I drink diet coke (I find regular sodas cloyingly sweet and unpleasant) but I cut way back recently because it started to bother me how addicted to caffeine I was. Good advice I got for weaning myself off of it without the headaches was to keep a glass of cold water in the fridge with a green tea bag in it, and just keep…

protein and fiber have always worked for me. I usually skip breakfast, then split my calories between an early lunch and dinner for big, filling meals. Trying to do tiny meals and snacks throughout the day just leaves me hungry all the time. I'll make something like poached eggs and a porkchop with steamed broccoli, or do…

I wish this could be a message sent verbatim to every single person who joins the site.

Dessert Bullet was a wonderful invention. :)

I don't see how price itself can be in question when vegetables, grains and legumes are the cheapest foods there are. Nutrition wouldn't be difficult to achieve either considering you can practically live on potatoes alone even before you throw in the incredible variety of other cheap foods there. The key would just be…

If you're talking Type II it has a LOT more to do with what you eat than the 'genetics' cop out... But anyway I'm sure the OP meant low carb, just, the fact that she called it no carb speaks to not being very informed. You guys might do better linking her to some resources on keto rather than 'you mean you only eat…

A 4 piece Dairy Queen chicken strip or steak finger basket has 1400 calories, not counting any drinks. I used to get one for dinner, sometimes once a week because it was on the way home. I had no idea what I was eating, I could only do that now if that was literally the only thing I ate for the day... What's crazy is that…

I just mentioned this in another thread but for me when I first started out it was the number of calories in olive oil. I'd never really paid attention to the label before and thought I was being healthy by using it all the time lol.
-
Just an FYI, you're not really supposed to heat olive oil to high temps so I wouldn't recommend actually frying anything in it. Be aware too (although you probably already are) that it has loads of calories. When I first started out I was pretty shocked when I first noticed that. Anyway, I'll get out of the way now and let…

Ah yes, "triggered". So OP, one time a guy was telling me about how his buddy got killed right in front of him in Afghanistan and he's never been the same since and I interrupted and started talking about the time I counted a calorie and it upset me.

Has everyone forgotten the humble spaghetti squash? I have a spiralizer but it's still my favorite, I preferred it to noodles even back when I was still eating noodles.

If you don't consider vegetables real food I guess.

Seasoning is important, and also you want to make sure you're not overcooking it since that does change the flavor to a less neutral and more obviously cauliflower-ish one. You describing it as 'mashed up' kind of made me wonder about that. There's this spicy Asian chili garlic sauce I buy that pairs up really well with…

I'm at work right now but I'll be watching this thread and hopefully contributing later. I work out meal prices almost as automatically as I do calories now and it's pretty rare I go over $2. Lots of chicken thighs, beans, pork chops and eggs for my proteins and veggies are cheap. I don't do bread or rice or pasta often…

Interesting, thanks. I used to wind up with avocados that were horribly bitter and always assumed it was a result of them freezing up in the cooler at work overnight. Now it's back to being a mystery but I'll definitely take advantage of this next time they're on sale.

Figuring this out about myself was a big factor in finally starting to lose weight, even before I got into calorie counting. For me, when it comes to chocolate especially it's easier to cut it out altogether than to eat in moderation. Now when I decide to give in and have some I'll buy just a six pack of Oreos or one of…

Lol, we'll you don't generally put whole potatoes in a stew either. They're about the size of red potatoes anyway so I just split them in half.

Solution: make brownies at home. It takes 20 minutes and costs like, a dollar. Of course if you're like me and can't control yourself around sweets sometimes having an entire pan around could be a bad bad temptation, but I've had success with either immediately portioning them out and freezing them when they cool or else…

I still used canned salmon solely for the croquettes my mom used to make, I really should get around to collecting a few more recipes.

This is the best answer you're going to get. I think 3-4 oz of protein is usually considered a 'serving' but it really depends on how many calories you're eating in a day and how many meals you're breaking it up into. Not really possible to overdo it on most veggies if you're not drowning them in butter or oil or some kind…

I've known a couple people go vegan or vegetarian and actually gain weight because they see that as an excuse to live on french fries and vegan meat substitutes instead of eating any of those, you know, vegetables.

I've barely scratched the surface of this thread, but jeez, so many of you with terrible unsupportive family or false friends in your lives. But they always do say the best revenge is living well. ;)

That post made me hungry, jeez.

I'll put them in a stew as a potato substitute, they loose their heat and the color in the skin fades so they're basically indistinguishable and no one has ever noticed.

I get burned out on normal salads so for something different, I make a broccoli one that's just a cup and a half of broccoli florets tossed together with about half a cup of plain yogurt, a little thinly sliced red onion and like a tablespoon each of craisins and pumpkin seeds (or sunflower), with some red pepper flakes…

I assume you didn't mean to quote me, as I'm not the one who said that.

I had already switched to a more natural diet and cut my carb intake in half early last year...it never particularly bothered me being overweight...well obese actually before, but as I moved into my thirties my body just couldn't handle the diet I had gotten used to eating anymore and I knew I had to do something. I lost…

That's amazing, congrats! :)
