  • @kazzabum1 What's the alternative to sticking with it? I have to remind myself of that daily. For me the alternative is keeping the extra pounds and making the things I enjoy more difficult, adding extra wear and tear on my joints, overall impacting negatively on my health. I'm fairly new to this plan and weeks 2-4 were a…
  • I'm short and was able to maintain at 130-132 years ago. Looked better at 125 - lost the little stomach pooch - and looked terrible at 114. My goal is whatever I can maintain in the healthy range.
  • Cherokee National Forest near the Cherohala Skyway
  • I joined the Y to swim laps 6 weeks before the shutdown. In the past if I ran but didn't swim it was no problem to resume swimming. If I swam but didn't run I had to start from scratch when it came to running. I love the quietness of swimming so no music for me. I wear earplugs when I swim to keep the water out.
  • @alteredsteve175 I'm going backpacking later this month and I think a couple of the guys are 80 or close to it. I'm hoping I can keep up.
  • Interesting article in the NYTimes. Good news for cyclists. https://nyti.ms/32Ngkuu
  • @springlering62 Are you referring to Clark Howard? I have 4 different sizes of hiking clothes. What doesn't fit me by the end of December will find a new home. Since I'm retired my clothing necessities are few.
  • I like the comment about keeping your head in the game. What would you say to your best friend if they were in your situation? Assuming you are a nice person (I'm sure you are😊) it would be something kind and encouraging. So be kind and encouraging to yourself. If you read through comments sections you'll see you are far…
  • Fresh Air is my go to.
  • After the hike one of my friends said she wished she were in better shape. I said: "Don't we always?" I'm pleased I'm not in worse shape. I judge the difficulty of a hike by how I feel on the two days after. I've been on easier hikes that have left me feeling ridden hard and put up wet. This one didn't. I give credit to…
  • It was a looooooong 8.5 miles. Hot and some sections of the trail had a grade of 25-30%.
  • @jan110144 Welcome! I know what works form me too- swimming. I joined a Y in February and they closed in March. I wanted to be build strength in my core and upper body and increase my range of motion all without hurting myself. I've been using exercise DVD's (Jessica Smith's 6 week plan) that uses hand weights and walking.…
  • I'm a fan of Jessica Smith workout DVD's (She also is on youtube). I can't imagine going to an exercise class-there's no pause button! Plus I don't do well in groups. I am not a talented athlete and have health issues too but I'm still able to do a whole lot of stuff: swim, hike, backpack, kayak, and bike. And none of it…
  • I should be getting my gear together for a camping trip and getting in a workout but I'm hanging out on MFP instead.
  • I've been on synthroid for 25 years and also have osteopenia that has progressed to osteoporosis. No doctor has ever mentioned a connection between thyroid function, the medications used to treat thyroid issues and bone loss. It's complicated and since I'm not a health professional all I will say is make sure to ask your…

  • If your swimming technique isn't good, it might not be the sport for you unless you have access to a good coach. If you find swimming is hard on your ankles try using a pool buoy and let your legs relax. If you are more comfortable with it, use a snorkel. If swimming is not your thing, try something else. Even though water…
  • @AnnPT77 Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest you use or promote protein powder because you don't do either. I am not much of a meat eater and you gave me some ideas on how to get more protein out of a vegetarian diet without using any supplements. I hope that clarifies things or am I just digging a deeper hole.

  • @AnnPT77 Thanks for letting me see your food diary. I have trouble getting enough protein and you've given me some ideas. I also like real food but will probably start adding protein powder to oatmeal and yogurt.

  • I went camping last weekend and took a few days off from MFP. On the way home I stopped at a new coffee shop (actually the only coffee shop in my little town) and got a creamy, icy, honey coffee drink. It was wonderful. Now back to weighing, measuring, and counting.
  • I'd been a bit chunky all my life so I didn't know what a realistic goal was for me. Years ago I joined WW and after 4 or 5 months of really following the plan my weight stabilized. Since it was in the healthy range that became my goal weight. It's my goal weight again.
  • I don't even carry 30 pounds when I backpack. The key to exercise is to find something you enjoy or at least doesn't make you miserable.
  • My cousin who is a university trained nutritionist told me two women of the same height, age and activity level could eat the same thing and still be at different weights.
  • @BobWillers Swimming will strengthen your core without learning an alien language. But you do need good swimming technique. and find somewhere to swim.
  • I'm not at maintenance but when I get there I'll only be able to eat 1200-1400 calories and I'm concerned I'll be dieting forever. How many calories do you eat to maintain?
  • Getting old isn't easy. Carrying extra weight just makes it harder.
  • Has anyone used Gorilla Formula 23?
  • Yeah, if added 7-up or tonic to my wine I just wouldn't drink it period. Problem solved.

  • I have 4 autoimmune disorders, the first was diagnosed 30 years ago. I'm a just carry on type of person so it took a long time to find out what was wrong- due to some reluctance on my part, and missed diagnosis on several doctors' part. The good news is that I'm in my mid-sixties and a very active person. Eating a healthy…
