  • Lose the artificial sweeteners. They screw with your insulin sensitivity, and mess up your metabolism. Shock your system with some intermittent fasting, and try things like fasted cardio to boost your fat burn. Lift weights - and lift heavy. Heavy resistance training builds muscle and burns more fat over time.
  • What's your calorie goal? How are you breaking that down by protein/carbs/etc? Activity level? Current height/weight? Despite what the naysayers will tell you, it is entirely possible to meet this goal, if you do it right.
  • Does my profile pic count as cosplay?
  • 36.09... not bad, but I feel like I can do better. :)
  • I use MapMyFitness - only had it mess up the measurement really bad once. Helps that I have straight, flat roads to run on here in the desert, and a clear GPS signal on my smartphone. :) Getting under 40 was a big deal for me... I'm really hoping I can hit 36 and change this week...
  • My third 5k is this weekend... kind of worried I haven't made much in the way of improvement since my last one. :s
  • Doing the Redneck Run 5k this weekend in Glendale - anyone else going?
  • Always use the rack. There are good videos on the Stronglifts website to demonstrate proper form. Watch them. Even when you're starting out and lifting light, it is important to practice and learn good form.
  • When people ask me how I lose weight without being hungry all the time...
  • What she said. The belly fat is usually the last to go, but it *will* go. Your calorie intake is fine. Not sure what else you're doing, but I'd suggest moderate amounts of cardio, and I absolutely agree that the strength training is your best bet.
  • Google "Stronglifts 5x5" and give that program a shot. Remember, your only competition is in the mirror.
  • Strength training. Google "Stronglifts 5x5" and give it a shot. Squats, deadlifts, barbell rows - those will all improve your upper and lower back strength, and give you better posture.
  • Yes, many men and women can lose weight on 2000 calories a day; but we're talking about a man that is already reasonably fit, doing cardio, trying to lose weight. Likewise, 1600-1900 is enough to not necessarily raise any alarms about undernourishment. I think it is somewhat disingenuous to tell someone stuck in a plateau…
  • I was 300 pounds in September when I decided to quit drinking Mt. Dew - I drank at LEAST 4 a day. I lost 30 pounds in the first month. I did no other exercise. I changed nothing else in my diet. That *kitten* is KILLING you. It's so damned bad for you. I'll be honest; I quit cold turkey, and I was miserable, moody, and a…
  • In other words, he's done nothing but watch a lot of porn prior to marrying you, and he's since discovered real sex isn't like the movies. He's a child. You need to move on. It's not your job to raise him.
  • I dunno, maybe the fact that, as a grown man myself, I've lost weight consuming in that same calorie range while running 20 miles a week? He's trying to lose weight. Good on him for not being a cupcake about it and eating all his calories back. Honestly, I think it's a bit delusional to think that you can crush 2200…
  • I don't think the calorie intake is your problem - you're well within a range that will lose weight based on your activity level. At this point, I would suggest mixing in some strength training - have a look at the Stronglifts 5x5 program. It's easy, requires very little time, and is pretty effective.
  • I just got a new squat rack.
  • What's your daily calorie consumption? How much do you currently weigh? How tall are you? What's you're activity level? There's a number of reasons to have a plateau; I've run into a number of them. They're terribly frustrating, and there's often not one "silver bullet" to solve them; sometimes all it takes is doing…
  • The OTC stuff is not necessarily ineffective; it just won't overcome the need for better eating habits and more exercise for you. Simply put, many of them are just some combination of caffeine and B-vitamins. They give you a boost of energy and make you feel better. That CAN help if you're looking for a little kick to get…
  • Stop crying! You're making me feel bad!
  • I apologize if I come across too bluntly; I did not mean to lack empathy. I cannot fathom the uncertainty you must feel regarding the impending surgery; I've never had any surgical procedure aside from having an ingrown toenail removed. But I can relate to the weight loss bit. I was heavy in my early 20's... lost it all…
  • First, you're still a "weight loss surgery patient." It sort of seems odd that you would lose that support group just because, you know, you're at risk of major medical problems, possibly even death, because it must be reversed. Second, bypass is no guarantee, either. Plenty of people have had the surgery, lost weight, and…
  • If you're just starting out on a low-carb diet, you may feel tired at first while your body shifts from burning carbs (and the resulting sugars) to fat and protein, but after you've been on it for a while, energy is not a big issue. I generally avoid carbs where I can, getting them as often as possible only from…
  • I was never a runner. I've hated running ever since I was a kid. I was always slow. Born with flat feet and a lousy natural stride. I was never as fast as any of my friends, and I loathed running. I enjoyed sports, but played the ones that didn't require me to outrace anyone. I played catcher in baseball. In football, I…
  • What he said. I train for 5k's, largely because they are easy races to bring the family along with; I can run at my pace and not have to wait too long for those who'd rather walk. My exercise runs are 4 miles, 2-3 days a week right now. As my pace improves, I will likely stretch to 5. Right now I don't have any…
  • I've lost weight at 25, and I'm doing it again at 40. It was ABSOLUTELY easier at 25. It's absurd to think age isn't a factor at all. HOWEVER - at 40, I also have enough wisdom and experience to overcome the biological hurdles, and scoff at anything that might be used as an excuse to underperform. It it harder? Yes.…
  • I'm trying to see if I can use the gym at the local high school. That's a lot closer than my nearest commercial gym.
  • I'm a long way from getting anywhere near that time; what's nice is that distance is pretty family-friendly for those of us with kids and spouses that just want to take a walking pace.
