Actually, DDT is being used to combat Malaria in Africa and parts of Asia - and has been for more than a decade. An article in Scientific American citing scientific studies (criteria met?) suggests it needs to be cut back due to harmful health effects. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/ddt-use-to-combat-malaria/#

And: "History is chock full of formerly believed to be safe products. It took people standing up and saying something about it before it stopped." My preface to bringing up cigarettes.. And: I'm sorry you find my numerous apologies tepid. They came from my heart. That's all I can offer. I'm officially leaving this derailed…

Actually, I did make a list and post it. I did not equate chemicals in food to cigarettes, that's not what I meant. I said they were once considered safe and now we know better. Just as we may learn that some things in our food may later be found to be unsafe. But again, arguing these details was never the point of my…

@Tacklewasher To me, attacking a person on a personal level or insulting them has no place in serious debate. Debate the issue with your facts and opinions, disagree all you want. But personal insults are low blows and take away from your argument, not add to it.

When I say chemicals - I specifically mentioned earlier I was discussing manmade additives. I'm not talking about naturally occurring msg or sodium nitrate. The fact of the matter is that most of the products with these man made additives in them are from highly processed foods that also tend to be unhealthy in other ways…

Studies by truly independent parties are hard to find, except on older ingredients. Self-study does not qualify in my opinion. Yet, it does for the FDA. I don't read food "blogs".
-
Define "science". If you mean company paid studies that not surprisingly support their initial goal, I question their veracity.
-
@stevencloser: I think you just lost all credibility in a serious debate, attacking my intelligence, of which you know nothing about. I took the high road and apologized if anyone misunderstood me to be saying "natural" was always better and explained my way of eating is mine alone, not a judgement on others. Yet you stand…

Do you have complete confidence that every chemical in your food Is safe for regular, repeated consumption? More power to ya. They said DDT was safe at one point. They said cigarettes were good for your health. They said BPA was safe. No one is saying if it's natural it's automatically safe, as in Hemlock. But you seem to…

My recent posts really got off track from what I originally intended by my post. My post was that I don't agree with it just being under your calories that count, but what you eat matters. I used the word natural - which was actually intended to mean veggies, fruits, proteins and the like not fast foods or twinkies.…

It's pointless. It will inevitably be argued otherwise. After all, they've been approved for use in food. But I don't believe that necessarily means they are safe. I still have my concerns. If you must know, some of the additives I try to avoid BHA or BHT, artificial sweeteners, food dyes like blue # 1 & 2, red # 3 - just…

History is chock full of formerly believed to be safe products. It took people standing up and saying something about it before it stopped. If you think the food industry isn't putting things in your food that are harmful, you just keep believing that. If we all stopped accepting it, it wouldn't be the norm and prices of…

I do use organic, unbleached whole grain flour. I also use raw unbleached sugar. I use organic chocolate chips with milk, cocoa, butter, sugar and that's it. To me, it's more "natural" means it's closer to its original form. Cookies in packages from Duncan Hines or whatever have a whole lot more ingredients in them than…

The point was eating for overall health. Eating a tapeworm is not healthy. And I have already stated many natural foods have scientific names, I was over-simplifying to make a point, not vilify everything with multiple syllables. For the record: science is good. Natural, non-injected, sustainable, organic FOOD is what I…

It's my unpopular opinion. That's the thread. I get flack from lots of people. I didn't call anyone out. I just stated my unpopular opinion. And I'm not anti-vaccination, nor do I think science is a bad thing. I just don't trust current regulations to provide adequate testing and protection about what goes in and on my…

It's a hot topic, clearly. But I, for one, do not think it's a good idea to put chemicals with little testing of long term effects into my body. Especially when lobbyists work hard to get them approved. I used the inability to pronounce some of the chemicals as an example, not as a rule. Plenty of natural ingredients have…

The link between sodium nitrites and cancer CTCA May 31, 2013 A study by the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii and the University of Southern California suggests a link between eating processed meats and cancer risk. The study followed 190,000 people, ages 45-75, for seven years and found that people who ate the most…

Hemlock, lol. Certainly natural, but kind of ignores the "healthy" part. Keep it relevant.
-
You can improve all your numbers by losing weight. That's a fact. But saying the quality of your food doesn't matter? Saying it's ok to eat foods laden with chemicals we cannot pronounce and are PROVEN to cause cancer and are even banned in other countries, doesn't matter? Dyes, preservatives, pesticides...they matter.

I went to a dietician at my local hospital as referred by my doctor at my request. I'm overweight, not obese, and have "exemplary" (docs words) cholesterol, excellent blood sugar / fasting and non-fasting, no high blood pressure, no disease. I just want to know how many calories, macros, nutrients to feed my body that runs…
-
I disagree that what you eat doesn't matter. Sure you'll lose weight eating at a deficit, but HEALTH should be the ultimate goal. Natural is better and I'm sticking to it!
-
No. I emphasize healthy eating. Whole Foods, treats in moderation. My kids used to ask for juice all the time when they were little and I would say, no - it's high in sugar and doesn't really fuel your body. I think you're thirsty. Let's have some water. When they wanted cookies instead of fruit, again I would explain…
-
Tough one. It really depends on a lot of factors...one can't just say you're overweight so you are going to cost more. Morbidly obese, maybe. In my case, I'm a fit fat person. I'm have "exemplary" cholesterol levels, per my doctor. Ideal blood sugar, fasting and non-fasting, I have no high blood pressure. I run 3-4 miles 5…

Just was recommended to check out this link. So glad I did! I thought I was going crazy! I'm not alone. I'm 38 - early peri-menopause. I'm all over the place with my periods and PMS, hot flashes, lack of sleep, etc. I've been dieting religiously for 3 months and have lost little to nothing. On the plus side, I'm eating…

Thanks for the link - they sound like me for sure! Wow, it's good news and bad news. I'm not crazy and I am doing the work - my body just isn't responding the way it used to. Well, more to discuss with the dietician and probably my ob. I'm not giving up being active and eating healthy. I just might have to change my…

I'm measuring fluid in ounces (measuring cups) and food on a scale. It's an old food scale - like 15 years old. Maybe time I get a new one? Guess it could be off. I'm not wearing the same clothes I was a month ago. I'm a teacher and and I'm not wearing dress clothes anymore and weekends have always been stretchy pants so…

Im measuring food in cups and on the scale. I do very limited processed foods. Not soda, no juice. The occasional kind bar if I'm out of fruit and nuts. I cut out alcohol.l, except on occasion (last night was not an occasion). I realize the 4 lbs gain is probably a fluke but it's the over all lack of loss - even when I was…

I really do need some electrolytes! All the nutrients you mentioned are way low in my tracker. I'm going to try the tablets. Similar, but way less sugar probably than the goo or jelly beans I used to eat on long runs. I also need to get in more protein. I'm a little more than half my recommended amount. I am aiming for 1…

Thanks! I will definitely try that. A couple years ago I trained and completed 3 half marathons. Thing was, I never controlled what I ate. I lost some post baby weight, but didn't get below 165 lbs. I'm at 180 now and want to get to 150 so diet and exercise must be combined. Trying to get it right is hard. I'm just sooo…
-
Your start it almost the exact same as mine! I'm just getting started (again) and this really inspires me! My goal is to get to 150 right now, but I'd love to be 130 again. How long did it take and how many cals did you start with? Macros?
