to keep your deficit, so you might eat up to maintenance. But some views of healthy eating involve ideas of what should be predominate in your diet whether or not you count calories. Paleo and…
-
Again, I don't know what you are defining as healthy. But I would eat whole eggs and ask for extra cheese and dump the toast (which, if dry, would make me gag anyway). Tomatoes are probably fine, though I often skip them to keep my carb count as low as possible.
-
If you want low calorie you just get a portion that is right for you. When I go there to eat healthy I eat meat and eggs and avoid toast, grits, waffles (dig the irony) or any other form of excess sugar. I drink water and black coffee. That way I don't have an insulin surge that messes up my day and leaves me hungry soon…

If you are hungry you should eat. Especially after hard workouts. You need to track your intake and figure out how to do it at the level you want. But if you're out of calories for the day and you are hungry after a workout, I think you should decide to exceed your calories and figure out how to do it differently for the…

Youtube is your friend. Search terms to not miss: stronglifts squat barbell squat low bar barbell squat -- (some people prefer high bar and even if low bar is as great as Mark Rippetoe claims the high bar squat is still better than nothing) rippetoe deadlift -- (Ignore any video that starts this exercise from standing. You…

Why don't you do Crossfit until you like the way you look and then quit for something less strenuous? People change their diets to some degree in "maintenance." The same can be done with exercise. In my opinion, your words indicate that you are sabotaging a solution to one problem by imagining another one. If you really…

Well, I can probably start practicing hang cleans in a squat cage with just the bar... My gym just doesn't have bumper plates. And thank you, @emilia777 for articulating what I feel, even without having learned any Olympic lifts yet. The barbell is an amazing piece of technology. It has made me go places in my late forties…
