At 41 years of age I ran my first 5km in a time of 25:42. I have to admit that since completing that goal I have been pretty infrequent in my running and my times now would probably be more in the 27-29 bracket.

hate heights so neither really appeals .... abseiling sounds safer though Would you rather eat a chocolate that tastes like dog-s#!t or dog-s#!t that tastes like chocolate

Simply climbing stairs can put between 3 and 8 times your body weight directly to your knees .... running up stairs more. Knees are designed to bear a fair bit of weight. As others have said correct form is the key - done correctly squats will actually strengthen the knees. BUt make sure you dont overdo it too early,…

The effort required to lift your arms clear of the water tires you out over a longer distance particularly in open water. Breast or sidestroke are the better strokes for endurance. Front Crawl is a faster stroke better used in competitive swimming. As an aside freestyle was actually the name of the competitive swimming…

Trying so hard to get chocolate off my menu again ......but broke down and had a cadbury bar after lunch. Stress eating is making things difficult for me at the moment..... and one of the things that is stressing me is my bad diet ...... vicious circle. Still everything that goes in the cakehole gets logged ....big or…

This is my 2012 graph. I hit goal in September and then started a bit of a bulk with heavy lifing and eating at surplus ..... now I am happy with my shape (mostly) and maintaining so havent graphed this year.

My guess .... without seeing your diary ... is that the food you ate over the weekend was high in sodium and you drank almost no water. For weight gains like that it is usually the fault of water retention and will quickly shift again if you return to a diet within normal sodium ranges and drink plenty of water.

I love running in the heat .... and I am seriously missing it here at the moment. I find that hydration is the key. Pre-load and if you are doing more than 5kms or are an excessive sweater take some with you for mid run top-up. Avoid the hottest part of the day and run early (or late) to avoid the direct sunshine. I used…

What kind of hurt and where? In a lot of new runners there is a good chance that your running form is causing pain. But it may also be that you are just overtraining the muscles. Burning in the shins or pain in or around the knees or hips should be taken as a warning sign of injury (and possible form problem) muscular…

I find 50s 60s rock and roll is often good, and jazz (i know this isnt everyone's cup of tea). Tonight for example my best km was while Frank Sinatra sang Mack the Knife. I also like to mix it up. Currently my runs are about 45-60 minutes so I make sure my playlist is around 3hrs worth and run it on a random shuffle.

I find that the speed of a song is sometimes a demotivator. The best tracks are ones with a good cadence.

I always eat when I am hungry .... before bed .... in bed .... whenever. Never stopped me from losing. That being said different things work differently for different people .

Aussie whovian here .... and an older one ... Tom Baker is the only true Dr (just as Sean Connery is the only true Bond) but I have to admit that I do like the Matt Smith one as well As for companions ..... As has been said previously it is a safety thing not a weight discrimination. In the smaller planes that do these inter island hops the weight of passengers and cargo (as well as the distribution of weight) is essential to safe operation. It may even be economics that is forcing this change - heavier cargo and passengers…

Outside for me .... all year round. Last two months I have been a mess of sweat almost as soon as I have started with temperatures in the high 30Cs and through winter last year I was running in 0-2C temps .... often in the dark. I think that as long as you have somewhere safe to run (no ice on paths and no "scary" folk)…

Pretty damn good - I am running three days, at the gym three and walking or riding the seventh. 15 months ago I could barely walk to the end of the road,
