  • Do join! See you on Strava 😁 If you're done cycling for the year, you can still go for some nice walks. Gotta keep moving. 100 miles in one sitting is a lot! The satisfaction you get out of such an achievement like is way better than a stupid mug :) Next time you'll do it without suffering.
  • This whole muscle rebuilding thing still has me puzzled. How does it work? (it works very well as, indeed, the body is an amazing creation) I've read somewhere, you're supposed to take protein within 30m of the end of exercise to avoid DOMS. Well, that ain't true. But certainly just irrigating the muscles with water isn't…
  • And did it help? Or is it too soon tell?
  • Thank you so much. So much insightful stuff. IMO, this post deserves to be pinned in Most Helpful Posts - Getting Started (Must Reads) I just learnt I'm a "mouth" craver :), I'll be letting this wave pass over me...
  • Hi Roger. Good move to start before things get out of hand. I'm along for a not-too-serious ride (but can be too serious at times about counting calories and stuff). See you.
  • Yet another challenge? OK Apart from those blasted "gran fondo" challenges, I'm collecting them all  A pretty long commute to work racks up kilometers and miles. Maybe, I ought to challenge you to make more distance than me...? 🤣 59.7 km (37 miles) this week 9392 km (5836 miles) this year Winter is coming (snow…
  • Hello Rich. It's totally possible! In my experience, walking is the easiest exercise to start with. What has helped me is a step counter (FitBit, Garmin, Apple watch) and well worth the investment. It'll push you to make those 10.000 steps (and more) every day. Enjoy!
  • Hi, Mario, good luck :)
  • Sleep, rest and eat all my calories during the weekend. This must have recharged the batteries to full capacity. Yesterday, not a single issue and feeling very well, energetic - even at the end of the day.
  • Starting is hard. Overcoming your inner resistance and bad habits is hard. Once you're over that hurdle it gets easier. But it remains hard indeed :) "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch"
  • Update: no dizziness the last few days.
  • A journey of a thousand miles (or calories :)) begins with a single step. I know exercising can be pretty hard in the beginning but eventually you will feel better and better! Keep going.
  • No I didn't go and see my doc. I'm not that worried. I've had these spells of dizziness when I did calorie counting a few years ago (lost +30kg). And lo and behold, the spells are back when I started MFP. A part from the dizziness I feel like a machine. Let me explain (or brag :) ): I commute to work by bicycle. That's…
  • Trying to get off the couch to change tyres on my bicycle
  • Thank you all for your excellent and insightful answers. There's no doubt that the dizziness is due to my reduced intake of whatever (be it calories, sodium, carb, protein, etc.). I'm still trying to fine-tune things (CI CO). Clearly, the weight tumbling off the scales is NOT a good thing. We'll need to experiment some…
  • I think you may be right, esp. about the Sodium. Even if I don't like salt (except in crisps :), which I don't eat anymore) I ought to have more salt. With the drinking and sweating from my bike rides, it's got to be the electrolytes (I forgot to mention I do take magnesium). For the potassium though, no bananas for me, no…
  • These scales are fun but I don't think they can be accurate. They're just a gimmick but they aren't a scientific instrument. Don't look at the absolute numbers and observe the trends over a week or so. For me: Weight: down, and therefore BMI down Body fat is going up again: well no, it's definitely disappearing. I can see,…
  • Well, hello "middle aged" and not so middle aged people. Kind of scary realising I'm middle aged, soon a senior? Oh noooo! I might be considered a MAMIL (middle aged man in lycra) 🤣, but really I'm not, though I am wearing Pikachu-coloured lycra very often. Feeling younger than the age of my bones, I intend to keep it that…
  • OK. Make sense. Often those bad trans fats are in the unhealthy hyper-processed, refined industrial 'foodstuff' that we shouldn't be eating but often can't resist due to their addictive ingredients (thanks food industry).
  • I'll second that. Basically, you'll be pretty hungry and it'll be really hard to resist eating back a big chunk of those exercise calories. Without a (superhuman?) discipline, you'll get used to eating a lot. And then, when you don't exercise as much, while still eating the amount you've gotten used to, well, we know…
  • I'm aware that for absorption of vitamins from veggies, we need fats. I have linseed every day, on average 1/2 avocado, and some olive oil (it's supposed to be good). A little butter shouldn't be too bad I think. Oh, I'm quite nutty. If available, I'll have some walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and my favourite: peanuts &…
  • Thanks, it's making a bit more sense now.
  • Total fat is 50g, saturated 19g I think I'll just do like you and not pay too much attention. I will try to keep saturated as low as possible and not worry about the other fat figures (other than the fat around my belly and hips).
  • What's the meaning of life without pizza? (as long as you avoid the "Hawaian" kind  )
  • Well I'll be damned. Just to check, I entered a manual biking activity in MFP and lo and behold: That's pretty close to Strava's c.q. Wahoo's estimate. And yes, it was vigorous (still trying to reach 26 avg) Whatever. We'll do the 50% correction ourselves then.
  • A power meter is on my wish list. Thing is, I've got 2 bikes I switch between (gravel 1 with gravel tires, gravel 2 with road tires). But watts per hour x 3.6 could be useful. For this morning ride that would be 360 calories (meh...), let's round that up to say... 500  . I'll be simply assuming that we're off by…
  • Oh oh ... those calories from Strava are wrong calories. Damn! not relying too much on the calorie counter given the Strava’s accuracy problems https://www.yellowjersey.co.uk/the-draft/strava-calorie-count/
  • Ok guys, thanks for all your comments and insights. FYI, I'm doing this for 4+ years for over 50.000km (that's several times around the globe) Today's (slow) return trip:* 1h15, 28km with headwind and more elevation to climb (argggh) * 113w estimated power, 992 calories * Avg HR 129, max HR 163 (wrist HR shows 10% less) I…
