  • I really like my HRM also, but personally - I only wear it when I'm "formally working-out". I figure that I ended-up gaining the weight, then subsequently losing the weight using the caloric guidelines that MFP suggests (so I think MPFs BMR calculations are pretty-much spot-on!). I burn-off what "I lose in exercising", but…
  • I'd think that a slab would be louder than "a crawlspace", if it's dirt under your home. Concrete reflects sound whereas dirt would absorb a lot of it. I'd be worried about the amount of noise the treadmill makes, and buy a quiet brand. We had a Sole treadmill (until Tropical Storm Irene drowned it last summer), it was…
  • Personally, I'd buy hiking shoes for hiking & a lightweight workout shoe for your indoor work. I know... absolutely no help at all, right??
  • I use Endomondo with a Zephyr HxM heartrate montor, both which talk to my phone.
  • I'm in... check your messages!
  • IDK, I have this "thing" about the thought of wearing a head light (I know, really stupid)... anyone out there try Knuckle Lights as an alternative?
  • Good point - I'm a relative newbie at running in-general, and a total "dark running virgin", I'm sure that this will be an educational experience, this is a good thread to follow. I have one of those lamps that macdiver speaks of, perhaps I'll end-up with that around my waist, in the end.
  • I'm going passive - I just purchased a bunch of those reflectorized snap arm bands, I figure I'll put one on each ankle and arm... that should make me be seen. (I hope!)
  • I too had problems when first starting with Endomondo, as it turns-out, I've discovered that the GPS in my phone is just TERRIBLE, and it wasn't the fault of Endomondo. As it (also) turns-out, I happen to have an old Bluetooth GPS receiver that plays well with Endomondo (with the help of another free Android app), so i…
  • Before I got my phone & installed Endomondo, I (we, my Wife & I) mapped out several courses that are 1 mile, and we time ourselves to those (mapped) miles. As it turns-out, we take 15 minutes to walk those miles, almost to the second, so I know that we walk at 4 mph. Endomondo confirms our speed. Your math seems correct to…
  • If you have access to a gym w/ Cybex equipment, try the Cybex ARC trainer. I'm not a great fan of ellipticals or treadmills, but there's something about the ARC trainer! Zero impact, it'll get your heart pumping and body sweating!
  • Sounds to me like you're listening to your body... this is good. It's OK to walk if you feel the need to walk, it's OK not to push to the point of pain, also. Think about it - YOU'RE A RUNNER!!!! Being sedentary most of my life, It took me a long while to wrap my brain around this revelation, but it's true, I'm a runner…
  • Agreed! Look closer at your hometown downtown, there WILL be great places to eat, with food that will taste better and be (albeit only somewhat) better for you. Ma & Pa restaurants can't compete when it comes to making themselves visible, so you'll definitely have to look closer - but they ARE there!
  • Interesting, I use my phone when working-out - yesterday for example I walked (4mph) for 20 minutes as warmup/cooldown, and ran 5K in 29:46. I use Endomondo with a heart rate monitor, it calculated my total calories used was 673. When I plug the numbers into MFP (20 mins walking @ 4mph & 30 mins running @ 6mph), it…
  • I feel your pain, regarding not wanting to run in public... I felt the same way myself for the longest time. That aside, I'd say that either treadmill or track running beats couch surfing every time. I've discovered that I really enjoy running outside, and find myself feeling a bit wobbly on a treadmill. Many feel that any…
  • I couldn't jog for 30 seconds when I started-out... when I tried thought I was going to puke! I began by walking for 2 months, then decided to try the C25K program. I now run 5K 3-4 times a week. Yep, you can do it! Nope, 3 minutes isn't horrible, its a good start. Best of luck to you!
  • Agreed! I'm older, and have had some back surgeries, so I personally feel the need to walk-2-warm-up (I do 10 min. ea. warmup/cooldown). When I shorten this time, by bod gets mad at me. I hate it when that happens!
  • I just Googled it - YIKES, I don't think I'm that adventurous!
  • While I'm certainly no expert on running (I've been running for 9 months now), 2 things come to mind: 1) shoes - are you sure you have good running shoes that fit your foot? Wouldn't lack of arch support strain your calves? 2) running on a crowned road - this one is a killer for me - very rough on the feet, calves and…
  • I'm an endomondo user also. Be aware that the GPS chips in some phones are really quite terrible! I use and external Bluetooth GPS receiver paired to my phone instead of the built-in GPS. You would not believe some of my workout results while using the built-in GPS :explode:
  • I know NOTHING about free weight training, but I think I got about 15 hernias just by watching this video! :-}
  • You said "no thanks", then they were rude-enough to shove it in your face, I see no reason why you can't toss the offending food into the trash - in front of their face. Sometimes you just need to hit some people over the head with your (negative) response. So, if it was gourmet donuts - I bet that they won't be so fast to…
  • 10 minute walk (warm-up) - 5K run - 10 Minute walk (cool-down). I REALLY needed to do this, because we had a family party day... junk food hell!! Still about 200 cals over my goal today. I'll get-'em tomorrow!
  • Funny, I've been thinking-about the same thing, but for different reasons. I have around 12 more pounds that I'd like to be rid-if, but I've been stuck a my current weight for several months now. I've read on these boards that adding calories may sometimes actually help in getting over "a plateau". So I plugged-in 1Lb./wk…
  • What ^^^HE^^^ sez - I was the same way, total non-athlete. I started walking around a track, after several months of this - ramping-up the speed, I decided to try to run... it was humbling, couldn't run for 30 seconds without feeling winded and getting a cramp in my side. I discovered that 80% of my problems were in my…
  • Sorry to see the original picture gone - here's another... with extra Bacon!! :-)
  • I use Endomondo & a Zephyr HxM heart rate monitor myself, and I've had nothing but difficulties with the GPS/aGPS in the phone. This will cause mileage discrepancies, look at the path you've run, does it track accurately, or are corners cut-off? My solution is to clip an Bluetooth GPS receiver that I had knocking-about to…
  • ^^^^^ This!! ^^^^^
  • Those heart rates seem very high, especially for weight training. If I get up to 160 BPM while running, I feel like I'm gonna have a heart attack! I can't imagine an anaerobic workout would give you these heart rates at a constant level... but, hey - what do I know!
