Heart Rate Monitor is the way to go. I have a New Balance one that I got at Target for 60 bucks. Its great and reasonable compared to ones at sporting goods stores and online that go from 100 and up.

I just bought one too. I love mine for the same reason as you. It is really great to see how many calories you burn, and to get an idea about how intense your workout is. I have a spin instructor who will tell us % wise where we should be on our climb, its a great way to make sure I am getting the max benefit out of class!

My favorite is to make my 'glorified' mashed potatoes. I make regular mashed potatoes. Then I grate up carrot and put it in a small bowl, add a little water and cover with saran wrap. Stick it in the microwave for just a little bit. The carrot steams in the bowl. Then mix in with your mashed potatos, add a little butter…
