  • The Athlete's Kitchen Nancy Clark MS RD CSSD As I write this article, I'm watching The Biggest Loser on TV. Many people have been asking my opinion of this popular show, so I feel obliged to scream out: It's terrible! It’s horrible! It's abusive! I also feel like throwing my shoe at the TV. Here’s why— The messages in The…
  • I went to a fitness clinic that also does VO2 max tests (same principle but to get your heart rate zones for training and max HR). Your doctor would probably be able to suggest a place. oh and by the way I'm in Calgary, Alberta and the cost was $139 canadian.
  • I thought I would share my results from getting a Resting metabolic rate test (RMR; also referred to as BMR.) I am a 30 year old female, 138 lbs, 5ft 6in. To lose 1/2 lb a week, the guided goals on this website suggest 1450 calories a day and the BMR tool calculates that my BMR is 1363. Two years ago, I was 165 lbs and…
  • do you have to kneed the dough or let it rise before cooking? how long do you bake it for? I'd like to try this recipe. thanks
  • I'm in Calgary and I've found them frozen shelled and unshelled at natural food stores, occasionally at Superstore or Safeway, and as frozen containers at Costco.

  • You can actually change your nutrient tracker under the food tab. Go to settings and then the drop down menus under nutrition let you pick sodium, etc.
  • Bike liners? Mine are sugoi which is a cycling brand. so check out their website at sugoi.com or I've also seen them at MEC which is an outdoor store in Canada. They do mail-order as well. www.mec.ca
  • On a short ride, I can get away without wearing bike shorts but will wear padded bike shorts most of the time. Even with them on, my pelvic area still gets sore after 60-80 minutes. You could probably find a decent pair for about $50 and then you'll have a pair if you want to ride your bike in the summer too. That's what…
  • Yellow pepper you're so right about technical reading...it doesn't matter what time of day I'm doing it, it'll usually put me to sleep in 30 min or less.
  • I need at least 8 hours to be productive and happy the next day...9 would be optimal. I usually go to bed around 9 pm, asleep by 9:30 and then up around 6 am. It's a lot of sleeping but it really helps. The more you exercise, the more your body needs some sleep. If you do a search on the internet, you might be able to find…
  • Yes. I'm training for a couple in Western Canada this summer. probably 2 sprints and one olympic length.
  • You're right...twice a month is definitely a good excuse for eating out! I get tired of the packed lunches too.

  • Check out this website www.runnersworld.com they've got a beginners section and beginners forum. The biggest thing is to take it slow and like PedalHound suggested let your joints adjust. You have the cardio endurance to do an hour but your body won't be used to the impact. My biggest problem was running too fast when I…
  • Next time you need to get groceries from town, why don't you pack a lunch with sandwiches and fruit or even buy some groceries that you can make into a lunch. A loaf of bread and some meat or cheese. You're probably buying it anyways. When I'm out doing errands for awhile, I try to remember to bring some water, a granola…

  • I think it depends on what your goal is. If you want to work on you cardio fitness, do cardio first. If you're trying to build muscle, weight training first.
  • I do a quick strength training session twice a week after a run. it takes about 40 min. lunges squats step ups hamstring curl with a ball pushups tricep biceps lateral raises or shoulder press do above 3*30 sec each with 30 sec rest 10 min core 10 min stretching
  • Why don't you try the couch to 5 km plan? I think there is another post on the forum that talks about it. here's the link. It's a great beginner plan. the biggest problem for beginners is usually trying to go to fast. http://coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml good luck!
  • I'm going to go run on the treadmill at lunch today for about 40 min but really want to go outside. I just can't seem to get the will power to face the wind and cold. It's about -25C or -39C with the windchill.
  • My bag lunch typically contains bag of cut up veggies egg sandwich or peanut butter and banana or leftover stew, stirfry. fruit I usually make veggie bags on Sunday for the week and boil some eggs for sandwiches or snack. I have just bought some frozen smoked salmon that I was going to make a sandwich with low fat…
  • Would it be possible to start horse back riding now instead of using it as a treat? I've heard from other riders that it is a good workout and you need to have a lot of leg strength to do it. Why don't you check how much exercies you would get from it? Losing weight for me finally clicked once I started to do activities I…
  • If you have the money and are curious, you could have a max VO2 test done where your run on a treadmill while breathing into a tube and increasing effort. They will determine what your maximum HR actually is and what the corresponding zones would be. It's about $150. I had this done about two years ago and my max HR was…
  • I bought men's tight shorts that are longer. I found the women's were too short and would ride up but the men's versions are usually longer and go down to the knee. light capris work too if you're running inside this winter.
  • I completely understand your frustration. It happens with my boyfriend about once or twice a year. I think that they just don't worry if we're out and completely trust us and so project that we would think/feel the same way. I usually talk to him the day after, once he's sobered up and explain how I felt. I consider it…
  • I've come along way on this too. When I finished university and starting working (at 24), I was kind of lost for a year or two. I was about 25 pounds heavier than today and didn't really have any interests. My old interests were school, partying and my boyfriend. Then after moving across the country and starting a new job…
  • I've found tahini at the organic grocery store in the same area as peanut butter and almond butter. Perhaps it'll be in the organic section at a regular grocery store.

  • I have a thought about toes going numb on the elliptical. I don't use the elliptial but I have had my feet go slightly numb when running longer distances, over an hour. I think it was due to my feet swelling over the hour with the increased activity. Now I keep my laces a little loose over the top of my feet but relatively…
  • I ran 6 km this morning at 5:30 am in Calgary... which is a little early for me but I woke up before my alarm and decided to get my run in before a big snowstorm hits us. I don't mind running in the snow but it drives me crazy to run on unshovelled sidewalks that have iced over.
  • I think kcal is the same as cal. 200 calories is about right for 2 tbsp of peanut butter
  • When I started to drink lots of water, I was going to the bathroom every 30 min to 1 hour...my work colleagues thought I was crazy. But once your body gets used to having lots of water, it gets better. On the plus side, I get to walk around every hour instead of being stuck all day at my desk. about feeling sick, no I…
  • I would go see a physiotherapist and see if there are strengthening exercises you can do. Also they can determine where your knee pain is due to..it bands, lower back, etc.
