Hmmm... NIH is not good enough? CDC, NIH, FDA are all under US HHS AFAIK. But I found pages from both CDC and Mayo clinic on thiamine deficiency causing it. And others on soy based formula causing it. Those examples are about acute acidosis though and I won't make the mistake of linking any more papers here. Agree that it…

Oh Ok then. Now I can totally explain why that paper is incorrect. Guess I'll just contact the author now. Thanks for bringing so much to the table.

Yea, we do protein bars. Will definitely add granola to the breakfast pile. She loves Cracklin' Oat Bran, which is pretty dense, but I will check into it as well as the flavored PB. Nutella is hazlenut which she can't have. Also going to pick up some Fairlife whole milk today for a few more gs of protein. Ugh.. Is it lower…

How did you read that so fast? I am listening to all comments and am asking for more than just a "no." Sorry.

I posted the multiple links to get a conversation started, figuring that different people would respond to different subjects. Sorry if that was too broad and confusing. The links described the theory that a Western diet increases a body's acid load (and I summarized the reasons for it, e.g., potassium etc or lack…

I don't know that there is a definite benefit of focusing on the acidity of foods. I really just wanted to have a discussion about it without the stupid condescending meme and the legions of people who come out of the woodwork and think that it is awesome. It is crude and unhelpful and seems like a swat with a rolled up…

She feels very unhappy with her size and very much wants to gain weight. Those are not assumptions. I think she is crazy beautiful but I worry about her being underweight and about me being too much of a noodge trying to get her to eat more. She said that people at school have said things about her being "wow so skinny!",…

@tomteboda, You mentioned large doses of aspirin, I mentioned alcohol, exercise, and dehydration as causes of acidosis (not to mention nutritional ketosis but I won't poke that bear), so it seems that we agree that it can exist, severe and life-threatening, mild and temporary, or benign. I hope we agree that it is the…

Thank you for your kind and informative reply. I'll check it out!

My daughter has always been long and lean. Always riding the low line on the graph of normal weight since birth. Since her growth spurt, she is about 15 pounds underweight and struggling to gain. I wonder if she'd have more hungry fat cells to fill if I fed her more when she was a baby and made her chubby? #momguilt

Potassium and magnesium don't survive digestion? I am not talking about "the pH of foods." I am talking about alkalizing foods. Foods that provide more potassium, magnesium, bicarbonate. There is a difference between the pH of a food like a banana (slightly acidic) and the potassium and bicarbonate that are eventually…

Use the food search here and search for salmon. It will list a LOT of different salmon entries, some with and without skin, maybe you can do a comparison to figure out just the skin, but it will be pretty rough. https://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods/show/8397?manu=&fgcd=&ds=

Unfortunately, very little protein in rice or almond milk, but many of the commercial varieties seem to be fortified to be comparable to cow's milk for calcium and vitamin D. Fortified Soy milk has more protein, but soy is another common allergen. Check with your pediatrician.

Which is why I posted several references, assuming that people who feel strongly about it would take the time to read them. The decrease in certain nutrients (potassium, magnesium), bicarbonate products and fiber and the increase in sodium, saturated fat, and sugars leads to sustained chronic acidosis. Whole foods contain…

Ok... do you have any ideas about foods acting as buffers? Or are you telling me to study acid-base chemistry? I'd like to hear why people are so reactive when alkalizing foods are mentioned.
