Starting to jog from fast-walking is tough. And most of my runner friends have had injuries - minor to major. Major involving pain and months of PT. So I'd say, just be cautious. Get good shoes. In my completely anecdotal experience, a lot of knee injuries come from bad form, and a lot of bad form comes from foot problems…

I hope you let us know how this goes, if you consult a doctor, which I hope you have the insurance to do. It does make sense that exercise affects hormones but I haven't heard of similar responses.

The fact is that exercise will find its way into your life but when you're carrying around so much extraneous weight, it's tough to get started. Just a personal anecdote: I lost 30 or so pounds (obese -> just above "normal") before I started exercising. It's hard to carry a 30+ pound backpack for very long, much less when…

I find it annoying when ANYONE who is a total stranger comments on anything that anyone else does! My husband bought some steak one time - the woman behind us said "all that red meat is going to KILL YOU, you know." WTF? One time I was behind a quite-pregnant woman in line at the grocery store and the *cashier* was the one…

I'm sorry that the "keep it up" is annoying - sure, they're judging you, but also they're cheering you on! Maybe they realize the work you've put in. My take.
-
This all sounds terrible - I feel awful for you. I hope going forward that this fitness journey/quest is something POSITIVE that can motivate you.
-
I'm so, so, so sorry about your sisters. How agonizing.

Congrats on finding this out at 24 - lots don't get to this point til their 40s, 50s, 60s - then they wish they'd started when they were in their 20s!

Being "obese." Vanity. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law lost a lot of weight, though on a faddish diet (Scarsdale as opposed to the peanut butter diet or whatever else is out there). They inspired me to try, and then compliments & feeling more energetic kept that going. Being 45 and realizing, it's not going to get…

It's ABSOLUTELY supposed to mean "Woo-hoo!" I don't even know why there's a "WTF?" button (that's what's in the code when you hover over the icon).

Late to see this post, but WOW! Not only do you look great, but you sound very centered.

Start. Slowly. For me, the elliptical machine or dancing were unsustainable for even 5-10 minutes at the beginning. I mean, literally I reached my (calculated) maximum heart rate after 5 minutes on the elliptical. Walking, swimming, a stationary recumbent bike. Walking's the easiest and cheapest!

I have always thought that "vanity sizing" was much more prevalent in bigger department stores and that "boutiques" can be depressingly the opposite!
-
I'm guessing you continue to eat crap because you're the heaviest you've ever been, you're unhappy with yourself, you shake your head in disgust when you see your own reflection.... I went on a low-cal faddish diet (Scarsdale) for two weeks to jumpstart my weight loss. It's tough - black coffee, protein bread for…

Envious!

I went on the Scarsdale diet for 2 weeks just to get me jumpstarted. Losing some weight quickly on a prescribed diet and learning the habit of recording everything got me going. It did take nearly a year to lose the other 35 pounds.

Vanity was the initial trigger. I'd always been attractive, I now realize, though at those earlier, "attractive" times I always THOUGHT I needed better hair, skin, nose, etc. At 5'3 and 172.5 pounds I found myself "obese." 35 lbs later in the "normal" BMI range is such a relief, but now my goal is more fitness than vanity.…

If you're stressed or anxious, perhaps you can think of MFP as something YOU can control.

WOWZA!
-
I'm jealous of everyone who has a very attractive "before," because I would not allow myself to be photographed until recently!
-
Yay! But now I want to know the story behind the "Dawn" pose!
-
This has GOT to be one of my faves.

I googled "dragonpants" but I can't say I'm enlightened. PLEASE EXPLAIN!!
-
My stretch-waist pants are getting a little ratty, so I decided to try on my regular pants that have been sitting there in the closet...and they fit! Now I have a whole new wardrobe!

You look great! I've done something similar - 20% took about 340 days, but still, it's 35 pounds, and I'm 5'3" (& 46 yo), so 172.5 -> 137.5 is a LOT on me. I only started exercising in the last few weeks - it just seemed too hard to lug all the weight around. I'm hoping I won't just have less weight, but a better-defined…

Favorite Zumba Youtube video?

I didn't start working out in earnest until I'd shed quite a few pounds - went from obese to overweight. Any kind of lugging weight around (walking) is hard, but pressure is weight/area so imagine all the weight going down right into that small area of your knees and it's tough on them. I second swimming if that's…

"The more, the merrier" is just not true for everyone. Carbs of certain kinds hurt my husband's blood sugar. That's just factual. I'm not going into philosophical reasoning about protein, good & bad fats, keto, & other diets. Grain/bean. Carbs. Raise. My. Husband's. Blood. Sugar. Even when he's training for a marathon. I'm…

If you can stand it, cottage cheese, yogurt.

I want to be you, but without races! How long did it take? Did you lose weight and then start exercising later? Or was it a joint endeavor?
