  • christinev297, I think everyone can benefit from heart rate monitoring if your trying to control weight. The reason is that your body adjusts to exercise, and a HRM gives you the data to tell you that. For example about 3 months ago I started using the Stairmaster. I burned about 180 calories in 10 minutes on it. My speed…
  • I must be one of the few Microsoft Band lovers out there. Many people complain about it not being comfortable. But its made to be adjusted. I wear it loose most of the time, and when I exercise I tighten it up. The clasp is designed to work this way. It syncs well with MFP now (used to be an issue). I use it with an…
  • Based on your profile and weight lost so far you probably have more to teach me than I have you! The body you describe is probably just a function of height & weight. As with lots of folks that lose a LOT of weight when you do finally reach goal you may need some cosmetic surgery to deal with extra skin. The fat reduces,…
  • You're above what health experts would consider a healthy weight. Using BMI as a guide 156 is the maximum "healthy" weight for someone your height. Now your'e not very far away from that, and people's bodies are different so you might be closer to healthy than the 10lbs difference. I'd suggest that you start modestly. Just…
  • Debubble's advice to start slow is really good. Many people want to lose 3-4 lbs a week and get dejected when they don't. That kind of thinking is like saying I want to learn do drive, I think I'll try an 18 wheeler first. Set modest goals, work to achieve them, then ramp it up. I started by walking 2 mile hikes on…

  • Welcome! Hope you have a great time meeting your goals!
  • Welcome! MFP isn't magic, but it does work. Ask a lot of questions, the community likes to help out!
  • Welcome to MFP! Not much for recipes. Just saying hi!
  • Congrats on not giving up and welcome back!
  • Welcome to MFP. Plateaus do indeed suck! Busted one a month ago and its now melting off. Good luck with yours.
  • Welcome aboard! Good luck reaching your goals.
  • Welcome! Best of luck reaching your goals!
  • Welcome! Weighing is kind of a personal choice. You should definitely weigh on some kind of basis, as it will keep you honest, accountable, and also provide some motivation. I do it daily, but that's not for a lot of people. You body can swing up and down quite a bit and if you think you might freak out seeing the scale…

  • Welcome! Best of luck on reaching your goals!
  • Welcome! There is a great number of positive people here that can be part of your journey.
  • Welcome! I use a Microsoft Band, not fitbit, but for me it has really help me understand how my body burns calories. MFP has been great to help me understand what my food intake is like. My old eating habits had me eating about 2500 calories a day. I had no idea that was the case though. No I know what a healthy portion of…
  • Kgantshom, Each KG of weight you need to lose requires you to burn 7700 calories more than you eat. Your daily burn without doing any exercise is probably about 1700 calories if you're lightly active. The lowest safe calorie intake is 1200 a day. Less than that and your body thinks it's being starved and it will lower your…
  • Welcome! So my goal was to not only lose weight, but to learn how to eat what I like as I did it so that once I reach my goal I stay there. So I eat most things that I used to eat, just in much smaller portions. The one adjustment that I've really made is to eliminate things that are really bad calorie bargains that don't…
  • Good luck! I'm trying to gain muscle mass as well as lose a lot of weight. It is possible! But not easy ;-) Good luck!
  • Welcome! Good luck!

  • This is set in your "health" app on your iPhone. Open the Health app (white icon with a heart). Click on "sources" at the bottom of the screen. Select "MyFitnessPal". Then scroll down to the "Allow MyFitnessPal to read data" section and un-check "Workouts". Of course translate to your local language. My Finnish/Sweedish?!?…
  • This is the guided set-up link: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/change_goals_guided I think it will help you at least set your calorie goals. Not sure it will set your Macros.
  • Want some motivation??? I'm you in 20 years! About the same starting weight, but I'm a few months ahead of you and so a few pounds ahead as well. MFP does work, if you let it! But man it is work. Good luck reaching your goal!
  • Welcome! Not from Jersey, just saying hi!
  • I use a heart rate monitor that does calorie estimation. I can't run (bad knees), so it's hard to say how many miles it is. But part of my routine is 10 minutes on the Stairmaster and it reports 0.9 miles, and 20 minutes on the elliptical and it reports about 2.2 miles. So yeah 70-80 minutes should be about 9-10 miles…
  • I hope 30lbs has at least made your clothes fit better! 20lbs made me go from XXL to XL. 20lbs more has meant that XL is loose on me. Still have 40 more to go to be officially not "overweight"! But progress is progress. Oh and having to up the workouts... sad to say that's 100% normal and just how it works :/
  • Most MFP folks are here to lose (as am I!). Have you discovered bodybuilding.com? Many more folks looking to bulk there. Not that you can't stay here... but more ideas will come to you there.
  • How about a little science to solve this problem? Not all sugar is the same. Some sugars are very quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, other sugars are slower to enter. Think of some as a shot of tequila, and others as a beer. Same alcohol, but that shot goes in a lot faster :) When sugar enters the bloodstream your body…
  • While SezxyStef is technically correct, for some people their body will lower there metabolism to such a point that the necessary calorie deficit to lose weight by food restriction alone is dangerous, and might be mentally impossible. I know for me that if I don't exercise I can maintain my weight on 1500 calories a day.…
