  • smith machine isn't completely useless, but like every machine it is less effective than free weights because it stabilizes itself instead of your core having to do that. you can bench/squat much more weight on a smith machine than you can with free weights

  • are you eating healthy foods? it sounds like weight gain is pretty much as simple as being in a calorie surplus (consuming more than your body is burning). to gain muscle lift weight and consume lots of protein and calories and a good amount of fat. either eat more or eat higher calorie items

  • One thing i've found that can be helpful if you're a night eater is to brush your teeth right after what's supposed to be your last meal instead of right before bed. The weird taste will hopefully discourage you from at least salty treats.
