  • I focus on taste and high fiber content and not as much on added sugar. The one I like (Heritage Flakes) has 5 gm of added sugar per 1 cup serving. Lost 20 pounds eating it every morning.
  • Moderation in all things. Including sugar!
  • Exercise is so important to health, though. You can be a normal weight and still unhealthy. SOME form of moderate exercise, doesn’t matter what, done consistently, is crucial to your long-term health. Don’t just focus on your appearance.
  • Alcohol consumption has been linked to increased risk of heart disease and certIn types of cancers, along with other health issues. While I love wine and cocktails, I limit myself to special occasions (and my recent vacation in France). Side benefit is that it definitely helps with weight loss and maintenance.
  • I set my goal to a weight I looked good at when I was younger. Then decided to lose three more pounds so I’d have a bit of wiggle room in maintenance. Unintentionally lost two more than that. Then went on vacation in France, got sick once I was home, then had oral surgery, and have gained 4 pounds back. So those “wiggle…
  • It takes me 2-3 months to lose 10 pounds, and it is DEFINITELY not effort-free. You may find that as you get older, this strategy will stop working for you.
  • My transition was painless...initially lost two more pounds after reaching goal. I’m looking at my new lower weight as part of an overall health strategy. At 59, I have risk factors for colon cancer and heart disease, so I am very highly motivated to keep my weight where it is. Very healthy eating (except for indulgences…
  • We live in a rural area that doesn’t have trick or treating (there’s a trunk or treat on Main St. instead) so there’s no Halloween candy in my house. For Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, I don’t indulge in all the goodies except for the day of the holiday itself. I work from home now so it’s a lot easier. When I…
  • At 120-ish (on vacation in France, so not weighing)
  • Here’s a “boo” for menopause...just had bloodwork done, and my cholesterol is high, specifically my “bad” cholesterol. This happens in menopause due to reduced estrogen, among other things. I’m not happy, since I already limit meat/saturated fat, alcohol, commerical baked goods and just lost about 20 pounds while…
  • I spent 2 weeks in France in Sept., eating all the cheese, bread, desserts and pastries, and drinking wine. Gained maybe 2 pounds because of how much walking we did. Got sick immediately after getting home and then had oral surgery, with the result that I am only now getting back to my normal eating and workout routine. I…
  • I’ve been eating 1-3 eggs most days for several months. Just found out my “bad” cholesterol is high. I know there’s LOTS of conflicting info on whether eating foods high in cholesterol raises your blood cholesterol, but the American Heart Assn recommends 4-6 eggs per week, so I'm going to cut back. I’m in maintenance so…
  • Mine is 1560 and I’m thrilled, actually. I was at 1300 to lose and MFP set me at 1450 for maintenance. So I get 110 more thN that PLUS exercise calories. My maintenance might be a bit higher, I am new to maintenance and still tracking and adjusting.
  • Incorporate weights and do them BEFORE the treadmill if you are doing both during the same gym session.
  • So, if chicken loses water when cooked (let’s assume it was baked without adding ANYTHING to it), doesn’t it make sense to weigh it after cooking? Wouldn’t you want the “true” weight after cooking out the water? Why would you choose higher weight/calories if it’s just due to water?
  • My waist. I’m blessed with a small waist that gives me a very feminine shape. It is one of the first places I lose weight. Runner up is my hair, which has always been thick and shiny (although I suck at styling it in anything beyond the basic look you see in my profile pic).
  • I don’t know how to make words in the post above bolded, but what jumped out at me was the last line: “I guess I could also go back to weighing my food.” Just gonna take a guess here, but perhaps even after six years of maintenance you’ve begun underestimating calories/overestimating portions?
  • If you drink enough water, fiber shouldn’t cause gastrointestinal distress. Fiber is very important to your overall health, especially colon health. MikePTY is right that it won’t help you lose weight and may or may not help you feel full longer.

  • If I hiked 25 miles with 6000 gain (unless it was over a week-long backpack or something) I wouldn’t even be logging, I would happily be eating whatever I wanted!
  • Congrats! But why do you have a watermelon on the floor of your bedroom?
  • When I set out to lose weight, I was already at a healthy BMI for my height (5” 4.5”) but right on the border of overweight. I was indeed healthy but felt very pudgy. I’m now at a weight I hadn’t seen since my 20s (I’m 59), and am right in the middle of the BMI “healthy” range. I wish I’d done this earlier, I always…
  • 2 minutes a day to track might be true for you, but it’s not for everyone, especially if you are cooking for others, if you are making recipes you haven’t added in the recipe builder yet, or if you are eating out where they don’t list calories on the menu and are trying to find equivalents or estimate the calories of what…
  • I noticed after 5 lbs. huge difference in how my clothes fit.
  • Start lifting now. I began lifting even before I began eating at a deficit, and all during. It has made an amazing difference in how I look, and I started light and added weight veerrryyy slowly (I’m talking maybe two pounds a week added to the weights I was lifting. Sometimes two pounds every TWO weeks!). It should…
  • I’m going to Paris and would like to look as skinny as possible while there (this trip is the entire reason I was inspired to lose 18 pounds!). Minimizing bloat from water retention would be nice. I’ve got the compression socks, I think I may try lower carb and salt for the 2 days prior if I can. Although it might be an…
  • I’ve heard one of the best options at McD’s is a regular burger or even cheeseburger, without fries. Those salads can be calorie bombs. Don’t know if The posted cals are correct; they are probably off by some percentage, I doubt they are exact.
  • It’s human nature, unfortunately. We covet what others have. I have a friend who began losing weight late last year and my initial reaction was a bit of jealousy and anxiety (not expressed to her, just private feelings) because I felt I also needed to lose a few pounds. I refocused that negative energy into my own weight…
  • I just started maintenance and am weighing every day until I am certain what my maintenance calories are.
  • I’m thrilled to maintain at 1560. MFP gave me 1450 but I kept losing. For me, it’s helpful to know that I still need to eat quite mindfully and still track and log everything, because I don’t get that many cals as before. Keeps me from that “yippee, I’m in maintenance now I can eat whatever I want” trap.
