  • I agree, these should not be rules! But as suggestions to help educate, I think they can be helpful. They are simplified, generalizations to be sure, and there are no absolutes. But I do think they are helpful signposts for those who have never paid attention to nutrition before. Grocery stores are typically layed out with…
  • I'll chime in here. I thought I'd check my own posting history before I responded. What do you know! I'm a one hit wonder! Why is that? I'd say it's because I came on and tried to make a connection some where. I don't believe I ever asked anyone to feel free to add me. Is this a sad thing? I don't think so. I think it is a…
  • So if you live in the US a lot of what drives the medical industry is the insurance industry. I recently learned that there is no code for nutrition advice for doctors to be reimbursed from insurance companies. Besides the amount of training a general practitioner may receive regarding diet and nutrition is really limited.…
  • CICO definitely has its place in weight loss but the digestive system is so much more complicated. The Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung is a great resource for learning about how insulin effects weight gain and loss and the hunger hormones in your body. There is a lot of great and new information being discovered all the…
  • I had premium for awhile but stopped logging over a year ago. I tried coming back to the free version and found the ads distracting, and the ability to connect my Fitbit didn't seem to be an option. Clearly there have been a bunch of changes and I am finding it a little squirrelly to navigate. But I've got a database of…
  • I've been reading the book, Cbowman. Like you I've found a straight "calorie in vs calorie out" approach is often not enough. Eating 1500 calories of junk food is not the same as 1500 calories of good nutritious whole foods. I think there is a lot to learn from the book, even if you choose not to follow the diet. But it is…
  • Ahh. I've been looking at these. Counting on Santa this December but also want a watch that will track swimming distance......talk about being addicted to electronic feedback!!
  • I had a Fitbit and it seemed to work fine. It is a great tool, I think, if you are just trying to increase the amount of time that you move around in a day. I had been quite sedentary and it did motivate me to get out of the chair and moving more. But when it came to serious workouts at the gym, it just wasn't up for the…
  • Walk out the front door and it's soccer field and track. To the right is a playground and to the left is the road. They do have a smoothie counter inside the gym but for the most part I try to stay away from there. Too much sugar. I'd rather come home and make my own smoothie!
  • Boy have I been clueless on this count. I do weigh some things, but most things I measure.....*sigh* I don't know that my scale has an option of measuring in grams. This would be more convenient than measuring in ounces......but oh well. time to start weighing.
  • Great Ideas here. I don't know that I have much to add. Just today I put "limit uncontrolled eating" as one of my goals. I had several action steps that are the same as others here. Keeping trigger foods out of the house, or at least out of sight. Eating some protein with every snack or meal, logging everything no matter…
  • Leave nothing out on the counter or within easy reach, except healthy, nutritious foods. Even those can cause a problem if they are calorie dense and a trigger to eat uncontrollably. I have had to ask my husband to put things high up in a cabinet out of my reach and have moved my nuts to the back of the fridge. I will…
  • welcome! How nice that you and your hubby are doing this together! I think having in house support really makes a difference! Good luck to you.

  • I'm all about the almond butter because of the micro nutrients and because I prefer the taste. It can be considerably more expensive, though. But in the end I think it is really just a personal choice. I'm a big fan of nuts in general. . Nutella is the devil, at least for me, and so I wouldn't dare bring it in the house.
  • What a great way to get to know everyone. I'm 56 , married 30 years and the mother of 2 grown men who are now both married and out on their own. I work part time as a massage therapist, love to bird watch and envy all of you country folk who are out there living on 10+ acres and enjoying nature. I live in the suburbs…
  • Hi, Great! I am really taking a much more mindful approach this year myself. I've done this weight loss thing a dozen times, sometimes with fabulous, but always short lived results. I suspect that is because I'm not really addressing the issues that prompt me to eat. I'll be interested to hear how the hypnosis works for…
  • Nice Job! You have done well and it shows. Thanks for the inspiration!
  • Hey! Just what I'm looking for as well! I am a member at ClubWorx though I'm ashamed to say I haven't been in over a month...I won't bore you with the list of excuses. But I am headed back today and would love to know some others that are also there to help stay motivated
  • 56 years old here and though I've used MFP off and on I've not really done much to connect with the site on a social level. I'm going to give that a try this time around and see if that helps. Getting back to the gym today and though I'm not eating much healthier than I was yesterday, I am at least tracking everything I do…
  • Like you, I'm "putting a plan together" which actually is starting! I am really becoming aware of the behaviors that are causing me the most problems and exploring the best approach to making this a doable way of life. This is not my first rodeo and I know that moving mindfully is what makes this the most workable. Not the…
  • Great thread! Lot's of good ideas and a really good illustration of both boredom eating and habit eating. It is a nearly mindless move for me to grab food when I sit down in the evening in front of the TV. I'm tired, not necessarily bored but, too tired to read or become involved in some kind of project. So if I"m in front…
  • I'm definitely a "comfort" eater. I eat to change my brain chemistry which tends to be low on serotonin anyway. So evening is a really difficult time because I tend to eat to calm the agitation I feel when I'm tired but it's too early to bed. I also suffer with sugar cravings, not surprising since it is so addictive.
  • A million day ones is the story of my life(all 56 years of it).. Those of us who have life long weight issues will face this particular challenge every day of our lives. We will never "arrive" at a weight and then be able to eat whatever we want. We will always be in the process of weight management. What seems to work for…
  • Wellfleet, especially Duck Harbor. Great place for letting my dog take a run. But now that winter is about over it will be back on the leash for her! I really love this whole area from Provincetown to Barnstable.
  • Welcome to MFP. You have gotten some great advice. I noticed in your post that you say you have obsessive issues with food. I understand this because I do as well. What this means is that along with the finding all the practical solutions to changing your eating habits there is going to be an inner thought process that…
  • My short term goal was to drink 6-8 glasses of water each day and to record that along with my food in my food log. I could have done a better job with this, but I'm still really pleased with results. I was pretty dedicated to the procedure early on, and continue to drink far more water then I was before I started this…
  • My favorite fast food is Chipotle Grill carnitas salad topped with lots of guacamole, and of course a few tortilla chips on the side. Ran the whole thing as I would usually eat it through the tracker and it came out somewhere in the neighborhood of 900 calories. And let me just say that this salad didn't even have…
  • LOL! Good one! Lose and Loose is an annoyance. On a diet website it becomes a constant annoyance. I know I have some annoying grammatical habits, but since they don't annoy me, I couldn't begin to tell you what they are.
