Using a treadmill in a home with a crawl space...

Does anyone have any experience using a treadmill in a home built on a crawl space instead of a concrete slab? Is it extremely loud? My concern is that our office (where it will be set up) is in between my kids rooms. I'm worried about the noise waking them up. Right now I run outside (way too early in the morning), but with the cold and inclement weather coming I'd rather stick to the treadmill - plus I feel much safer running inside rather than by myself outside at 5:30am.

Thanks!

I'd think that a slab would be louder than "a crawlspace", if it's dirt under your home. Concrete reflects sound whereas dirt would absorb a lot of it. I'd be worried about the amount of noise the treadmill makes, and buy a quiet brand. We had a Sole treadmill (until Tropical Storm Irene drowned it last summer), it was very quiet & smooth-running. We were very pleased with how quiet it was.

Perhaps do an experiment where you or your husband jumps around (good heavy jumps) in the office while the other checks what noise you can hear in the kids rooms.
  • Thanks for the responses. I think I am just going to stick with outside, it's just way too loud in that office for the treadmill. Plus, it's just so much better running outside!
