I can't second this enough!! I just spent 90 minutes getting fitted for a new pair of running shoes last Saturday. I tried on at least 10 pair, got on the treadmill with several of them, had a video of my gait done so we could review it, and then tried several different inserts until i found the right ones. Proper shoes…

I don't believe in cutting out carbs, but rather making smart choices with them. Whole grains (oatmeal and quinoa are staples in my diet--I have 4-6 servings combined per week), Greek yogurt, and plenty of fresh vegetables. Limit or better yet cut out fruit, fried foods, added sugars, processed grains, etc. My diet is…

I read through this thread and have to say I'm very surprised at the responses. i'm an outdoor runner. I can't stand the treadmill. I won't use it unless it's pouring--like it was this morning. It's hot and boring. I don't find it any softer than pavement. My best advice is to do half your run inside and half your run…

When I need to. If I go out with friends and want a glass of wine, I have one. One. I was at a banquet a few weeks ago and the pre-plated dessert was this chocolate lava cake type thing. I had a bite. One. I was volunteering at a charity event last week and someone offered me some buttered popcorn. I took a small handful.…

I think it's too much fruit. Substitute the morning fruits with some eggs whites with veggies. Same calories but a lot less sugar. Remember, tomatoes are fruits.

I eat clean, 1000 calories a day until I reach my goal, then I'll up it to 1300 or so. I also work out 2-3 hours a day. I don't count my workout calories against my food--that is just extra fat being burned and muscle being created right now, I will start adding calories to compensate once I hit my weight loss goal. I've…

Start out by power walking. Get your pace to about a 12 minute mile, and then start to add in two minutes of run and then slow back down to power walk every mile. To be honest, a 5K is only three miles, very doable to train for even with only a couple of months.

Why not just make it yourself at home? Get some egg forms and make three or four scrambled egg patties and stick them into the fridge. Each morning put one onto an organic whole wheat muffin, and nuke the whole thing for 35 seconds or so. If you use egg whites instead they are only 180 calories for the English Muffin with…

THIS! I am at 1000 calories a day and am losing weigh and gaining muscle. I am not starving. Even when I'm at my ideal weight (which is 122-124) anything more than about 1400 calories a day and I begin to gain. (I am similar in age/height/health to you. If I am hungry (and not just wanting to eat from boredom of cravings…

Two cups of black tea with a bit of fat free milk in the morning and water after that. Two or three times a month I'll have a glass of red wine.

Are you weighing/measuring everything you eat? I think most people have no idea what constitutes the portion they think they are eating. If you don't already have one, invest in a digital kitchen scale and use that plus your measuring cups/spoons religiously. I would also look at what you are eating. Get rid of processed…

Tough love isn't going to motivate someone to lose weight or get in shape. That motivation can only come from within. Until someone has internal motivation, you can yell, scream, and berate all you want, and it will fall on deaf ears. It's better to simply tell someone that when they are ready to change, you'll be there to…

I wake up at 5:00 am. Walk the dogs then feed them. Do 35-40 minutes of core yoga. Walk dogs again. Go out for a five miles power walk. Come back and walk the dogs again as a cool down. Shower and walk 50' to my office. (I work from home) I'm usually at my desk by 8:00 am give or take.

Bring your own mat. Sometimes they have a couple to lend, but not always. I don't like to use other people's mats, it seems kind of gross. I prefer wearing a sports bra and compression shorts with a loose tank over it. If it's really cold I'll wear yoga pants, but within three minutes of starting the workout you'll wish it…

The weight loss isn't helping the back problems, but you knew that. Ask your doctor for a referral to a physical therapist who can work with you to develop an exercise routine suitable for your situation. This isn't something to figure out on your own. Low impact pilates with bands/ball/blocks will most likely be the best…

I agree with the others--if you are sick, stay home. That said, you can still do some exercise. Even simple stretching type exercises will help keep your metabolism going and keep you limber.

I have a number of friends (and a husband) who are marathoners. They tone but don't do anything to add bulk--the more weight you need to move (even if it's muscle) the harder it is to run longer distances.

Running/Power Walking at a 12mph pace (or faster) for five miles and 30 minutes of power yoga will take about 90 minutes and burn right around 800 calories. I do both every morning (I don't take rest days, on weekends I increase my distance to 10 miles)--great way to start the day. The yoga will tone your arms and abs, and…

As long as the Cajun Chicken is baked or grilled, that's your best bet. The spices will add almost no calories and no fat. As them to substitute vegetables for the potato and have the salad dressing on the side. Skip appetizers, dessert, and if they bring bread and butter to the table, ask your friends to keep it at the…

Instead of toast have 1/4 cup (uncooked) of oatmeal with cinnamon. Instead of rice or potatoes have Quinoa. If you are having a major sweet carb carb craving, have 1/4 cup of Cheerios (or similar) nibbled on one or two at a time or a small apple sliced with a little cinnamon sprinkled on the slices. The less carbs you eat,…

Good idea. I can bring along some low fat balsamic and olive oil dressing to use. We are traveling for two weeks. The cooler I'm bringing wouldn't be large enough to hold that many meals, and there would be no way to heat them. I'll be having oatmeal for breakfast most mornings at our hotels.

Knock yourself out--I get all of those nutrients from other sources that are more appealing and are lower in carbs.

Not a tuna fan, but I had forgotten about the salmon--that's a great idea--thanks! I would probably just eat it "naked." I like the idea of hummus--I could eat that with carrots. :)

I can't eat peanut butter or nuts, I have peanut and nut allergies as mentioned in my first post. I don't eat jelly--I might as well scoop high fructose corn syrup into my mouth. On the rare occasion when I have an English Muffin, I put honey on it. I gained weight due to a medical issue that required surgery and caused me…

I seldom am hungry for more than that if I'm not working out. I had to force myself to make it to 900 calories yesterday (dealing with a minor foot injury so unable to run for four days--running is where I burn real calories and then want/need to eat), and I refuse to eat just to up my calorie count. When my body tells me…

Thanks--this was kind of the thought I had. I can bring hard boiled eggs from home and buy a bag of the Eggland's Best when we're in California before we start the trip home. Veggies in a bag are a great idea I hadn't thought of--carrots, broccoli, num! Those Wendy's salads are really not so good for you--holy moley--lots…

green/red/yellow peppers. They crunch, taste good, and an entire pepper is only about 50 calories! Zero fat.

Substitute black tea (no sugar but a bit of fat free milk is OK) and you'll get the caffeine with antioxidants! Taper down the soda until you drink NONE. Not one a week, but NONE. It's like an alcoholic having a drink. You can't say just one. It's none or don't bother until you get to the point that you just don't like it…

Here's my take on it. You'll most likely be fed a meal after you are in the air, then you should sleep. You'll wake up about an hour before landing and they will offer a light breakfast. Why do you need snacks? Do you wake up at home in the middle of the night to eat? If you feel like you need to bring something, I'd bring…
