  • I agree that the main cause of obesity is consuming more calories than are burned. Giving up sugar to lose weight only helps if you don't replace those items with other foods. So passing on a slice of pie and opting to eat a bowl of chips is not going to help with weight loss. For years I would include occasional sweet…
  • Loving this thread, especially the tips on historical fiction. I would like to add "The Kitchen House" and "Someone Knows My Name" as wonderful books in the genre. I also enjoyed The Storyteller and The Book Thief. I recently read "The Glass Castle" which is non-fiction and loved it. Gone Girl is on my to-read list.
  • Abs, definitely. It doesn't matter how old I am or how thin I am, I never have flat abs. I'm 47 and a size 2, just like I was 20 years and 3 kids ago, but even then I had a small pooch. No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to win that battle. Genetics win.
  • Sounds wonderful, can't wait to make these!
  • I love blackened chicken so I will definitely try this. Any suggestions on a good blackened rub?
  • Do you like Veggie burgers? They have a lot of protein and are low in fat. Also, light hot dogs are a good source of protein. I buy 93% lean ground beef and make burgers too. I don't eat protein bars but I know there are tons out there, maybe that would be an option. Atkins makes a lot of bars and snacks that are high in…
  • Forgot to mention this: for lunch, I like to have the Tysons Grilled & Ready Chicken breasts on hand. They come in a green bag in the frozen food section. They are already cooked so I just heat them in the microwave for two minutes, add a slice of low fat cheese on top, and eat place it between two slices of Light wheat…
  • Low fat, light Greek yogurt - I like the Dannon Light & Fit flavors. I also love low fat cottage cheese. I add some cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice to it and a packet of Stevia, and it's SO good.
  • When I want something sweet, I usually eat some fruit. Greek yogurt is also good. I'm not into chocolate, but I hear the Atkins bars are good.
  • I do intense cardio (Turbo Fire) 5-6 days per week and light weights 3 days per week. I also walk 45 minutes daily so that my high energy dog doesn't drive me crazy in the evenings.
  • When I go on vacation I try to make healthy food choices but I don't stress over it. Try to get exercise when you can, such as walking or biking, but again, don't stress. Once you get home, start right where you left off, and you will be fine. Enjoy your trip!
  • These pictures are incredible. Everyone is very inspiring. I was feeling a bit lazy when I sat down at the computer a few minutes ago, but now after seeing these before and after pictures, I'm very motivated to go work out now. Congrats everyone!
  • If you want to limit your sugar, avoid sweets like pies, cookies, cake, etc. If you crave something sweet, go for something healthier like fruit or yogurt.
  • Before: I can't ever get the body back that I had 20 years ago. I'm 45 and have 3 kids, it's impossible. After: If I would eat and exercise the way I did 20 years ago, I can! And now I do!
  • Never thought about doing it this way, thanks for the suggestion!
  • I stick with my MFP program faithfully most of the time. But one or two days every month, usually on a weekend, I give myself a day off. These are usually days when I have a party to attend or I have company. If I want to munch on some snacks or have a second burger, I do it. I don't scrutinize the calories. Then the next…
  • WOW!!! What an amazing transformation! It sounds like you were transformed on the inside as well, and that's just as important. I bet you can't wait to show off that beach body this summer!
  • I gave up bread and crackers and I have stuck to it. I have kept my weight off. Last year I gave up sweets and I still don't eat them, so I'm hoping my bread and crackers days are behind me as well. I certainly don't miss them!
  • It's perfectly normal to over indulge during vacation, so please do not worry or beat yourself up. Wake up tomorrow morning and remind yourself that it's time to get back to your regular routine and start it. That's it. Just pick up where you left off before vacation and you will get back on track in no time!
  • Looking great!
  • Looking great, everyone! You truly motivate me!
  • This is the thread I read when I wake up and don't feel like exercising. I look at the amazing before and after pics and then get my butt in gear. Great job everyone, you all are very inspiring! Every single one of you!
  • Last year I gave up sweets and salty foods for Lent. I allowed myself what I considered natural sweets, such as fruit. This way I could have something sweet if I wanted it. I believe it's more of the added sugar that isn't healthy. I still eat things like unsweetened applesauce that I sweeten with Stevia, light & fit greek…
  • That is awesome! I have never been a soda drinker, but I must have my 2 cups of coffee in the morning. I kicked my sugar addiction last year so I know how you feel about getting rid of a bad habit!
  • Exactly what I was thinking. Also, chicken breast and fish.
  • Greek yogurt and cottage cheese
  • Like others said, there must be something you like. I cannot stand cardio machines of any kind. In fact, I'm no fan of gyms at all. So I have exercise DVD's that I love, (Turbo Fire, Hip Hop Abs, Zumba) that I use in the cold winter months, and then when it's nice I enjoy long walks, bike rides, and roller blading. I also…
  • Great tips mentioned, massage will be great, but in the meantime, try soaking in an Epson Salt bath. You can buy a bag for $5.00 or less at any grocery store or pharmacy, and add a cup or two to warm bath water. It's a great way to relieve sore muscles!
  • I don't know if it's age as much as it is lifestyle. When I was in my 20's, I was very active. I would run 4 miles before I would go to work, walked two miles on my lunch break, and would walk again in the evening. Weekends were spent taking long bike rides, spending a couple hours in the gym, etc. At 5'4", I was 110…
