  • Just chiming in to agree with another poster who said that, if your plan requires you to be perfect, it isn’t a good plan. It’s easier said than done to stick with something long term. I think the most important thing to grasp in this weight loss/weight management/ fitness thing is that it’s LIFE LONG. I can get to my…
  • I love this place. I started here in 2015, and discovering the logic of calories and deficits was a game changer. And then switching my focus from cardio to weightlifting... but that’s another story. Happy mfp anniversary!
  • I am a sugar monster. I eat gummy bears and chocolate every day... but I only eat 2-4 gummy bears a day, and/or one square (Lindt, 50 cal/square) a day. I eat them really slowly. I usually have a small piece of cake with my lunch. If I can eat a little of the things I love on a daily or almost daily basis, I don’t feel…
  • Motivation is pretty fleeting. It’s easy to be gung-ho about things at the beginning, but it’s when things get tedious that lots of people give up or start sliding. You just gotta grind. And slog. And realize that’s your reality if you want to succeed. I haven’t been to the gym in nearly two weeks (my usual is 4x per week)…
  • You need a reminder? It is burned into my memory that there is a bag of chips in the cupboard, next to some chocolate bars, and ice cream in the freezer. I am ALWAYS aware that they are there WAiTING FOR ME. 😆(sobs)
  • My step mother was awful with guilting me into eating calorie-laden food. I fought with her for years about how much I ate while going over to see my dad. After the meal, she’d force leftovers on me - which I threw away once I got home. I hated throwing away food, but one gravy-cheese-sauce-carby-breaded-and-fried-meat…
  • I can’t imagine living with MORE than a 250-300 calorie deficit. I love food too much and I get hangry enough as it is on my more active days. I have no idea how much you want to lose, but, chip away at it! My whoosh finally happened today, after a month of feeling like the weigh and log game was a waste of time.
  • I haven’t figured out how to bold things in quotes, but I gotta say how much I appreciate that last paragraph. It made me tear up. I really respect what you have to say on these forums, so... sheesh. Thank-you!
  • Thank-you. Edit to add: Keeping knees warm and out of a draft is difficult to do during arctic fieldwork. I will have to make myself a knee warmer to add to my arsenal of tundra fashion. I HAVE been wondering how much of it is temperature related.
  • One of those hugs on your comment is from me. I am going to cut ‘n paste it elsewhere so that I can find it more easily. Someone suggested it might be arthritis, but it’s been giving me problems for years already. I thought for sure I must be too young to have arthritis! I started doing some pretty intense fieldwork four…
  • Sigh. I am 44 and just found out today that I have arthritis in my knee. I am really active and my knee has been slowing me down for years already. This feels like a nail in the coffin. Wrong thread? Sorry for being a Debbie Downer. Any wisdom/advice?
  • How many extra Calories do you eat on a cheat day? Are you eating so much that you’re wiping out that week’s deficit? I have cheat days too, but the extra calories I eat are what I’d eat if I was maintaining so they don’t set me back. Maybe instead of cheat day, try eating at maintenance instead?
  • Congratulations! It’s funny how people have their different moments where it “clicks”.
  • Twenty pounds is nothing to scoff at. I feel better after losing ten! Do what works for you. If twenty pounds a year - and keeping it off- is ehat works for you? Awesome. And congrats on keeping the weight off!
  • I din’t believe there is a set weight that our body likes. We just need to learn better eating habits and learn how to eat a proper number of calories. If you don’t weight your food already, buy a scale and weigh and log everything you eat. Set a modest deficit (i prefer 0.5 a pound per week) so you don’t feel deprived.…
  • Yes. I am at the very top of the BMI range for my height, and while I could lose more weight, I am pretty muscular. I feel I would look too thin if I lost 20 pounds. Is this because it has been a long time since I’ve been that thin? Not sure. I want to lose a few pounds to get to my goal weight and then reassess. Maybe…
  • Every pound is a win. Looking at the whole amount is overwhelming. I also break it down into five pound mini goals. You can do this. Set up your deficit so that it isn’t the most aggressive. I know it’ll take longer, but it will also make life more liveable and weight loss less of a punishment. If you allow yourself SOME…
  • Welcome back! So sorry to bear about your dad. Commit to your health. For your family, but also for yorself!
  • ^^This. I try to be reasonable with my choices - most of the time. Life without sweets would make me sad, so I make them a part of my choices. I’ve made a choice to cut out carbonated drinks and juice - because they don’t sustain me. It’s an easy choice for me because I never developed a taste for either, and I’ve also…
  • This. And, if I have a bad day, I can just continue again tomorrow.
  • Sigh. Last week I was 1.8 (ish) pounds from my goal weight. I overdid it at the gym on Monday, and now my knee is swollen (it’s a chronic problem -stupid knee). The scale rewarded me by jumping up THREE pounds and it has held there all week. ☹️ I KNOW it’s impossible for me to have gained that much weight, but come on!…
  • Thanks! I’m about 2 pounds away! 😬
  • Someday I am going to branch out amd try some fancy protein flavours. I am really boring and only buy the vanilla ones.
  • I am going to have to try this!!
  • Thankyou for keeping me in the dark! I shall not check out said dairy case! Sigh.
  • Canadian here. I have never had B & J. I can’t even say for certain if we have it here. From the sounds of it, it’s in my interest to NOT find out if we do!
  • I am also female, 5’8” and my goal weight is 165. 🙂 Not judging your goals, but your weight right now is pretty close to the healthy range for your height. As such, it’s unrealistic to expect such a dramatic loss in such a short time. Celebrate the loss of a pound! Unless you are obese, losing six pounds in a week is not…
  • All those foods you want to binge on? You can still have them while losing weight - just less of them. You don’t have to say goodbye to them, you just have to fit them in at a reasonable amount. You aren’t alone with this struggle, and you aren’t pathetic. I love my cakes and burgers and potato chips, but I no longer eat…
  • I have nothing but respect for people who get up the courage to go to fitness classes. I’m the one in class who looks fit(ish) but lacks balance and coordination and gets lost right from the start. We are all learning, some of us have just had more practice. And sometimes the biggest muscle heads in the gym are also the…
