  • For a dude, I think you are not eating enough. I see lots of calories left on the table at the end of the day. Lots of opinions on your post. Also, I'm about to turn 50. Losing weight is not just about the scale for me. Celebrate the healthy changes you have made, as annoying advice as that may be, and see the…
  • Leftover fettuccini alfredo with grilled chicken and peas from dinner last night. It was wrong, so wrong. Most days I have a smoothie made with a frozen banana, sliced frozen peaches, a container of plain Greek yogurt, a tablespoon of almond butter and some kind of sweetener (like Splenda, for the haters).
  • Know thy triggers. I never have, nor likely will ever be able to, have containers of certain foods around me. If I buy a container of Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches, I will eat them all. At once. Sometimes you just have to stop poking the bear.
  • I love her!
  • It's hard when you are faced with free and available snacks. I binge too; in fact, I ate a box of Magnum double caramel ice cream bars this morning and it was my fault for shopping when I had not eaten since dinner last night. I am currently doing an online "course" in healthy eating through a website called DailyOM. One…
  • Cake is part of living. Who would want a world without cake, anyway. BUT: I try to choose the BEST cake and have some. At my current job, they have a tradition of giving candy to employees on Valentine's Day. The office manager was aware of my dietary changes and asked if I still wanted the candy. I said thank you but no,…
  • Meh, I don't do it at all. There's a lot of words here, but I believe what this guy writes: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/fat-loss/exercise-and-weightfat-loss-part-1.html. (Some people think he's a douche, but, you can be a douche and still be spot on.) I see a lot of big "calories burned" numbers around and am one of…
  • 30 carb grams a day? And only 1,800 calories, for a dude? Wow. Just an educated guess, but your body is fighting to hold on to what it has. On doctor's orders I do a modified South Beach plan that is not "low carb" but lower carb where I aim for about 125 to 150 grams of carbs each day. But it's not just about that. I look…
  • My doctor specifically recommended South Beach. It's good to read one of Arthur Agatston's books to understand the underlying principles behind the low (or, in my case, lower) carb way. I'm not ever going to be the kind of person who can cook cauliflower and pretend its mashed potatoes. So I focus on taking what I like and…
  • My struggle is less about food than my 'tude. The other day I was driving to work thinking, Wow, I've lost 43 pounds and when I get to a point when I've lost 100 pounds, I'll still be significantly overweight. Yay me." That's stinkin' thinkin'. So, you have to get your head right and, at least for me, it is a daily fight…

  • Change a lifetime of bad habits one day (sometimes, one moment) at a time. Recognize that change takes time (and patience), so try to treat yourself with kindness. Recognize that change will cause others to feel uncomfortable. I try to just focus on the day in front of me (vs the scale, or how many times I've failed, or…
  • Doreen Virtue has written several books on binge eating. Also, one of the best books I've ever read is called "Facing the Fire" by John Lee. It's a book about anger, not binge eating, but connecting the dots between anger and binge eating has been especially helpful for me.
  • Cannot emphasize the importance of quality sleep enough. "If your goal is to lose fat, skipping sleep is like poking sticks in your bicycle wheels," said study director Plamen Penev, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago. "Cutting back on sleep, a behavior that is ubiquitous in modern…
  • I think there is something to be said for a lower carb approach vs. low carb. I do what I'd call a modified South Beach diet. I keep my eye on the total carb number but I'm not fanatical. At first, I completely eliminated fruit, but then I asked myself if I was serious in thinking I could go the next 40 years without…
  • Pack a parachute. Some sort of safety net financially. Is there a reason why he can't move to where you are (or were going)?
  • This is ironic, because I watched "Fathead" over the weekend (you can watch it for free on Hulu), which leans heavily (pun intended) on Taubes' work and studies questioning the so-called lipid hypothesis. I thought the whole thing was funny and fascinating, especially the fact that the documentarian used lipid tests to try…
  • I've been doing a modified South Beach program since January and have lost about 36 pounds. This was based on a recommendation from my doctor. I use a lot of the Atkins protein bars to fill in some of the blanks calorie-wise and really love most of them. All of that said, here are a couple of approaches I've taken with…
  • To each his or her own, I suppose, but I'm one of these with "a lot of fat to lose," and I asked my doctor for guidance, not a documentary on Netflix, and I think it's safest for people looking to make real, lasting changes in their lives to first ask their doctor. Don't be surprised by major blow back when you float a fad…
  • If I'm going to eat potatoes, I try to also include protein and some healthy fat along side. Generally I think potatoes get a bum rap. In researching South Beach (I do a modified version) I found most of the carb-hostility aimed at rice, which I've eaten four or five times since late January. I would choose a sweet potato…
  • Eat more quality food. Increase good quality protein, decrease processed foods that add unnecessarily to the carb bottom line in your tracking. I see big numbers left on the table at the end of the day when MFP already builds in a calorie deficit. Just my first blush reaction.
  • The only thing that tastes like pie is pie. On the other hand, Atkins makes a chocolate caramel nut roll that is as close to a Baby Ruth as you can get.
  • Remember that morning you had the EKG.
  • I would add that anyone in the category of "very overweight" or "very unfit" needs to talk with their physician before embarking on any exercise program, much less running.

  • I'll just say this -- as someone with close to 200 pounds to lose, having adopted the MFP way since late January, I've noticed that the more I restrict calorie-wise, i.e., the farther away I am from achieving the overall calorie goal on any given day, the less I lose. What this tells me is that the more extreme I am, the…

  • There is such a thing as lap swimming etiquette. If someone gets into my lane, that person is making a silent pact with me to respect me, just as if I get into someone else's lane, I am making a pact to respect the swimmer who was there first. The last time someone violated the pact--she gave me a hard kick in the leg as…
  • There are a lot of math whizzes around. I'm not one of them, but, as someone with a lot to lose (when I started, about 200 pounds), I can relate to anyone who is looking for a quick solution. Some doctors are more aggressive than others when it comes to weight, I guess. My own doctor suggested I try South Beach. And, he…
