  • Hard to say based on a single study, however, there is mounting evidence on the benefits of fasting...see the TedX talk by Dr. Mark Mattson on fasting. He is a professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins and the lead at the National Institutes on Aging's laboratory that focuses on neurodegenerative diseases (e.g.,…
  • I have IBS and my no fail solution for constipation - Bowl of oatmeal (1 minute oats - the type with no added sugar) and 1/2 to 1 cup mixed frozen berries on top (nuke them in the microwave). The combo of the fiber from the oats and the fiber and natural sugars in the berries is like a freight train through your bowels. :)…
  • Sara - You might have to stop the cheat days. I know that some weight loss experts and nutritionists advise against them because is a single day you can eat back most of your calorie deficit for the week. Perhaps instead you could allow yourself one "cheat meal" per week and log it to have a better sense of what your true…
  • I would love to be added. I just finished Day 2 of Level 2. I have only lost 3 lbs so far but feel like I am seeing more definition in my arms. Also, might have lost more but went off the wagon for the 4th.
  • 5'9" and 144lbs (up 7 (!!!) from last year). Pants are size 27/28 Tops medium but am broad shoulder and big chested so sometimes size up and take in around waist.
  • Amazing transformation! I did 1.5 rounds of P90x last year before being sidelined with multiple repetitive stress injuries. Loved the results from P90x but agree that the cardio was lacking. Will have to check out the body beast program - I do best with a structured program. Keep up the great work!
  • I need to lose 5-8 that I managed to put on since last August. Count me in for mid-June.
  • SW 142 CW 142 GW 139 *Feb Ultimate goal weight is to get back down to 136-137. Fitness goal is to maintain a healthy weight without any exercise related injuries. Sidelined myself w/P90x injuries last fall then lost all motivation and fell off wagon.
  • Mine have been trips or significant events - neighborhood pool opening, vacations, holiday parties, etc. Periodically, if I wear out or shrink out of my workout wear I will get a cute new workout outfit. Even though I workout in my dim basement by myself - it still makes me happy to do it in something cute.
  • Don't give up! Everything you are doing is good for you, even if you are not seeing the results that you want yet. I agree with the prior posters about the sodium. You can add sodium to your diary as one of the items that you see which is helpful. FYI - it is in everything - even milk - so processed foods can really shoot…
  • My bad - you are both right! BF needs to be higher than the essential fat level to avoid amenorrhea and all the associated negative health impacts.
  • Essential body fat for women is variously listed as 10-12% (while men's is much lower at around 3%). This minimal level of fat is necessary to maintain reproductive function. From there, it really varies according to age and what is "ideal" from your personal aesthetic. As you get older the range for lean, healthy,…
  • At 5'9" I am the shortie in my family (sister is 6'1" and have uncles and cousins as tall as 6'11)! I love being tall-ish and wouldn't mind another inch. However, it is a bummer shoe shopping, as all the super cute platforms that the little girls can pull off leave me feeling like a tramp or tranny. I get no end of shiz…
  • I'm 5'9" and weigh 136. I have been as low as 132 as an adult and as high as 200+ when pregnant, but I look and feel my best in the 130s. I don't look sick or unhealthy.
  • MFP defaults are really low for protein. I aim for 1 gram per lb of lean body mass - or 109 grams per day. You can safely go up even higher which is really important if you want to maintain lean muscle mass while losing.
  • Thank you! I didn't expect anyone to see a difference. My goal really isn't weight as much as it is BF - trying to get down to 18-19 (at 20-21) so I have more definition.
  • I am a before and during. I just finished Day 30 and have been enjoying it, but think I need to layer some additional cardio on top (or quit drinking so much wine). I have only lost 1 lb - but am starting to see more definition in my arms and back. My bum isn't where I want it to be but think overall it looks smoother and…
  • I'm 5'9" and currently 136 and about 20-21% BF. At my highest weight (preggo) I was over 200lbs and outweighed my hubby who is a skinny 6'5" . Spent some time in the 150s and 140s which was too big for my small frame - no muscle definition, double chin and squishy waist/bum. I like muscle and am aiming for 19%BF with…
  • The scale cannot always be trusted. Make sure you take measurements and pics as well - sometimes those are more reliable indicators of progress.
  • I went through this last year and lopped off all my hair (it was below my bra strap). Everyone says "it looks amazing" and "you have a face that can pull off really short hair" BUT having short hair is way more effort to style and more expensive to maintain (frequent cuts) than long and I feel like it makes me (and most…
  • With a deficit of 4200, unless your BMR or TDEE is calculated incorrectly, any weight gained is water weight. Patience, more water, less sodium and you should see a loss. Also, can't recall if you said you are weighing everything, but the difference between a rounded quarter cup and a weighed quarter cup can be significant…
  • Hi Ladies - I am 5'9 and 136. I have been on MFP and working my buns off and trying to eat pretty clean and high protein since February. Loss to date - 3 lbs. SLOWWWWWW...... :( Although my loss is painfully slow, I have managed to reduce my body fat a few percentage points (3% BF lost if measurements are to be believed)…
  • Weird how different this is for everyone. Even though I find this very challenging due to my lack of flexibility, my heart rate stays really low for this workout - I looked at one point and it was 44. Today I only burned 177 calories and was in my target heart rate zone for less than 1 minute. I actually think that I would…
  • Don't wait until the next time you see a doc. Untreated, celiac can lead to intestinal cancers and a host of other super scary stuff.
  • Neither - I think you look great! But since you asked, if you are small framed, then at 125 you are on the top end of the healthy range for someone with a small frame. If YOU are not comfortable with that, then I agree with the others, maybe another 5 lbs and some weights and cardio. Don't go overboard! You are going to…
  • Nice job Maria! You look amazing! Curious about your nutrition on the first and second rounds of p90x. Were you hitting the target calories and macros they suggest? I am finding the 50% protein recommendation unreachable.
  • When I do intervals on a treadmill, I warm up at a decent pace for three minutes then sprint for a minute followed by 2 minute recovery, I repeat this for 20 minutes total and am toast at the end. I have read elsewhere about doing shorter sprint intervals followed by shorter recovery periods which I think would work off a…
  • Wake up, coffee, bathroom, exercise, protein shake with milk & berries for breakfast. Bam!
