  • Not DE Coastal - DE Marathon in wilmington. It was scheduled for the week after DE Coastal in april 2021 and rescheduled (but ultimately canceled) for June 2021. Now deferred for 2022 - date TBD
  • Thanks! In the past i haven't cut back, but was wondering if i was missing some benefit. My weekly mileage is around 40 mpw - almost always 38-42 mpw. It sounds like neither of you purposely shorten your runs at the beginning of a plan - just replace a couple of easy runs with substance runs (speed, tempo, etc). I started…
  • Thanks! I signed up for it and then it was postponed and then canceled. Hopefully I will run it in person in 2023
  • Thanks spiriteagle!
  • I am debating a similar situation. I haven't registered, but I am on the fence. I am looking at DE Marathon (not coastal - this one is 4/25). I am wfh and have more time for training and would like to do another marathon and achieve my goal of sub-4. I also don't know for how many more seasons I will be able to follow the…
  • My last spring race was postponed to the fall. I will keep my distance up, but run easy. That way, I will be prepared in case an early summer race works out.
  • Thank you Steve and Djproulx! Although I agree that biking and swimming would benefit my training, I find it difficult to exchange too many of my running workouts. Probably part mental/breaking out of my comfort zone, part the weather (can't ride outdoors for the most part), ... I decided to focus on a 10 mile run as my…
  • Pondee - do you live in southern NJ? If so, are you a member of RUN856 (fb group)? There are alot of group runs posted in different areas - variety of paces too. A friend told me that if I wanted to run fast, run by myself. If I want to run far, run with friends. This advice has worked. Much easier to add the distance and…
  • Thank you! Yes - the HM would be my "A" race. I know my abilities and my goal for the Oly tri is to do it - get through the swim and keep my pace for the bike and run similar to my "usual" pace. For the next few months, I added the swims to the 2 days/week I work from home. I will try to add another after the HM. For the…
  • I would like to participate in an Olympic tri. Which means that one of my goals is to become a better swimmer and to become more comfortable in OWS. Unless I can find a pool oly. :) I have been doing 1-3 sprint tris the past few years and the swim has always intimidated me, but I know I can do it.
  • I have only run 3 marathons and did not achieve the PR I was aiming for, so take my "knowledge" with a grain of salt. I have followed 3 different training programs - and nailed most or all of the paces in each. For me, I think the most successful - the one I used and I felt the most prepared - put more of an emphasis on…
  • Thanks! After training for a race I usually want a mental break from following a rigid running schedule and think it is good for my body to take a break from the miles and speedwork. But I don't want to lose so much fitness that starting up again is hard. And mentally it is hard to cut back alot. It seems like your between…
  • I usually run very early in the morning (start before 5, end before 6 - it is dark for some or all of my runs) and almost always run on the sidewalks mostly because of safety. It is difficult for me to see cracks, uneven sidewalks, tree branches and roots and leaves, and other debris. I have only fallen 3 times the past 5+…
  • I did not. I have a bunch of ideas, but could have been a combination of all of them. or none of them. I checked my watch this morning and my mile paces were at/slightly faster for the first 17+ miles. The 18th mile was a bit slower overall and my heart rate went from low 160s to 186. This morning was the first day that I…
  • 2 weeks before the marathon I ran an aggressive 5 miles - speedy and hills. My legs were sore the next day so I skipped the week before race. I decided to do an 8 mile easy run with pickups at the end. (the plan run) I ran the marathon yesterday and it didnt go well. I stayed with the pacer for the first 16-17 miles and…
  • DE Coastal marathon. Finally here!
  • I finished the training and just signed up for the DE Coastal Marathon. Although I have run 2 before, the last couple of times I started training, life got in the way when the long runs became really long. This time around I managed to fit in 3 18 milers and 2 20 milers. Hoping to break 4 hours this time! (3rd marathon…
  • Thanks for your suggestions! Now that the hard physical training is done for me, the taper is mentally tough. I am analyzing the race bc I want to reach my goal. dsg2000 - 2 previous marathons, almost identical finish time. First one, there were strong winds and heavy rain for parts. Second one, I got a stomach cramp…
  • I had 3 18 mile runs and 2 20 mile runs. My nutrition practices were a semi-fail. Typically, i dont eat or drink anything unless the run is 16+ miles. For my 2 prior marathon trainings - last one 2 years ago - I started gu at mile 5 and then every 5 miles. Never an issue. My first 18 mile run this time around was with a…
  • One of my favorite track workouts is 1 mile WU, and then: 200m fast-200m active recovery, 400 fastm-400m active recovery, 600 fastm-400m active recovery, 800 fastm-400m active recovery, 600 fastm-400m active recovery, 400 fastm-400m active recovery, 200 fastm-200m active recovery, 1 mile cool down.
  • Thanks midwesterner85 and MobyCarp! midwesterner85 - good luck! Your race schedule is beyond my reach right now. I always recover quickly from my runs, so I think you are right - a moderate pace is safe. I was concerned about the mental aspect - holding myself back for a distance that I can comfortably run. MobyCarp - I…
  • 5 days. When I am training, I am more prescriptive with my running. When I am not, I go with the flow. My training schedule looks something like this: Sunday: off Monday: easy + core (15 minutes) Tuesday: speed work Wednesday: XT + core (bike/swim) Thursday: moderate or tempo or hills Friday/Saturday: long run and easy run…
  • I am following Jenny Hadfield's advanced marathon training. It includes 2 20 mile runs and a 22 mile run. If all works out (still waiting to get dates for family events), this will be my 3rd marathon in mid-April. I am on week 10 of the plan. I have been running for several years; half-marathon or more focused for 7 years.…
  • Thanks everyone. For my first marathon, the number was a bit random and I wasn't upset that I didn't hit the goal time. I knew I could run a half in 1:55 and I doubled it, added 10 and used that as my goal time for the full. Mostly, I chose a goal time to help me find my paces for "easy", "tempo", etc. runs the plan called…
  • Hi all. I'm Shannon and from NJ. I am a runner who first became interested in tri's to make me a better runner - specifically, avoid injury, etc. I've done 3 Sprint Tri's and surprised myself by really enjoying the training and experience. I would love to do an Olympic next year - I need to get out of my head when it comes…
  • I got a PR for the AC half last Sunday - 1:51:07. I don't know what my prior PR was, but this was at least 5 minutes faster. It was/is my only fall race so I am really happy. My only complaint was the strong smell of hot dogs miles 7-9.
  • southern New Jersey - about 20 minutes from Philadelphia
  • For the most part I have been running for the joy of it and not training. I participated in 2 sprint triathlons, ran in 4-mile and a 5-mile races, and participated on a team pushing a running chair in a half-marathon earlier this year. I have just signed up for my one (and possibly only) race this fall - AC Half-Marathon.…
