  • It sounds like an allergy to fruit. I have a few friends who are allergic to fresh fruits, but are ok with them if they are cooked. It has something to do with the way the proteins break down when they are cooked/heated.
  • In addition to proper shoes and stretching... Try switching to the elliptical for a while. It will be much easier on your joints, so you can still get your cardio in while your joints play catch up and get used to the exercise. Also, think about supplements. I take glucosamine for joints and fish oil for ligaments.
  • I like BiPro whey protein isolate. They have one that's unflavored and has no sweetener. 1 scoop is 80 calories for 20g protein. I like that I can add it to just about anything (like any flavor smoothie, or chocolate milk, etc.) for a protein boost without clashing flavors or using up extra calories for the sugar.
  • 5' 1" here, current weight 129lbs, about 28-29% BF. I've been anywhere from 95lbs (about 9 years ago) to 140lbs (last year), so I already have an idea of what my body looks like at different weights. But even when I was smaller, I was still "skinny fat", so my focus now is more on reducing my BF% than getting to a specific…
  • The "strength training" exercise entries are really more for tracking your weights/reps, and they don't show any calories burned. However, if you search under the "cardio" section, there is at least one "strength training" option that you can add to your diary. Be careful with adding any of MFP's exercise to your diary and…
  • I sympathize with your icky campus cafeteria food dilemma. I had to live on campus and have a meal plan freshman year, and only had a microfridge in my dorm. Hot plates and other appliances weren't allowed. Not much fit in that tiny fridge, either, and the "freezer" space was laughable. Stuff I often ate from the…
  • I also have to be at work early, and never really wanted to lose sleep in order to get up earlier to do breakfast before work. I typically have one (sometimes two) of the following for breakfast after I get to my desk: -Greek yogurt -Granola bar -Banana -Instant oatmeal (or sometimes I make my own "instant oatmeal" baggies…
  • a) Mazda3: Pretty good little car. A friend of mine has a new ('12?) one and loves it. Fun to drive and great gas mileage. b) Dodge Dart: I haven't driven one, and don't know much about them. c) Ford Focus: I drove a rental and just plain hated it. Sluggish, bad visibility, and not that nice in general. Just no. d) Hyundai…
  • FYI, I read an article about that ice cream....when tested, they had a heck of a lot more calories than shown on the label. (I think it was 50%+)
  • I've been dealing with the same problem with one of my dogs since my husband has been traveling for work recently. But I've also been working long hours, so the dog is locked up more than normal. Plus, he doesn't cooperate with me as well as he does with the hubby. I ended up taking him to doggie day care one day, and I…
  • Of course, the best way to get protein is naturally, through foods. But if you're looking for a suppliment, whey protein (as opposed to soy) is the way to go. I started out with GNC's Amplified Wheybolic protein powder. The chocolate is good (esp with milk), the vanilla tastes too fake for me. It works if you want…
  • Some of this has been said already, but here's my 2 cents: 1. Log everything! Even small bites, cheat days, and weekends. This helped me realise just how much my weekends were undoing all my progress during the week. 2. Eat! Don't starve yourself. You need fuel for those workouts. (Plus, when I don't eat enough, I'm SUPER…
  • I have a Tupperware steamer that I LOVE. I just toss some veggies in there (broccoli, spinach, green beans, etc.), add some water, and mocrowave for a few minutes. Healthy way to cook vegetables without losing a ton of nutrients, and it's really easy. I highly reccomend getting a steamer, and Tupperware is a good one.
  • - Log your food and pre-log your dinner, so you know exactly how many calories you have. This way you might stop and think "I can't 'afford' to eat these chips!" - Brush your teeth or chew minty gum. - Drink water! - Don't buy the snacks. (If you live with others, ask them to store their snacks somewhere else.) I don't buy…
  • At this point, I drink MOSTLY water. Here's what I did: - Seriously cut back on my soda. Stopped buying it and stopped getting it when I went out. After a while, I didn't really miss it. I still keep a few diet sodas around for when I really crave one, but I very rarely drink soda now. - Started mixing my sweet tea with…
  • ^^This. If I'm too restrictive during the week, I get to the point where I want to eat everything in sight on the weekends. I started doing better when I actually started tracking what I eat on weekends, instead of considering it my "cheat days". Whether you restrict yourself on weekends or not, it still makes you think…
  • "Sandwich Thins" ~100 cal per sandwich (There are several brands that make them, they're like thin pita buns) Merita Lite Hamburger Bun ~80 cal per bun Pitas Wraps Try a lettuce wrap
  • I've been toying with the idea of lifting heavy for a while now, and this thread is great motivation! I have a newbie question(s), though: How do you learn to do the lifts? Did you watch videos? Hire a trainer? Ask random people at the gym? Join a class? If you lift at home, did you start out in a gym first?
  • Some ideas: Good running shoes (go to a specialty store and get fitted...this was the best thing I've ever done for my feet) Hand weights, dumbells, kettlebells, etc Yoga/fitness mat Resistance bands Over-door pull-up bar Headlamp (if you plan to run when it's dark) Stability ball And for a higher price range: something…
  • I reccomend going into someplace like GNC and talking to someone. Meal replacement shakes and protein shakes are very different, and there are different types of each. They should be able to recommend something that fits your goals and lifestyle. They might even be able to let you sample some. ETA: I got GNC's chocolate…
  • Also check out hungry-girl.com. She has some really tasty recipes, great tips, substitutions for lightening up foods, and she also does healthy imitations of foods you'll find at restaurants.
  • Also, stuff I didn't like: greek yogurt (I didn't care for their brand...but I love chobani and fage!) moshi balls (green tea ice cream covered in some sort of dough) tuna wrap (it was just kinda soggy)
  • My hubby and I have recently discovered Trader Joe's. We haven't tried a whole lot yet, but here are a few we really liked: creamy spinach dip (frozen) fresh salsa fresh hummus pizza dough, white (whole wheat didn't cook right) pizza sauce orange chicken (frozen) fried rice (frozen...goes with the orange chicken) Not…
  • I agree with getting the kids to workout with you. Not only does it help you reach your goals, but it's setting a good example for your kids and getting them used to the idea of exercise. There are a bunch of workouts you can do with your kids: dance games, walks or bike rides, going to the playground, even stretching and…
  • I don't work out much at home, but when I do it's very basic. What I use: Free weights Yoga/exercise mat Also good: Resistance bands/ropes Jump rope Pull-up bar Heart rate monitor Workout DVD's (lots of good recommendations on the forums)
  • Wow, lots of debating going on here...so I didn't read through the whole thread. But I'm going to throw in my two cents. I was homeschooled my entire life (along with my 5 siblings). I never went to public school (well, not until college). I have seen homeschooling done "right", and I have seen it done "wrong". If anyone…
  • I also got a sample packet in the mail. I mixed it into one of my usual smoothies, and it was awesome! I couldn't even tell it was there. I'm thinking about getting more for adding into various recipes. Anyone use this long-term?
  • I recently decided to try out quinoa also. The best thing I like to do with it (so far) is to use it in stir-fry instead of rice. I've been looking for other quinoa recipes, so I'd love to hear other people's suggestions!
  • I've seen a burger (called the "Double Corinary") that has: 4 burger patties american cheese chili bacon fried eggs sandwiched between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches It's delicious! :blushing: I had the smaller kid's version, and I could still only eat half of it in one sitting. I wish I could find a large enough picture.…
