  • If I have the time, I'll stop by an organic food store and hunt for a locally-made, full-fat, plain Greek yogurt with live cultures that have chewed their merry way through a lot of the lactose. I count about half the listed carbs (unless there's added sugar, which, well... count that double!). Cornucopia.org has…
  • Hmm. Some folks do better on low fat diets.... but you'd think she'd give diabetics some mighty good reasons to think they're among them! Any tips for being prepared for unexpected hospital visits?
  • I don't suppose she gave a lucid explanation (other than making a face like she'd just bitten into a lemon)?
  • Hmm. What's the point? Perhaps if you only eat 1 meal per day......... o:)
  • @2t9nty If you're interested in getting one..... The Freestyle LIbre is just hitting the pharmacies in the US. It requires a prescription, and most insurance will not cover it unless you're insulin-dependent. There are 5 pharmacy chains Freestyle's now using. Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, RiteAid, and Kroger. After phone calls…
  • My data from just a few days show a pattern of dipping into the low 60s/high 50s in the wee hours of the morning, then rising steadily into the 90s - 100s into late morning before I've even eaten anything. (This explains how I managed to get my A1c under 5.0 - and confirms to me that A1c is really not the gold standard, at…
  • Well, it is way easier to read BG levesl by waving a little reader by the implanted Libre sensor (not painful) than testing fingers. I got over 100 data points yesterday, plenty enough to show gentle wave patterns (and a serious spike 1 hour after a small serving of potatoes.....).
  • The protein thing is a sore subject among keto people, especially diabetics. Like almost everything else, protein affects different diabetics differently. For example..... I have a lean body type, and I unintentionally lost lean body mass my first year on keto due to insufficient protein intake. :o Like @2t9nty, I now aim…
  • OMG! If your docs didn't even know, you're hardly the fool! Ideally, it's the business of physicians to help you select a course of treatment that combines lifestyle choices and meds, balancing costs and benefits in the light of reliable and complete information (well, ok, as close as possible).... Hopefully, your LC diet…
  • That takes the, um, cake. So the gurus at the ADA are worried about the relatively-remote possibility of hypos if they stop recommending carb-laden meals and snacks, yet their website and magazine are loaded with ads for profitable diabetes meds that carry the relatively-remote possibility of DKA.....
  • Whew! Glad you're out of sick bay! I'm totally perplexed by the DKA scenario, as all the diabetes docs seem to say that it only happens with very high BG (in "real" life, that is, not thinking about all the meds). But your A1c would suggest an average BG of maybe around 140. ?? So, I'm wondering.... was your recent BG…
  • @awelmore, my pleasure. As he likes to say, his methods may seem severe, "but nothing else works." But, as you know, we're not all cut from the same cloth, so his hardcore positions are really starting points until we figure out what we can handle (and what not...). If you've gotten your A1c down below 5, you've obviously…
  • ! I don't recall any of my friends south of the border ever learning such practical lessons in their anatomy classes...
  • Dåmn, @canadjineh, you're the best.
  • KetoMCT is pure C8 caprylic acid. www.ketomct.com I heard the founder talking about MCT oil on a low-carb podcast and was impressed with his knowledge and candor. The website has a fair amount of info about MCTs. Here's a recent article summarizing research on MCTs: https://examine.com/supplements/MCTs/
  • I suspect this is another "what's good for the goose may slay the gander" scenarios that will take a while to crack. I fear we're not even into the foothills of understanding individual differences, genotypes, etc., that contribute to what's best for each of our tummies (which aren't about to tell us what to feed…
  • Fiber-Famished Gut Microbes Linked to Poor Health While probiotics receive more attention, key fibers remain the workhorses in maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/fiber-famished-gut-microbes-linked-to-poor-health1/ "Diet is one of the most powerful tools we have for changing the…
  • PS Here are a couple short vids explaining how your lipid profile might get temporarily whacky when you're in the weight-loss phase of keto. https://youtu.be/MNfjkTyBUdQ https://youtu.be/mZ-deF9I31s

  • This is one of those perpetual keto battlegrounds. Fiberphiles and fiberphobes coexist only with reluctance, much like the gingham dog and calico cat, and tend to spat when not supervised. That is, there isn't an objectively right or wrong way (at least until you've landed in one of the camps). Personally, I've found that…
  • @kim_m_kk - 1. Here are a couple recent round-ups of glucose meters: * https://www.diabetestechnology.org/surveillance.shtml * https://www.consumerreports.org/products/blood-glucose-meter/ratings-overview (subscription req.) Of the inexpensive meters that were top-rated in both studies, I have tried only the FreeStyle…
  • It's excreted around 1:1 with insulin but is easier to measure, thus it's meant to show how much insulin your pancreas is producing.
  • Congratulations! If you don't even need metformin any more, you certainly can claim to have slain the dragon. I assume you've had a c-peptide test along the way somewhere and are still producing plenty of insulin. ??
  • I'm in a trial period for a Dexcom CGM. The Contour Next EZ glucometers I use are always close to each other (unless the battery's about to croak) and to the lab I use, but they have sometimes been up to 25 points at variance with the CGM. The margin of error I was given for the CGM was 20%... :o
  • @cstehansen - Even into Day 5, there is still significant variation between my meter and the CGM. :/ The meters I use are Contour Next EZs. Though they always read fairly close to each other and to the results of the lab I use, they are still sometimes 20-25 points at odds with what the CGM shows (the meters almost always…
  • I just started a short trial on a Dexcom G4. It's been interesting so far... The first two days saw a fair amount of disparity between my CGM and glucometer, but it has narrowed over time and more calibrations (4x daily input of BG of data points from the glucometer). The first night I got alarms for low BG, but in fact my…
  • Both of them?
  • :worried: That is a recipe for a lifetime innsulin habit! It's extremely hard to find good nutritionists, and it's best to be highly distrustful until they show a hint of wisdom by uncoupling themselves from their associations' carb-heavy guidelines.
  • The more fat you put in your mouth, the less your body will burn from your on-board Strategic Energy Reserve (which you'd like to reduce). In other words, your body is not going to suffer if you don't give it more fat. Certainly there's no need to force yourself to eat fat in order to hit % targets, especially if you're…
