  • jerikris is the exception not the rule. There are likely very few people that could complete a full ironman on 5-7 hours per week. I was able to complete a half on a plan that was about 5-10 hours per week. The key to finishing is making sure you getting your long workouts in. Your not going to hurt yourself if you miss a…
  • Late arrival to the conversation but I will say that Beginner Triathlete has great plans of the free and paid variety. However, for both my Sprint and Olympic I just winged it. Worked for me as I was pretty busy and it was difficult to nail down what I might do from one day to the next. When I moved to long course I had to…
  • When I was training for Sprint's and Olympics I was able to work in some strength training. However, once I stepped up to a half and then eventually a full there was no way I could figure out how to work a regular job, be home with family and find time to include strength training. I would agree that it would no doubt help…
  • I am not sure about the UK but here in the US most states have Mountain Biking clubs that have regular get together's. That would be my first thing to check. There are a lot of different ways to interpret going for a bike ride. A joy ride for an hour around the neighborhood would likely not do as much as putting the hammer…

  • Yes, and the beer belly guy was hysterical. I guess he need straps to keep the bar from getting away from him and bouncing into the mirror. I guess the second guy is a "lefty"
  • Lots of good information here. If your a new runner you will get a lot of helpful information from a multitude of backgrounds. The bottom line, you need to do the following. 1. Consult Doctor 2. Get properly fitted shoes made for running. This means do not go to your local big box store and buy them on your own, go to a…
  • This^^^ Your first time out the likelihood of you getting a podium spot are limited. Just plan to go out and have fun and learn what you can from your experience. Transitions times will improve with each race and will vary depending on distance. Meaning a Spring triathlon requires little more than throwing on shoes and…
  • Regarding HR Zones, I just went from experience for a long time and as it turns out I was pretty darn close. Just finished having a Lactate Threshold test done at the University and I got a much more accurate picture. Will have it done again the spring and then summer to see what improvements I can make. Also had a…
  • I raced in one last year, other than being held on a ski slope it was not that hard. Climbing up the slopes was probably the most difficult part as the obstacles were more fun that difficult. I would recommend going with a friend as the walls that you have to scale might require a boost/lift up.
  • Swimming will absolutely get easier if you keep on swimming. It's pretty frustrating in the beginning but I have seen the largest number of noobs, myself included, have huge breakthroughs at some point. When it all does finally click it's awesome. The downside, as Scott pointed out, is that despite swimming getting easier…
  • I workout 8-10 times per week training for an IronMan. I reached my goal weight over 2 years ago and would like to drop another 20 prior to Aug 26th. I have been trying to lose that 20 pounds since August of 2010. If anything the peak training weeks I tend to be up on the scale as opposed to down. I don't know how much…
  • I am right around 35-36 minutes for a 1600M swim. I occassionally work on speed but honestly, I just don't care that much to get faster. I find that I can pickup about a minute by going all out and come out of the pool exhausted or enjoy the swim and come out fresh only losing a minute. Seems like an easy choice to me. If…
  • Friday - 1 hour swim 400 WU, 15 X 100 (10 Seconds Rest) Main Set, 400 Cooldown Saturday - 60 Mile Bike, 90 Minute Run Sunday - Open Water Swim (Couple of Miles?), 30 Mile Bike. Supposed to be big hills which I love so excited about this route.
  • You can still squeeze in some strength training but it's not easy. The battle is that if you are trying to determine if you should go do a arm/back session knowing you have a swim session early the next morning. How do you put in the effort required to build strength and mass and allow time for those muscles you just…
  • I once grabbed 3rd AG(40-44) at a 5K, small race with only about 10 people in my AG and lucky for me only a couple of fast people showed up. I led the MOP crew and nabbed 3rd with a 24:14 time. Woot! I'll take it and not be ashamed. My goal is to continue to run easy and stay injury free so that I can out live or out last…
  • Woot! I got the green light this year for IM Louisville. It's now 99 days away and I am wondering if this is the best or worst Christmas present ever. I guess I will know in a few months. Good luck on your training.

  • I used that and tested at 60. While I am an endurance athlete I know my VO2 Max is not that high. Last time I tested I was around a 48 To Test your VO2 Max for running 1. Using a treadmill on 1% incline or at a track that is flat run for 15 minutes at an easy warmup pace. 2. Once you are completely warmed up run all out…

  • I am a member of my local triathlon club. It's has been a great value with about 250 members and a core of 40-50 pretty active I have gathered a ton of knowledge from the group. Lots of group runs, rides and Sunday we will be doing our first group open water swim of 2012 which I am looking really forward to. In addition to…
  • Not to pick at you but based on your reply you have never been on an Atkins diet. At no point would Atkins suggest zero carb, unlimited protein and lard. There are also lots of sources for potassium that do not require you to eat a "balanced" diet. Atkins done properly is nutrient rich diet that should include large…
  • I started Atkins in March of 2008, that was 100+ pounds ago. I documented the entire journey on my blog... http://www.theurbanprimate.com Since 2011 when I started doing long course endurance events (Ironman, etc,) I increased my carb intake. I am hungry all of the time and 10 pounds heavier. I can maintain easily on…
  • I started at 240ish. Get fitted for shoes from a running store and take it slow. Best if you can find a packed trail at the park or something similar to get started on. Repeat weeks as necessary, which for me was week 3, 5 & 7. I have since run several Half Marathons, a Half Ironman and will be doing my first full Ironman…
  • I am always inspired by people that might be a little larger out running and I think that's true for the majority of runners that I have met and talked with. It seems that the only ones who make comments or the ones that are not doing anything. You're doing great, just keep focused on yourself and ignore those that would…
  • I participated in a Warrior Dash last fall. It was held at a Ski resort which made for lots of hill climbing. Trail running is key as it build strength in your feet and ankles and also lessons the impact of the road on your joints. You might consider finding a partner to go with as these events are more about socializing…
  • My schedule calls r 11-12, There is also a huge 10k tomorrow with about 8-10k entrants. May go run to start and run it Bandit then run back home Good luck in your race
  • Hah, I brought in a dozen donuts to work yesterday. I had oatmeal. If we have a Zombie Apocalypse I want to my co-workers to be fatter and slower than I.
  • Is it possible that the added weight only amplified the OP's insecurities? Why is it just assumed that the OP is somehow the exact same person she was when they began dating. Confidence, at any size, is attractive.
