  • How much are you dedicated toward your goal? Will you feel guilty later if you 'cheat' and don't make your next goal when you wanted? I'd skip the twizzlers and drink water.
  • Work the tougher workout in slowly. Try it one day, and if you're very sore, go back to your regular routine for a couple of days, then do the new one again. It's good to mix up routines for a couple of reasons- 1) boredom 2)each workout targets a different set of muscles. A little bit of soreness is good- but you don't…
  • Likely, it's that you're not taking in enough calories. I recently plateaued and went through the same thing. After increasing your metabolism with working out, your body needs more calories to keep up the pace. Add up to a couple hundred more calories (preferably fruits/veggies with some carbs) an hour or so before…
  • That amount is over twice the recommended speed to lose weight. That being said it is possible- but not through dieting alone- no way, no how. You are going to have to exercise your butt off (literally and figuratively). I'm losing about 3lbs /week and pushing it pretty hard with the exercise. Food-wise, you can't…
  • From the Mayo Clinic website This compensation is generally referred to as 'starvation mode'. The term 'starvation' or 'starvation mode' gets thrown around a lot. Depending on the source- this can mean anywhere from 5 (daytime) hours without food to days without food to weeks with very little food. You have to use a little…
  • Haha! Holy crap! I was reading over my post, and saw I list a 32 year old son! Not! He's 23. Wow. I was NOT a 15 year old dad! Thanks for the welcomes!
  • I would be, but the wife and I are already in a 'Biggest Winner' contest where we do our Cage Fitness work out (Star Martial Arts).
  • Too many people are only reading a few posts, and not the whole discussion. The discussion is not about whether or not you enter coffee as water on MFP log....It is also NOT about whether 8 glasses of water is actually needed..... it's about whether coffee, soda, etc counts towards daily recommended water intake.
  • Yes, beer and wine would count, too. Before anyone wants to jump me for that- YES- beer and wine contain alcohol which affects the way your body processes that water. The fact remains that beer and wine contains water, and you could survive if you drank only beer or wine (it's not healthy- but that's another topic).
  • Consider this: You drink pure water while eating caramels. Once it's in your stomach- your body doesn't know whether you drank water+caramels or if you drank flat soda (soda=coloring, flavoring, sugar, water)!!! So why WOULDN'T a soda be considered 'water' - at least in terms of daily water intake? Same goes for coffee,…
  • Have you dropped your caloric intake levels since you started? If you've lost 30+ lbs, you shouldn't need as many calories to maintain that level. I went from 215 pounds to 200, and my goal level dropped 70 calories a day. My guess is your 1700 is based on your old weight. Go to GOALS/CHANGE GOALS/GUIDED, and UPDATE…
  • I try to make sure I get my 1300 (my recommended), or close to it. If I exercise, and am still feeling hungry, I'll eat a few more- but that hasn't been often. I'm looking at a loss of 15lbs in 4 weeks, without suffering.
  • I was a caffeine junkie not too long ago (4 weeks). I still have a lo-carb Monster Energy every morning, but am starting to consider giving that up. Recently, I would drink 3-4 caffeinated drinks in addition to my morning Monster. (not a coffee drinker) Since I started working out 5-6 days/week, and eating better- I've got…
  • In addition to all the above ideas, how about getting in a little better cardio shape BEFORE starting this? Ride your bike after work for a while until you can ride that distance without being winded. Then, when you do start- leave with enough time so that you don't have to huff it to get to work. You burn nearly as much…
  • For those who don't mind weighing and measuring EVERYTHING- great! More power to you! However- I'm gonna throw in my 2 cents- If you're not either totally committed (long term), or you're not obsessive-compulsive (no offense to anyone), I personally don't believe in going to the extreme of carefully measuring everything.…
  • I could use a little info please: I am just getting back on track, after a couple of years of being fairly sedentary. I've been doing Cage Fitness, and days that I miss class, doing P90. Saturday I had enough energy to do BOTH! (yeaah!). I know I'm going to get bored with the P90 in just a couple of weeks. How does the…

  • It's simply a defensive response- it's not abnormal, but then- it's not productive either. It's difficult- but try not to be offended, even if the person IS doing it in a negative way. Take what you can from the (one-sided?) conversation- so you can learn from it. The two most important things are: 1) ADMIT your…
  • If you're not eating 1200 calories, it's likely that your body is slowing itself down to compensate for the lack of metabolic material to use... most people would complain of lack of energy, motivation- maybe even strength. Are you? An example is "Tiffany" will for a few days not eat much, being so busy, tired-etc. Well,…
  • I would define 'cheating' as anything you put in your mouth without regard for your health and/or caloric intake. If you don't at least occasionally eat some foods you ENJOY (guilt free)- it's much harder to stay on track. If eating that cupcake puts you over, but going over isn't something you do every day- I see no…
  • You should always take in at least 1200 calories for women, 1800 for men (consider this your minimum gross intake). These numbers give you a general idea of what is needed for vital metabolic needs (think vitamins, etc). Your NET calories may be decreased with exercise. As a general guideline, you need to figure your…
  • A decent analogy: BMI is to measuring fat as a QB rating is to measuring how good a quarterback is. They are just numbers based on averages. Both sets of numbers can be easily skewed if the numbers it is based on are at either the high or low end of the scale. For example- A quarterback who only throws 2 passes, but one…
