  • Ooh, fun! I'll figure out exactly how "friends" work and then a request you shall receive. Thanks so much for responding --
  • This is an interesting web site -- hadn't heard of it before. That's a very reasonable price and the support sounds good. You're really doing great!!!
  • There may be more than one way that works -- I linked Fitstar to the Fitbit only and that seems to have made the appropriate calorie adjustment in MFP. Thanks so much for letting me know what works for you -- I'll keep an eye on this combination for a day or two, then good to know I can adjust if needed.
  • Ah, yes -- the "try it and see" approach -- sounds like a great plan -- way better than the amount of time I've spent obsessing over the whole subject. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond --
  • Is it possible you have a "VivoSmart HR" instead of a VivoFit? If you do, there was a software update which changed the BMR in the VS-HR to "coma level" with no multiplier, and it has thrown MFP off. See the Garmin forums here -- https://forums.garmin.com/forum.php -- and look for the VivoSmart HR section under Health and…
  • Great suggestions all -- thank you so much! I found an app called "Rock My Run," which lets me sort of zone out and makes the time go faster. I am gradually increasing time, and when I get a little more proficient, will definitely add in intervals. It's still the only fun cardio I've ever done, though, so that's a good…
  • Thanks so much for the info! Good to have another vote that the test and calculator were nearly the same. The active metabolic test sounds very interesting -- bet it was grueling! I've learned so much from reading about fitness here on MFP -- thanks to all who take the time to answer questions!!
  • Thanks to you both for taking the time to comment. I think you're both right, especially since I'm losing a little along, and I'll skip the test for now. Thank you again!
  • Great suggestion -- thanks! Volunteering is always good, and if there's walking involved, well, that's definitely a "win-win."
  • Robert - thank you for your great post, and for the encouragement! You sound like me -- love the data -- and I'm definitely keeping track of time, effort, etc. I'm making some progress and it's still the most fun ever! I've moved recently and am not confident walking outside alone -- wish I were braver, as there are so…
  • I do daily, and, yes, weights vary. But I use the app Happy Scale (see Malibu927's suggestions above for others) and watch the weight trending downward, and for the first time ever I don't let the variations make me crazy. It also makes it easy to see when you might have trended upward -- I did during my birthday month!!…
  • Went over on calories yesterday, so back on track today -- not in a week or a month or, well, a year from now!
  • E_ -- What fun! I love NSVs -- they're like a little surprise gift... The scale will never, ever go down fast enough but the unexpected extras are another great benefit to sticking with the program -- and little reminders that the body is changing for the better!
  • Thank you so much for the encouragement. I found the info on an AMT -- that looks awesome! It's so helpful to know that I'm not the only one who had to start small. I've come to serious exercise so late in life that sometimes I wonder if I'm not kidding myself, but something has finally clicked in my brain and "working…
  • Sorry to be so long getting back to say "thanks" -- McMack- thanks for taking the time to Google the ZR - that was so thoughtful! And consistency will be the key -- thanks for reminding me!! It's great that there's no motor and you control the stride length, so you can basically do anything your legs would do from hop to…
  • Nikkib - Thank you for your kind words of encouragement! I've seen the commercials for the Bowflex -- it looks incredibly intense!! It is so very nice to have something at home for cardio. Happy (well, "happy" may be a bit strong) to go to the gym three times a week to sling a few weights around but a real treat not to…
  • Thank you both for your comments. Marekdds, I did laugh about pretending to need to go to the bathroom -- that sounds exactly like something I'd do! And thanks so much for the suggestions! UncleMac, I am so impressed with the quality, and it's the only fun cardio thing I've ever used! I'll take your advice about tracking…
  • If you set the VA up with Garmin Express and Garmin Connect, you can access all the apps. It should be preloaded with some for general physical activity - walking indoors/out, running in/out, swimming, etc. When you complete an activity, the stats will show up in Garmin Connect, including distance, time, heart rate, and…
  • I have one. I'm certainly no expert but would be happy to try to answer any questions. I'm kind of a Garmin nut -- also have their scale and a Vivosmart HR. I've learned the most by following the Garmin Forums -- you can read all the questions and answers from users on your specific device. Also, Garmin Support has FAQs…
  • Start the core exercises I've been putting off... and walk, walk, walk! Hope everybody has a great day!
  • Thanks to you both for the suggestions. I do tend to overthink things and you've definitely helped me put it in perspective -- off to the store I go for supplies! Yay!
  • Got off track last week, so today back to the gym!
  • Thanks to all who post here -- it's a great reminder that the number on the scale isn't the only indicator that the changes we make add up to better health and happiness!
  • Hi all - I used MFP and followed this group last summer -- was so impressed with the support. Quit, though, when I decided to put my house on the market and make a major change to an apartment -- drove myself batty with the "should I/shouldn't I" and "keep this/donate this/toss this" questions, and sadly in my brain…
