I'm just thinking out loud here. This kind of brings up a good point. Would we ever prescribe purging as a response to morbid obesity? Then again, maybe some of the consequences of self administered purging would be alleviated by this. Also, this device governs it, which would be difficult to teach to someone. I just don't…

Are you even trying to understand their viewpoint? If you were, you might realize that by saying "killing kipping is a way of attaching attacking a weak point" you're kind of validating what they are saying. Also, kipping itself could be considered a partial rep in preparation for a bar muscle up, which is a functional…

My wife has made me do a few kickboxing classes on youtube. I can't remember what they were, but they are probably the first two or three that pop up when you search. There are also a bunch of fitness apps which have workouts out there. My favorites are fitnet and Spartan bodyweight system.

Right, I just wanted to expand on the analogy. As a CrossFitter, I took no offense.
-
In that vein, I think it is important to point out that the goal of the kipping pull up is different from the that of a strict pull up. They are different movements with different objectives...like burpees stopping at the top of the push up position.

Awesome example. You catching this, grasshopper?

I did not read the study, yet. which page of the thread?

OP, I suggest you check out the main low carber daily forum group here in MFP. It's where most of us Ketofiles tend to hang out: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/394-low-carber-daily-forum-the-lcd-group

I, personally, would like to see them be able to override it somehow and take responsibility for themselves. But then again, I have strange viewpoints on personal responsibility and freedom.

Cool thanks.

I think it's great, but i am leary of increasing hormone levels unless they find that one is deficient in that hormone. As far as I know, that is not a known cause of compulsive overeating.

Empty your cup, young grasshopper.

When you go to the level 1course, they will teach about scaling.
-
regarding this situation, are you talking about an occurrence at a crossfit box?
-
That actually is a type of burpee. I said the same thing when I first saw it, but a lot of people teach that technique. It is the same concept as knee push ups or kipping pull-ups. It's just a different movement. The question is whether or not it is a REAL danger to themselves or others. Realizing my limitations, I am…

So that would mean it is the cap. In other words, anybody with a BMR estimated to be at 2199 or lower will have a 1200 calorie goal. That's one of the things I don't like about MFP. I don't think it does a good job of communicating that.
-
Is 1200 the default or is it just the cap that everybody ends up at due to their desire to lose weight faster?
-
Well, most women would probably lose on that number, the same could be said for 1100 or 1000. Or do you mean that people just blindly prescribe 1200 calories to all women? That would be ill-advised. Or do you mean the that 1200 calories being the line drawn where people think it is safe?

What is the myth?

I think a lot of the ambiguity comes from the fact that addiction very often includes dependence, especially in the case of drugs (which seems to be the default comparison for many regardless of their position on the debate). In general, when one says they are addicted to drugs, the general population reads that as being…

I guess it all depends on your experience. I have never been to a face to face meeting. My whole program is online and on the phone. I attend big book meetings like the ones Lisa described. I was "raised" by Lawrie C and Joe and Charlie and the good folks at a vision 4 you. Specifics of food plans never come up...well not…

I linked the addiction vs dependence thread in a few posts before. Here it is to save you the trouble: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10388272/addiction-versus-dependence Word.

I actually agree on most of this. The only item of the 5 that would have any relevance is item 4. That would be an indicator of addiction according to the definitions both Stef and I provided. Item 5 would indicate dependence, but I'm pretty sure physical dependence has never been indicated in any of the studies I've read.…
-
The definitions from the sources you provided. The latter reflect physical dependence in which the body adapts to the drug, requiring more of it to achieve a certain effect (tolerance) and eliciting drug-specific physical or mental symptoms if drug use is abruptly ceased (withdrawal). The key terms of tolerance and…

Yeah, me too. I think there are likely to be many reasons. Most people will fall into different categories based on their personal situation. I think that is a definite probability.
-
I thought we were talking about why people overeat even when they know they are doing it and know there are adverse consequences. I do think you make a good point though, but it is probably off topic, even more so than addiction.
-
I do not believe sugar to be a substance on which one could become dependent. It would have to trigger withdrawal syndrome...which it doesn't. However, one can still be addicted to it in the same way that people are addicted to gambling or shopping. Alcohol on the other hand does create a dependency. I am not addicted to…

??? Yeah, but if you are not using them according to your text book, wouldn't you be wrong? Your first link was just general and nothing was returned when I searched for "dependence". Your second link defines it as follows: You stated before that you felt one could form a dependency based on habits around food but not…
