  • Walking is great. I lost 15 pounds just walking to work every day (about 6 miles round trip) instead of driving or taking the bus. it was pretty cool because it was just par tot my day. I also got home relaxed and in a good mood. I keep a change of clothes, towel and doederant at work in case I have a meeting first thing.
  • I think the main advantage to a gym is people feel guilty for paying for it and not using it. I've worked out at the gym on campus (I get a cheap membership working there) and at home and I think it all depends on what you like and which will get you working out more regularly.
  • There are more options than oatmeal (although steel cut oats with yogurt an almonds is pretty great) such as mulitgrain hot cereal, cream of wheat and such. I have a cool title rice cooker so I sometimes cook up Japanese sweet rice and put a few nuts and some dried fruit in it.
  • On a day when I do my martial arts (burns about 700 calories)... 2 cups broccoli slaw A can of no salt or half salt tuna Small avocado 1/4 cup of pomegranate seeds 2 tbs Italian dressing It's about 550 calories, 41 grams of protein, half your days fiber, 460mg sodium, 750mg potassium and full days vitamin C and A. I like…
  • I can't recall if I did this already but I'm over 50 and on a mission to get back to my college weight of 165.
  • Most days between 6-7:30 after I fix my sons's dinner and while he is doing his homework. I'm just outside on the back patio so I'm there if he needs homework help. He knows to come signal me because I usually have music going and headphones on. About twice a week during the day at the gym on campus so I get some time on…
  • Once a week on Sundays
  • Dear 16 year old me... Be less angry, be fearless and stop thinking about tomorrow and live for today.
  • I work on a college campus and when I go to the gym it's pretty hard to be that gray haired dude (I'm 51) surrounded by ripped college guys (and girls). That stopped when I got on the much hated and feared machine they use to train your legs for snowboarding, cranked it up to the highest setting and did 10 minutes on it…
  • I walk my eight year old to school in the morning (about a mile and a half) and then have another mile and a half up a steep hill to get to my work. Then the reverse at the end of the day. Does us both good and saves on gas. I also jump rope while he's doing his homework...12 minutes at a fast pace jumping rope burns…
  • Is it any more expensive than a gym? I pay more for gym membership than I do for my martial arts classes. I've been at it now for almost 20 years and you just have to find the right teacher. There are big schools then there are just small groups or individual teachers that have much to teach and will do it for very little…
  • You're NOT a failure at all. With all that you have had to deal with, for you to keep going and gotten this far means that your are a hero in my book. I would have probably packed it in a long time back. KEEP AT IT, WE HAVE YOUR BACK!!!
  • That's correct..on one hand I'm happy to still be among the living but the older I get I am realizing that things like making sure your BP, cholesterol, stress levels and such are also where they need to be is also important. It would not be fun to survive cancer and drop dead of a heart attack. I think turning 50 really…
  • There will be setbacks...its the nature of the beast. You've lost some weight good. You've gained some back...not the end of the world. It's okay to stumble. We all do it when learning to walk. Just get back up and start again and remember what's past is past and cannot be undone and the future has yet to happen. All you…
  • Thanks and congrats on the 54lb loss.
  • Sign me up.
  • I don't lift and I've seen muscle replace fat. My pant size has gone down and even I can see in the mirror that I am losing inches but my weight is actually up a few pounds. My GP put it to me this way. A pound of fat is roughly the size of a brick and a pound of muscle is roughly the size of a bar of soap. Clearly some…
