  • I'm a direct descendent of Edward Fuller (and son Samuel) of the Mayflower, as well :) Also descended from William the Conqueror, and 'Bad King John' Lackland of England...the one nobody liked ;)
  • Moose may be funny-looking, but are crazy-unpredictable. The time I encountered one on the trail, I was with someone else and we were talking--apparently startling it as we rounded a bend into a stream hollow. I didn't even see the moose until it started to run up the hill--about 25 feet away from us. We were lucky it…
  • Find a local running clinic to attend, if you can, and make sure you're running in proper form. Whether overweight or not--if you're landing incorrectly, you'll put undue stress on your knees, feet, etc. A week after I started the C25K program, I attended a running clinic at a local running store and revamped my running…
  • Highly recommend you start with the C25K program. It is terrific, and it builds up endurance gradually. www.C25K.com For half-marathon and marathon training, Hal Higdon has some excellent (free) training programs for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advance level runners. www.halhigdon.com I find following a training program…
  • Print this out, and put it somewhere where you can see it (and read it aloud!) every day: "If you run, you are a runner. It doesn't matter how fast or how far. It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get.…
  • This was October of 2010: About 20-25 lbs (two sizes down) later, Feb of this year: Still a ways to go, but making progress!
  • Good for you! Keep that enthusiasm and positive spirit, and you'll just have more and more fun with each race--regardless of your times. You'll always be faster than your couch, and you're making wonderful strides (pun intended) in your life! ;)
  • Here's an article with a photo of the same model wearing different levels of makeup: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/13/fashion/makeup-makes-women-appear-more-competent-study.html
  • Your first 5K should be about having FUN and reaching that initial goal of finishing the 5K (you can work on speed/times and all that other stuff later!). A color run is a great first-time 5K idea! Hope you have a blast!
  • Purple wristband....love it!
  • SW: 250 CW: 215 GW: 165-170 With a large bone structure, I'm not sure of my final weight. I'll know when I get there!
  • ^^What she said! :)
  • Yes--you definitely want to refrigerate coconut milk after opening. :) Good stuff!
  • Springville has a 5K sponsored by Nestle for Art City days in June. Last year, the race was only $8 to enter. http://www.artcitydays.com/ Runner's Corner sponsors 5K and 8K trail races on their Cascadia Trail Series. The entry fees run about $15 w/out a shirt, $22 with a shirt. You can just register and pay at the store…
  • I love my Altra 'Intuition' (road shoe) and 'Lone Peak' (trail running) shoes. They are cushioned, zero-drop (no heel rise), and keep me on a midfoot strike instead of a heel strike landing. They also widen at the toe-box, so no more cramped toes. They are different, for sure, but they work very well for me.
  • Do try a light box, and maybe have your vitamin D levels checked. Low vitamin D can be associated with depression and SAD--especially if you aren't getting enough vitamin D from sunlight sources in the fall/winter months. Good luck!
  • Do it! What is your plan/program? I completed the C25K program at the end of 2010 and it's been such a positive change in my life!
  • Finally posting an introduction here. I think the tough thing about allergies/sensitivities, is how even the doctors are flummoxed. Sensitivities, especially. If you can treat it (ie: an allergy), it's something they can talk about...but with a sensitivity--which a patient obviously knows they are experiencing, but which…
  • I saw that listed and thought it would be a great one to add to my list, too! Waiting for the website to go live to find out more about it. :)
  • Hi! Thanks for starting this group! I finished the Couch-to-5K program late 2010, and I've kept running through 2011--adding trail running last spring. Who knew running could be so much fun? Challenging, yes, but FUN, too :)
  • What are you doing differently, running in cold weather? Are you layering, and wearing synthetic/wicking fabrics? Are you wearing a hat? When the weather goes below 40 F, I add a base layer and wear gloves. Below 35F and I add a fleece headband that also covers my ears....I'm not a fan of hats unless it's snowing! Below 25…
  • Your first 5K is about having a blast and enjoying the run!! (There will be plenty of time to work on speed later.) Just enjoy the energy of the crowd and the fact you're achieving the goal of participating in a 5K! If you have to walk intervals, do it. ...If you're like me, you'll have a year of 5Ks to follow!!
  • Where I was Saturday: So much of this trail (but not this particular stretch of it) is too steep for me to run up, so I power-walk the ups and run the level/down. But...I have to admit I stop all-too-often to take photos on my outings.
  • Change the capital letters IMG to small case img and it will work:
  • Came across this mule deer (during deer hunting season, yet!) a few weeks ago. I was able to grab my camera and get a few photos before it ran off. If only I could run like that deer....!
  • I love my new Altra Lone Peak trail shoes: and my colorful Dirty-Girl Gaiters: I also have IceBug MR4 trail shoes for when it gets icy on the trails.
  • Smartwool socks! (Or any merino wool trail sock--Costco has some good ones.) Wool keeps your feet warm--even when they get wet. A Gore-tex lined (waterproof) trail shoe also will keep the water out.
  • I didn't start 'running' until a year ago. Was always a walker/hiker. But my need to amp up my exercise led to jogging, and once I started on the trails, the roads just never could compare. A 5K on the road takes forever, but an 8K on the trails is a blast....even if I'm slow. I love the Wasatch trails...and in the winter,…
  • I'm a trail turtle myself--and I love the BST!! Nothing quite like the Wasatch mountains!
  • LOL...Yes. I did, too! And I'd been hiking and walking before that and thought I was in pretty good shape--but running is different! Keep at it--and remember to give yourself a recovery day in between (even if you're feeling great...recovery days make all the difference!). Congratulations, and good luck on your C25K goals!…
