  • If it's actual hunger, I agree with some the strategies discussed here to make sure you aren't hungry at the end of the day. But, if it is your brain just feeling snacky, I've recently started eating Persian cucumbers dipped in Penzey's pico fruta. It makes my brain happy because it's got the sweet, salty, and crunchy all…
  • I'm glad others are having this problem. I just got a new FitBit because my old one was having heart rate issues (sitting at my desk it would have me at 150 bpm, manual check would ensure that was not the case) and recording me burning thousands of extra calories a day and I was worried my new one was somehow doing the…
  • Nutritional yeast: I was finding it really hard to reach my protein goals, especially as I shift to a mostly plant-based diet. Putting nutritional yeast on grain bowls, pasta (with cheese of course, I'm not giving that up), roasted vegetables, or even cottage cheese has been a game changer. My dietitian: Is it insulting to…
  • Holy cow, that just put things into perspective for me! I've only lost one bag of kitty litter, but still... I knew things like hiking were easier because I am hauling less weight along, but a whole bag of kitty litter is :o When I get discouraged, I tend to remind myself of things like "you managed to lose 25% of your…
  • I was amazed at the difference that can make! Over the last 2 years I've lost about 40 lbs. 30 of those I was losing very slowly, like it took me a over a year to lose them. During that time, according to the scale at my dietitian's my muscle level trend was very steady, sometimes even going up a little. Then, I lost the…
  • Definitely agreeing with some of the complaints here. I got lower middle class, but I'm sure part of that is because I do love me some frozen pizza and fish sticks. But, also because a lot of the foods I assume were "high class" were foods I don't like, but not because they are too "fancy" for me. For example,…
  • Yep. I've noticed that most people that most people that hate BMI seem to think they are exceptional. Like no, BMI isn't a perfect measure, especially if you aren't a white male. It being a bad measure for an Olympic athlete doesn't mean that an average person looking is actually "healthy" if the chart says they are obese.…
  • Anecdotally that is true. I have lost ~40 lbs over the last year and a half. I do pretty light cardio, mostly a 5 times a week 4-5 mile walk and occasional spin classes. But, according to my body scans every 6 weeks, I have lost hardly any muscle (I know those body scans can have variable accuracy, which is why I mostly…
  • I just started an anti-anxiety med (#TeamZoloft) about a month and a half ago and now that I'm past the initial adjustment phase the only thing I don't like is how mad it makes me that it took me until I was 35 to get on it. I always make the deal with myself that I have to start working out, but if once I start I still am…
  • I have been doing a lot of breakfast grain bowls lately. I'll make a big batch of brown rice or quinoa on the weekend and toss it in the freezer (I can make several weeks worth this way). In the morning I will heat it up with whatever veggies I have. Lately that has been a mix of sauteed cherry tomatoes, onion, garlic, and…
  • Same. I'm pretty good at sticking with tracking what I eat daily, but if I stop weighing, that's a sign I need to check what I'm doing. Sometimes it is deliberate, like when I get back from a vacation I won't weigh for a week or so, to give travel water weight to go away and things to level back out. But, when I was dating…
  • That was the big one for me. I was always of the philosophy that "I'd rather be happy and eating cake than miserable and dieting". But, when I finally realized I needed to change and started working with my dietitian, I also found out that I can eat cake and lose weight. Now I just feel bad for all the dieters I know that…
  • Same. I love cottage cheese, but it has to be the large curd kind, and some brands taste a lot better to me than others, some are almost chalky. And, it depends on what you eat with it too. I know some people love fruits, especially pineapple, but that thought literally makes me gag. I'm savory all the way, usually with…
  • I suddenly started hitting my protein goals and my dietitian wondered how I was doing it. My answer was "a ton of nutritional yeast on everything!". My morning grain bowls get some, my cottage cheese gets some, roasted vegetables get some....I was skeptical of it when a vegetarian friend mentioned it to me, but now just 6…
  • My personal best was 10 lbs. I went cross-country skiing for the first time that season and went 6 miles, then went home and at a chicken parm sandwich and a beer or two. Between the workout, all the water from the work, the sodium bomb of a sandwich, and the beer my body held onto water like crazy. It was fascinating to…
  • Is the point you are trying to make that you think that "being aware foods have calories" is the same as counting calories?
  • The most depressing thing was finding out what a serving of pasta actually looks like.....now I only have pasta on days where I've planned and can have two servings of it.
  • Mine was eating when I was hungry. Before I started seeing my dietitian and reading the posts here I'd be like "oh, I just won't eat much during the day and have a big dinner when I get home and it's all good." But for me that would lead to me being miserable all day, going home and eating everything and that is why I was…
  • I live in the "Napa Valley of breweries", so definitely understand where you are coming from. One of the things I've done start asking places about half pours, or even taster pours/flights. That way I can try several beers, but not consume all those calories. It can be disappointing to have only a small amount of a beer…
  • It was definitely a game changer, especially when I freeze foods. When I first started I was really bad at writing on the container how many servings were in something. So, I'll have a container of bean soup, but not know if that container has 1 serving or 4. But, now that I've started doing all my recipes by grams, I just…
  • I can understand her getting frustrated at terms like "guilt-free" and whatever. But, from reading it about it she wanted things that didn't have those labels changed. She wanted them to do things like label their sugar-free froyo as "for diabetics" or their gluten free options as "for celiacs". But, as other's have…
  • That's where I am. I'm at 152, and think I'd like to be at 145 and will probably do it. But, as my dietitian has discussed with me, "what is more important to you, reaching the goal weight or maintaining?". For some people, they might be willing and able to make the long term adjustments to lose those last 10 lbs. For me…
  • I think I might have read it wrong too....my FitBit and MFP have been syncing super well lately, so I assumed the problem was solved and their sync issues were related to the Fitbit problem and the fact FitBit isn't syncing to itself right, so probably not to MFP. Basically, so many syncing problems!
  • That's a whole different issue. The issue today is that the FitBit app is down for everyone. According to the FitBitSupport Twitter they have identified the issue and are working on it. So, people just need to be patient and let them get it fixed.
  • There is some good advice in here, but honestly my advice is probably just patience. I think things like switching it up can help some, but I also think part of what they do is just distract you while your body does its thing. I was in a 3 month plateau, and then suddenly without changing a thing my body started dropping…
  • I either have tiny wrists or large elbow. "Unfortunately, the wrist and elbow methods do not agree with each other. The wrist method says that you have a thin body frame while the elbow method says that you have a broad body frame." I'd have to go down a full half inch for it to consider me medium, and 1" for it to…
  • I like to claim that I'm an "accidental vegetarian". It's not a deliberate lifestyle choice (in fact the times I've done it intentionally, I failed). And because I'm doing it accidentally, I don't do it full time. But, I was trying to reduce the amount of fat in my diet and so started with things like replacing my morning…
  • Not only that, it knows if I ate a sodium heavy take-out meal the day before, or had an extra difficult work-out or where I am in my cycle, or.... I weigh myself at my dietitian appointments. For some reason my meetings with her are always on heavy days. It's not uncommon for me to be like "so today I weighed in at 155,…
  • I've been there and understand that. But, there are so many factors to consider...first how much do they currently weigh? Someone at a much higher weight is going to find the weight loss easier at first, but it will slow. Second, are they doing it in a sustainable healthy way? Sure, that weight loss sounds great at first,…
  • I was okay finding out what 1 serving of almost all foods actually was....but pasta was the one that broke my heart. Now, if there is a day where I know I'm eating pasta, I'll have a light breakfast and lunch or bank some calories over a couple days to give myself the leeway to have at least 2 servings.
